District approves replacement of Howard Wood locker rooms New field house will be ready for 2017 football season

By Isaiah Hall, Abby Freese and Mubarak Kadir urrent sophomores have something to look forward to after the school board approved the replacement of locker rooms and the field house at Howard Wood Field at a meeting Monday. In the past couple of years the grandstands, press box and track and field have gone through major renovations. Next up, the field house and lighting will be replaced. The contract for the project was awarded to Beck and Hofer Construction in the amount of $4,760,515. The project removes and replaces the current field house located on the northwest corner of the stadium. The project will consist of four new locker rooms, two shared rest rooms, showers, training rooms, maintenance and storage areas. Upgrades to the sanitary sewer system at the field will be included. The planned construction will begin June 1 after the state track meet and is to be completed in time for the fall 2017 football season—meaning Howard Wood will be without locker rooms next season. Senior football player senior Jenson Amdahl

Architect’s preview GET READY FOR A CHANGE—An artist rendering of what the new locker rooms/field house at Howard Wood will look like. said it’s time for an upgrade. “The locker room is really old, small, and can’t fulfill all the needs of the football team, their coaches and trainers,” Amdahl said. “The showers barely worked. So it was really time for a new facility. I’m sad I won’t be able to use the new one.” Football coach Chad Stadem said he agrees the improvements are needed. “The new update is long overdue, for space and the workability of it,” Stadem said. “I’m excited for the kids. It also might become the top facility of the region.”

Senior proud to call WHS home now, possibly in future My fellow Warriors, we are almost halfway done with the 2015-16 school year. This means I only have one semester left in the place that is like home to me—WHS. I would like to take this time to reflect on all of the great classes I have experienced at WHS. Freshman year English I with Stacy Kolbeck helped me realize high school wasn’t all that scary. The class made me feel a part of Washington, and its amazing traditions. Sophomore year was the year I thought the world was going to end when I got a B in Nick Bortnem’s geometry class. Looking back now, I laugh because I thought geometry was so hard. Little did I know how difficult math could be! Mr. Bortnem taught Hear me. . . me the importance of trying my very best, and when all else fails, know when Sydney Arrington to laugh. Junior year I was honored to have Jim Trett for three class periods a day—American Studies and government. Mr. Trett taught the class so much, while creating a fun atmosphere in the classroom. He is the reason I chose to major in High school social studies education in college next year, and for that I would like to thank him. I have had 29 different wonderful teachers so far in my years at WHS, and they have all impacted my life in one way or another. Thank you to all of the WHS teachers that work hard every day to help me and all the students be their best. I can’t express to you how much each and every one of you mean to me and the rest of the student body. Senior Sydney Arrington hopes to some day teach at WHS.

Amazon poised to take on UPS By Jay Greene The Seattle Times (TNS) SEATTLE — Within a few weeks, Amazon.com will begin competing directly with longtime partners UPS and FedEx. But not in the United States. At least, not yet. Sometime in the first quarter, Amazon is expected to acquire the 75 percent of the French package-delivery company Colis Prive that it doesn’t already own. Though the French company is small relative to the multinational giants that move Amazon parcels around the globe, the acquisition will be the biggest step yet that the online retail giant has taken to move into the business of delivering packages for others, as well as itself.

Technology Watch Some analysts believe that Amazon is putting together the pieces across the globe to launch a packagedelivery service that will one day compete with UPS, FedEx and others. In addition to the Colis Prive deal, Amazon acquired the right to purchase 4.2 percent of Yodel, a United Kingdom parcel-delivery company, in 2014. Last month, Amazon announced adding thousands of trucks to its U.S. fleet to handle the growing load of packages it is shipping. The Seattle Times also reported last month that Amazon is negotiating to lease 20 Boeing 767 cargo jets. Those jets would represent a significant expansion of an Amazon cargo trial in Wilmington, Ohio, operated by Air Transport Services Group on Amazon’s behalf. Amazon wants to build out its own U.S. cargo operations to avoid delays from carriers such as UPS and FedEx, which have, at times, struggled to keep up with the rapid growth of e-commerce.
