Looking Ahead Standing at the crossroads of 2017 and 2018 has me thinking about what this year ahead might bring. I’m not actually tempted to make New Year’s resolutions. In my experience those are made to be broken! Somehow it isn’t enough just to be accountable to myself in something. It’s too easy to change my mind or lose my resolve. What seems like a really good idea first thing in the morning when looking down at the scale takes on a whole new light when wine and cheese are served in the evening. It needs to come from a deeper place than that. Instead I find it more fruitful to look to those commitments and priorities that I have made in my life and seek to live them out more faithfully. Out of that deeper commitment comes the ability to live better, healthier, more effectively than before. It’s not just what I can do on my own but what I can do or how I can live when strengthened by Christ within that is a much more hopeful prospect. It is not just something I am doing for me but something I am doing for the Lord out of gratitude to him as a way of better carrying out his purposes in my life. The first Sunday of the year in 2018 is the celebration of the Baptism of Our Lord. It is a time when we will have the opportunity to recommit ourselves to living out our baptismal covenant. This seems timely to me as a way to start out the New Year. An adult is being baptized that Sunday who has chosen to commit his life to Christ. It will serve as a reminder to us of that daily commitment we make in living our lives for the Lord, taking up our cross and following him. It is a commitment to spend time in the Word, in prayer, in worship, and in service. It is a commitment to be so rooted in our relationship with the Lord, that others are able to see Christ in us, and to experience his love through us. It is a call to live sacrificially, seeking to be a blessing to others, because of the sacrifice the Lord has made on our behalf. (Continued on the next page)

nnual Meeting

Sunday, January 21st, 2018 Following the 11 o’clock Eucharist in The Great Hall During the Annual Meeting & Luncheon we will vote on the new Slate for Vestry presented by the Vestry Nominating Committee.

January 2018 (“Looking Ahead” cont.)

And yet the result is not a heavy burden but a joy. Psalm 37 calls us to “Take delight in the Lord…to commit our way to the Lord, to trust in him and he will act.” The Lord tells the people in the book of Nehemiah that “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” It is when we are delighting in the Lord and thus desiring to know him better and live our lives honoring him that it is not a burden but a privilege. Our accountability is not just to ourselves but to God and to one another. We share one another’s burdens in caring for each other and praying together. As each of us live into this covenant more fully ourselves, we are together more faithfully carrying out the work of the body of Christ in the Church. We are meant to encourage one another in this journey and to work together to more effectively carry the message of the gospel, in word and in deed, to the world. So as you look ahead to 2018, ask the Lord to show you, by speaking into your heart through his Holy Spirit, how you are being called to carry out your ministry in the Church and in the community. What new or continued service are you being called to? Be assured that he who calls you will accomplish it. (See 1 Thessalonians 5:24 and Hebrews 13:21) We are in such a wonderful community with so many gifts, such faithfulness, and hearts to serve, that looking ahead to 2018 is like looking ahead to a great adventure What a difference we can make together! 2018 is full of promise and hope because of the God we serve and the blessing of the people we serve with. So as we go into the new year, it isn’t with foreboding, but with joy, as a people with a future and a hope going into the fulfillment of the promises of God and the knowledge that nothing is too hard for him. The Rev. Cynthia C. Knapp, Rector

Everyday Spirituality

Israel after King Solomon’s Death

•What does it mean to live out our faith in our own homes?

We will discuss what happened to the Kingdom of Israel when Solomon died and why the kingdom split into the kingdoms of Judah and the kingdom of Israel. The Kingdom of Judah remained loyal to the House of David and the Kingdom of Israel fell into idolatry and sin. Many of the kings were very good and many of them were very bad and some of them were just lukewarm, serving God some of the times and ignoring God at other times. During the time of the separation, both kingdoms continued warring between each other until both kingdoms were sent into exile for their transgressions against God.

Sundays @ 10 am • Great Hall Led by Zac

•How can we move beyond wanting to live out our faith Monday through Saturday? •What resources are available to help us in this task?

Inquirer’s Class: Confirmation for Adults & Youth Sundays @ 10 am • The Parlor Led by Cynthia

We will be beginning an Adult Inquirers’ Class on Sundays beginning in February to prepare for the Bishop Wright’s visit to Christ Church for Confirmation (adults and youth) on Sunday, May 6th. If you are new to the Episcopal Church and/or would like to prepare to make a commitment to your faith through being Confirmed (or received if coming from another denomination where you have already been Confirmed), then this class is for you. Please call the church office or email Cynthia@ christchurchmacon.com if you would like to join this class to learn more.

Curate’s Corner As we enter a new year I am reminded of one of my favorite prayers. It comes to us via John Wesley and our Methodist brothers and sisters. I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will; put me to doing, put me to suffering; let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you, exalted for you, or brought low for you; let me be full, let me be empty, let me have all things, let me have nothing: I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God,Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. This “Covenant Prayer” was often prayed at New Year’s Eve service as a way of dedicating the new year to God and it was at such a service that I first discovered it. Perhaps it is one which you would like to use as well as we enter in 2018. Rev. Zachary D. Neubauer, Curate The Chimes

Candidates for Vestry

The Vestry Nominating Committee is very pleased to present the slate of four Vestry candidates: Kirk Domingos, Bubba Edge, Rebecca Grist and Trish Whitley. These parishioners have been selected by the Nominating Committee to be the 2018 Vestry Slate presented to the parish on January 21, 2018 at the Annual Meeting. At the Annual Meeting on January 21 we will approve the slate of candidates. These candidates represent the diversity of the parish which will meet the needs of our Vestry. All four candidates have prayerfully considered their commitment to serve.

