The team is coached by computer teacher Mark Emry. The event was sponsored by the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at SDSU. At the event, the team created an enhanced version of the classic computer game “Minesweeper” in competition with 15 teams from South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. Each of the team members won a

$1,000 scholarship to SDSU. The students on the WHS team designed a software application over a 20 week period based on logical thinking, problem solving skills and high school math and science knowledge. The project was designed and implemented by team members at their home school and then presented to the judges, faculty members from SDSU. Emry said he was very proud of how his team performed. “From the end of the summer until the competition the team worked very hard,” Emry said. “Anyone can play the game—just ask Brendan, Adam or Collin.” All teams will be showcased in local and regional publications.

AP testing begins Monday with popular exams By Ashley Paulson Advanced Placement (AP) testing begins Monday across the U.S. and at WHS and continues through May 13. At WHS, all of the tests will be held in the auxiliary gym area and will begin with some of the most popular classes, including AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science Monday morning and AP

Psychology Monday afternoon. All students who will be testing need to remember that absolutely no electronic devices of any kind are allowed in the testing room. That means no smartwatches, cell phones, etc. AP coordinator Beck Kelly said she wants to remind students to be ready. “Students need to be ready for the next two weeks,” Kelly

said. “Relax, and do the best you can.” For morning tests, students need to be in the mini gym by 7:45 a.m. They will be done testing by noon and must be back in class for sixth period. For afternoon tests, students are dismissed from school at 11 a.m. and must report to the mini gym by noon and remain until 4 p.m.

It’s time to get ready for summer. The Big Sioux-do-ku Fill all the blank squares in the game with the correct numbers. Every row, column and 3x3 subsection of nine numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order.

Follow this easy plan for perfect summer beach body

LG phone goes to pieces …on purpose

Judging by the increasing lack of motivation among the students at WHS, (yes, this is directed at you, class of 2016) I can undoubtedly assume that the pre-summer season is upon us (why call it “Spring,” when we all know it only serves to get us pumped-up for summer). And, with warm, free thoughts of summer come the not-so-awesome reminders that it is almost that time of year where guys and girls alike begin to work toward that perfect “beach body.” So I invite you to join my “Summer Hear me. . . 2k16 Beach Body Plan.” My plan is quite a bit differHannah Smith ent than the traditional “exercise and eat salad” routine and has only three steps. Follow it, and in no time you’ll be ready to post that “#summer2k16” beach picture on Instagram. Step one is simple and pretty self-explanatory: have a body. This is arguably the most crucial step in this process. There is no specific diet or exercise routine necessary, because it doesn’t matter what kind of body you have. I mean, after all, who needs a six-pack when Dairy Queen Blizzards exist? Tan or pale, tall or short, whatever your body type, it works! Next, find a beach—Wall Lake or even a public pool will do. Step three is to wear what makes you feel comfortable—be confident in who you are. Surround yourself with people who remind you that you are a beautiful piece of artwork and remember that you deserve to have an awesome summer. Be confident in who you are and embrace your insecurities, because the perfect “beach body” is whatever you want it to be. Senior Hannah Smith is not-so-patiently awaiting summer vacation.

By Jim Rossman The Dallas Morning News (TNS) Let’s face it — LG makes fine smartphones, but they are not as popular as handsets from Apple or Samsung. When you’re chasing the leaders, you’re much more likely to make some bold decisions, and LG has created some buzz with its new flagship handset, the LG G5.

Technology Watch LG designed the G5 as a modular phone — the portion of the phone’s bezel below the screen snaps off and you can install different modules LG calls “Friends.” The G5 has a 5.3inch screen with a resolution of 2,560-by1,440 pixels, for a pixel density of 554 per inch. It’s running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gb of internal storage. A microSD card slot can provide up to 200 gb of additional storage. The G5 doesn’t look very different from other Android phones. There are no buttons on the front — the power/sleep button, with its incorporated fingerprint reader, is centered on the back, under the cameras. The button falls exactly where your index finger rests, which is nice. The G5 gets its charge and moves data using a USB-C port instead of the usual microUSB connection. Some say USB-C is the future, but for now, it just means you’ll have to bring your own charging cable instead of borrowing one from a friend when you need a charge.
