By Emily VanBockern arrior varsity boys basketball team members split a pair of city and Metro Conference games over the recent break, defeating the Rough Riders 55-50 Saturday at Roosevelt and falling to O’Gorman 63-57 Tuesday at WHS. Senior Isaac Goeman led the Warriors against the Knights, putting up 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior Logan Uttecht also had 13 points and four rebounds. Coach Craig Nelson said the game with O’Gorman was a good one, despite the loss. “We need to be more disciplined and solid all around to beat a great team like O’Gorman,” Nelson said. “Today we start a new season at 0-0, and we need to get better in practice.” Senior Jack Talley is staying positive. “It’s tough losing at home, but now that postseason play has started, we’re 0-0 again,” Talley said. “We can’t wait to play the first round of districts.” In sub-varsity action, the JV beat Roosevelt 59-54 and O’Gorman 64-55. The sophomores beat Roosevelt 70-52, but fell to O’Gorman 57-47. The freshmen won three of four. The varsity ends the regular season at an even 10-10, and as the No. 2 seed in District 2AA and will host No. 3 Lincoln on Tuesday in the WHS gym.

On Saturday, WHS lost at Roosevelt in overtime 50-48. Senior Kelsi Kearney led the team with 15 points and two steals. On Tuesday, WHS needed two overtimes to beat O’Gorman 72-70. with 19 points. Senior Emily VanBockern was pleased with the outcome. “We fought hard until the end,” VanBockern said. “It was a competitive game and we played well as a team.” Including those two games, WHS ends the regular season at 11-9 and as the No. 4 seed in District 2AA. As such, they will host a play-in game with No. 5 seed Yankton Friday at WHS. Coach Jamie Parish said his team is ready. “We are looking for extra

possessions in the upcoming games,” Parish said, “one more rebound, one more steal, one more loose ball, one more assist, one more free-throw. All of those little things over the course of a game will give us our best chance to be successful.” In sub-varsity action, the JV pounded Roosevelt 57-30 and fell to O’Gorman 45-39. The freshmen lost two to Roosevelt, 30-24 for the A Team and 23-16 for the B Team. They beat Roosevelt 39-23.

Winter sports will soon wrap-up for WHS athletes

Engineer, doctor team up for device

With the combined A and B State Wrestling Tournament this weekend at the Denny Sanford Premier Center and the conjoined State AA Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament just around the corner March 16-18 in Rapid City, this last few weeks of winter are marking the end for WHS’s winter sports season. For me, and for many of my peers, these few weeks will be the last time that we will play a sanctioned high school sport ever again. It seems like just yesterday I was sprinting around the gym of the YMCA like a Hear me. . . chicken with its head cut off, attempting to chuck up a basMaham Shah ketball into a hoop that seemed higher than a skyscraper. I regularly reminisce about my Patrick Henry days when my teammates and I battled through the awkward stages of puberty while also trying to impress the group of boys sitting in the top of the bleachers watching us play. It’s hard to imagine that my last day of playing sports is coming up soon. Although these sports have not been the smoothest roller coaster out there, I cherish the moments of being on the court with my friends and watching the crowds erupt in joy as the final buzzer sounds. I just have one piece of advice for all you underclassmen—take advantage of the few years you have left. Put yourself out there and try out for the sport you’ve been dying to play. Or, gather up the courage to audition for the lead part in the WHS play or that spot in the show choir or band. Whatever your forté, don’t miss out on the chance to make friends, skills and memories that will last a lifetime. Senior Maham Shah will probably cry in her last game in the WHS gym.

WARRIORS MAKE EXCELLENT

VIKINGS

Technology Watch After spending last year wading through the field of noninvasive neuron stimulation, they made a discovery in December that led them to change the entire course of their development. They had spent months planning a device to regulate appetite. The gadget would send an ultrasound signal to the nervous system that would mimic the sensation of fullness. It would be an inexpensive device that could be used by individuals at home. But when they tested the effect of their prototype on the vagus nerve, which connects to many organs, they found it reduced the level of glucose in the blood. As a result, the pair shifted from appetite regulation to the prospect of creating a noninvasive device for diabetes therapy and inflammation control. The focus of their research, the vagus nerve, allows unique access to the brain and can be the regulator of inflammatory diseases like sepsis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. At the moment, their aim is to get products approved by 2020.