Kirk Domingos

Rebecca Liles Grist

My name is Kirk Domingos. From birth, I attended Christ Church until I enrolled in college at Georgia Tech. Following graduation, I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and served on active duty for 4 years. I have been married to my wife Barbara for fifty years and we have two children and two grandchildren.

Rebecca Grist is a cradle Episcopalian who transferred membership to Christ Church in 1992. She served on the Vestry twice, once from 1995-1998 and again from 2008-2011. She served as Senior Warden, Junior Warden and Clerk. She served on the Rector Nominating Committee of 2002-2003. Rebecca is a lay reader and served on numerous committees for Christ Church over the years.

I joined C & S Banks of Georgia in Atlanta following my discharge. My entire professional career was in banking and most of it was spent in Louisiana. I retired from my position as a senior executive with Hibernia National Bank after 28 years in 2003.

Professionally, Rebecca serves as Bibb County SolicitorGeneral and has since 2013.

Although having moved a number of times, we were active Episcopalians in local parishes where we lived. I have served as a vestry person and as both a Senior and Junior Warden. In addition, I served on several diocesan committees. Wherever we lived, the Episcopal Church was an important part of our lives. We moved back to Macon after an absence of 50 plus years in 2013. Here at Christ Church I am a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, an usher and participate in the weekend lunch program. My goal for Christ Church is to continue on our journey of “Growing by God’s Grace into a Family of Faith and Ministry.”

My name is Laura Ann Harrell, and I am very excited to be working with the youth of Christ Church

I was accepted to three excellent medical programs during my senior year, but I am not a medical student. Why? Because the Holy Spirit called me towards a new field, and although it was a difficult decision, I denied my acceptances to those programs and chose to pursue music ministry with my worship band, Three17. After making that decision, God guided me to the Wesley Foundation of Macon where I became an associate pastor of campus ministry, and only a few months later, God directed me to Christ Church to be a part of the leadership for the Youth ministry program. I am excited to be working with the Christ Church youth and to be involved with them in programs in our diocese. The Chimes

I am currently in my senior year at Mercer, studying secondary English education and Spanish. Upon graduation, I will be working as a high school English teacher. I was born and raised on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, where I attended Christ Church, Frederica until I left home for college. My experiences as a student in EYC, and especially my missions experiences, helped me to learn firsthand what it means to be the “hands and feet of Christ,” and I am really enjoying this new journey as an EYC leader at Christ Church Macon!

January 2018 Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906-2001) and Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) were twentiethcentury black heroes who left far-reaching legacies with striking parallels. Both lived out their Christian faith in transformative social action, and both penned literary works that continue to hold up a powerful prophetic ideal: an ideal of global peace and cross-cultural brotherhood that remains a model for our troubled world long after their deaths. They both received singular honors during their lives: Senghor the first black writer to be admitted to the fabled French Academy and founding President of his native Senegal, King the Nobel Laureate and acknowledged worldwide champion of racial reconciliation. A final parallel between these two great men of the twentieth century is that both were targets of assassination attempts. Even ten years before his death, King was the victim of a near-fatal stabbing in 1958 at a book-signing. And in March of 1967, President Senghor was attacked by a man wielding a knife while he was observing an important Muslim religious festival at the Grand Mosque of Dakar. When Senghor heard the news of King’s assassination by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968, he was in the midst of his country’s national holiday, celebrating eight years of independence from France. His deep grief found an outlet in a poem in Dr. King’s honor titled “Elegy for Martin Luther King.” Under the title there is a parenthesis that reads “for jazz orchestra.” Michael Scott’s spoken word rendition in English of the climax of the elegy today will be accompanied by the world premiere of an original jazz composition by Dr. Christopher Schmitz of Mercer’s Townsend School of Music performed by the Mercer Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Monty Cole.

Happy New Year! Let’s keep three words in front of us this year, “Loving like Jesus.” Loving like Jesus… as I read and watch the news is as timely as ever. Jesus loves by telling stories that make us free. He loves by being humbly bold, by breaking bread with unusual dining partners, by putting his reputation on the line for outcasts. He loves by reminding us that God is lively, effective and trustworthy. My hope and prayer for the Diocese of Atlanta in 2018 is that we might be a half-step more courageous. A half-step more faithful. A half-step more loving as Jesus loved. God bless you!

Christ Church Choir

First Rehearsal & Dinner Wednesday, January 10 • 5:30 pm I would like to extend an invitation to all those interested in joining our adult choir to come and sing on Wednesday, January 10 at 5:30 pm. This will be a great time to experience a weeknight rehearsal before making a commitment for the rest of the choir season. We will rehearse about an hour then move into the Cloister Room for a Welcome and Appreciation Dinner. Thank you for all you do to enhance our worship at Christ Church. We are blessed with so many talented individuals and I am grateful for your continued support. I am looking forward to a wonderful new year. See you on the 10th!

Christ Church Choristers & Novice Choir Our children’s choirs are continuing to thrive and I am even more excited about what the near future holds. I will be contacting parents in the beginning weeks of January to find out what day and time will work best for our rehearsals. Ultimately I would like to accommodate as many choristers as possible, while allowing time for all the necessary lessons and music making (warm-ups, theory and aural skills, sightsinging, and anthems). One of the goals I have in mind for this year are for the Choristers and Novice choirs to have more of an active role in our Sunday morning Eucharists (9 and 11 am). Don’t worry, this does not mean every week. Another opportunity I would like to see take place is a variety-type show in the Great Hall sometime after Easter. This will include our children’s choirs as well as adult choir and any parishioner who wants to share their talents. This event will be on a Wednesday night and include dinner. Thank you to all of the parents who help make these two groups a possibility. Your time is valuable and I am thankful you’ve chosen to participate in our Music Ministry. The Chimes
