Samsung Electronics Wins Two 2015 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Awards From Bloomberg Business Wire

Samsung Electronics has won the 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the third year in a row. This distinguishes Samsung as the only consumer electronics company to have earned this prestigious ENERGY STAR award for its continued leadership in protecting the environment through activities focused on providing products with superior energy efficiency for the third year in a row. In addition, Samsung has also won the 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Climate Communications Award for the second straight year for its efforts in further educating consumers about the positive effect energy efficiency and energy-efficient behaviors has on climate change. “We are truly honored to have received two ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards for the second year in a row,” said Gregory Lee, president and CEO Of Samsung Electronics North America. “Samsung is very committed to sustainability and developing both innovative and energy-efficient products while pursuing various ways to help the community. We are also proud to work with ENERGY STAR to raise awareness about energy-efficient behaviors that help protect our environment and fight climate change.” Samsung was selected from 16,000 organizations in the U.S. participating in the ENERGY STAR program for the two honors. The company’s related accomplishments last year include: •• Product Innovation: Samsung offers 711 ENERGY STAR-qualified models across multiple product categories. Four Samsung products received the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technologies Award from the Consumer Electronics Association earlier this year. The number marks the most among all manufacturers. •• Consumer Promotion: Through its consumer promotions, Samsung highlighted the importance of the EPA’s “Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR” campaign. •• Corporate Citizenship: At Boys & Girls Clubs of America events throughout 2014, Samsung reached 150,000 youth across the United States and taught Club members and their families about the importance of saving energy and protecting the environment from climate change. Also this year, two new major Samsung facilities are opening - Samsung Semiconductor, Inc., a stateof-the art energy-efficient campus in San Jose, California, later this year and Samsung Research America’s new R&D center, built in accordance with LEED Gold and LEED Platinum certification standards in Mountain View, California, which opened earlier this year. “Through their sustained participation with ENERGY STAR, Samsung Electronics is helping Americans save money, save energy, and do their part to reduce our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “I applaud Samsung for earning EPA’s highest

Test the Tools You Test With by Jim Wiley, Regional Technical Trainer

If you and your family were planning a long summer vacation in your family car, there are probably several things that you’d do to make sure your car was at its best: You’d get a tune up, change the oil, check the condition of your tires and make sure they are properly inflated, etc. In short, you’d make sure your car was in tip-top condition before you hit the road to ensure your trip was safe and uneventful. Along the same lines, it’s a good idea to invest a little time in “tuning up” the tools that you depend on for accurate troubleshooting and diagnosis - so that you can be sure your tools are in tip-top condition before you face that next tricky TV or refrigerator repair. Below is a picture of two identical meters plugged into an outlet that is supplying 123 vac.

Looking at the meters, it’s obvious that the meter on the left is out of calibration. It also gave a false DC voltage reading when testing an 8.8 vdc battery (reporting 13.9 vdc), and It supplied equally incorrect information when testing thermistor sensors. Why? Old, worn out batteries. 3 Test the Tools You Test With

Test the Tools You Test With continued

The reason I am sharing this information is to remind you that the accurate diagnosis of an appliance or TV - and the decisions you make about whether to replace a part - can be radically affected by misinformation from you meter. If your meter is inaccurate because the batteries are run down, then, like under inflated tires or a dirty air filter on a car, it can cause you severe problems down the road. An easy way to remember when to change the batteries is to use the change to and from daylight savings time (or twice a year) as a reminder. At the same time you clean your clothes dryer venting and replace the batteries in you smoke alarms and CO2 meter, you should also take the time to change the batteries in your test tools. By doing this one simple thing, you can cut redo and make those trips where you return with a part that still doesn’t fix the real problem a thing of the past.

