PARISH MISSION STATEMENT “The Community of St. Monica Catholic Church is a Multi-Cultural Parish who faithfully worships God and proclaims the Gospel.”

Sunday March 2, 2014 The Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you. Isaiah 49:15 May Tenderness Prevail One theme runs through all three readings today: tenderness. In the first reading, the Israelites fear that God has forsaken them—a temptation we sometimes experience even today. But Isaiah reminds them that God loves them as tenderly as a good mother loves her child. In the second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians that they must be “trustworthy” stewards “of the mysteries of God.” A trustworthy steward tends to his master’s goods with care and reverence, that is, tenderly. And in the gospel, Jesus describes God’s fatherly love for us his children—a tender love that should ease our anxieties and fears for the future. The American psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan defined healthy adult maturity as “a state in which tenderness prevails.” Today we might ask ourselves: Does tenderness prevail in me? Or have I allowed some negative qualities—such as haste, impatience, meanness, self-righteousness—to take over?

“Now it is of course required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.” 1 Corinthians 4:2 Trust is a key element of being a good steward. For a steward is not the owner, but one who has been entrusted with the care of the possessions of another. God is the owner of all and we are merely His stewards. Jesus has entrusted the continuation of his work on earth to us as his disciples. We must be trustworthy of this great commission.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS: March 5 is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Sunday's gospel reminds us "Why are you anxious about clothes? (Mt 6: 28) Lent offer us a time to let go of some of our possessions gracefully. It is a practice that can clear you mind and home and bring peace to your soul.

PARENTING POINTERS: With Lent just starting have you discussed with your child(ren) what special efforts everyone in the family might do to enter into Christ's sacrifice during these 40 days? Perhaps everyone could choose one personal sacrifice and the family can agree on one common sacrifice. Telling each other helps keep you accountable.
