Show choirs have good showings in Iowa contest

ClaCo takes second runner-up at Mo Show By Ben VanBockern and Jacob Smith arrior show choir members had a good showing at the Mo Show competition Saturday at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as both show choirs placed. The Stage Lights JV show choir finished as fourth runner-up and the Classic Connection varsity show choir finished as second runner up. Director Jeff Spencer said he was pleased with how the choir stepped-it-up at the event. “Classic Connection was fourth in prelims,” Spencer said. “They then had a great performance in finals to move up to third.” Stage Lights earned a caption award for “Best Opener” in Tier Two and Classic Connection for “Best Ballad” in the evening finals. Junior Jayden Melillo said Classic Connection competed well at Cedar Rapids. “I thought we did really good because there was a lot of competition,” Melillo said. “We were pretty tired because of the overnight, but pushed through and put lots of energy in for finals.” The show choirs next compete in the Emmetsburg, Iowa, Extravaganza March 3.

By Logan Uttecht Warrior varsity girls basketball team members fell to the No. 2 rated Lincoln Patriots 69-54 Tuesday evening at WHS. Senior Jada Cunningham led all Warrior scorers with 11 points and six assists. Senior Taylor Vandervelde followed close behind with 10 points and six assists. Senior Aubrey Miedema, junior Samiya Jami and freshman Sydni Schetnan all had eights points.

Miedema also had eight rebounds to lead the team. Assistant coach Brad Kennett knows the Warriors can win. “We played really hard, which is always good,” Kennett said. “As a team, we need to work on getting to the line more and executing from the line.” The sophomores lost 56-42. The freshmen won 56-29 and the JV won 49-25. The teams will next play at Roosevelt Saturday.

You don’t have to be lonely this Valentine’s Day! Good morning, Warriors. Today is that one day of the year that is full of hearts, chocolate and lots of kisses. That’s right—it’s Valentine’s Day! Now I know that not everyone has that special someone to spend their quality time with, but that doesn’t mean that you need to spend it alone. There are lots of things that you can do that will satisfy your Valentine’s Day needs. You can kick Hear me. . . back and watch some Netflix, where there are a variety of movies and shows that Nathan Rietz you can watch to keep yourself entertained. I suggest watching the “Godfather” trilogy, if you have a couple hours on your hands. Even though love is more complicated that the maze

above, you don’t have to understand it to get through today. Another way to get through today is to spend it with the boys. Of course, Saturday’s are for the boys, but why can’t Valentine’s Day be for the boys, too? A hefty alternative to Netflix and the boys is homework. You can spend tonight catching up or getting ahead in some of your classes and just forget about the demands of love and Valentine’s Day. Another option to get through the day, is to just chill out and play some video games. Obviously, Fortnite is always an option. But Alvin Kamara won’t let you down in Madden, and Kobe will always be there for you in 2K. Or go old school and fire up a little Mario Kart. Whatever you decide to do with your Valentine’s Day, be it alone, with your friends or playing a video game, remember to enjoy and try to even love yourself this Valentine’s Day, Warriors. PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Shaun White threw the trick, the one that had sent him to the hospital five months ago, and told his coach he was scared. In practice for the Olympic final here at Phoenix Snow Park, the memories of that crash hadn’t faded any more than the still-pink scars on White’s forehead, nose and upper lip. JJ Thomas encouraged White, telling him he had executed the trick fine.

Olympic update

By the time his third run in the final came around, that took a backseat to the competitiveness that has made White snowboarding’s biggest icon. Needing to land a combination of tricks he’d never done before, White soared above the halfpipe and put down the run of his life. In the end, he was Olympic champion again. After silver medalist Ayumu Hirano landed back-to-back 1440s, White knew he had to overcome his fear. White did it for the first time, hitting a massive frontside double cork 1440 — which is two off-axis flips with four spins — before hitting a cab double cork 1440, the trick he had crashed on. The tricks are dangerous enough that he didn’t practice them in combination before the competition. It was enough to score a 97.75 for another gold, one that came 12 years after he won his first one, four years after a devastating showing in Sochi and five months after the crash made him reconsider if he wanted to continue in the sport.