Working with Lowe’s Dispatch Tickets By Matthew Newton, Senior Manager, Field Service

65% of Samsung’s ASCs receive Samsung dispatches directly from Lowe's. If your ASC is one of the 65%, we thank you for agreeing to work closely with the #1 appliance retailer in the U.S. to support our mutual customers. As you know, working with a Lowe's ticket differs in a number of ways from working with a Samsung ticket. The intent of this article is to help you effectively manage both. Availability and Coverage. One of the primary criteria Lowe's uses to determine which ASC to use is schedule availability in Service Bench. Often, Lowe’s will choose the ASC that can provide the earliest appointment, but customers can and do select ASCs and appointments based on their own preferences. Along with schedule availability, Lowe's also looks to see who covers a particular area. Consequently, you should make sure that the availability you offer Lowe's, and the zips you cover, are always up to date in your Service Bench profile. Ticket Creation. Just as it is always a good idea to snap a picture of the serial tag for your records, so it is also a good idea to create a Samsung ticket by emailing [email protected] when you receive a Lowe's dispatch. It is, however, not required. If you receive dispatches for Samsung products directly from Lowe's through Service Bench, you can order parts, file warranty claims, and be paid for repairs without obtaining a Samsung ticket number. There are, though, two situations where it is very helpful to have a Samsung ticket. If you are communicating with Samsung Technical Support about a potentially unrepairable product or communicating with the Parts Department about a part that is on Back Order, then it is best if you have a Samsung ticket number. A Samsung ticket will allow you to communicate through GSPN and get the fastest response and most efficient record keeping. But those cases are the exception to the rule. You can still call Tech Support with only your account number and a serial number. However, note that to send pictures or process an unrepairable RA, you will need a Samsung ticket. Redo Tickets. Some of you may have run into issues with the Ticket Create team not creating tickets for REDO situations. We’re pleased to say that this has been corrected and we are once again creating tickets for the 2nd ASC if dispatched by Lowe's. If Lowe's assigns you a ticket for a unit that was previously repaired by someone else, you can and should run that call. Bill of Sale and Claim Filing. Here is the key: A Lowe’s Service Bench dispatch that includes the Date of Purchase and shows that Lowe's has the Date of Purchase “on file” in the Proof of Purchase field is a valid BOS! The dispatch itself is the customer receipt. Lowe's has near perfect visibility to when they sold a product to a customer. If they tell us directly (via the dispatch) when the warranty period started, then we accept that date. A screen shot of the Lowe's Service Bench dispatch is valid proof of purchase. Also, remember that for STOCK REPAIRS, if the unit is outside of Samsung’s SR policy (one repair within 18 months of life), you should submit the claim directly to Lowe's for payment – a rejected Samsung claim number is not required. Hopefully, you found this information useful. Samsung works closely with Lowe's to monitor and respond to Field issues. If you have questions or are experiencing difficulties, please reach out to your RSM so that we can help. 6 Working with Lowe’s Dispatch Tickets

Diagnosing the New 2015 Jog Function By Bob Sindt, Assistant Manager, Training

When the jog shuttle (also known as the jog function board) on a TV fails, it can cause a unit to stop responding to any remote control commands. To troubleshoot, follow the directions below and on the next page. Note: Several 2015 models, including the UN55JU7500FXZA, now utilize 1.8 Vdc instead of 3.3 Vdc as the initial reference voltage for Key 1 and Key 2 Jog Function commands. Previous years models use 3.3 Vdc. (See the next page.) To Test New 2015 Jog Shuttle Operation with 1.8 Vdc Initial Reference Voltage Use a digital multimeter to check DC voltages on the connector of the jog shuttle as described below: 1. Check Vcc, SDL, SCL, IR for 3.3 Vdc. 2. Check the LED Indicator for STBY operation. (Check for 1.7 VDC supply from the Main Board.) 3. Check the Jog Shuttle Switch Operation (Key 1 and Key 2) for each command change now beginning at the new 1.8 Vdc reference. Refer to the table below for approximate measured voltages at each pin.

Intermittent Loud Popping or Banging in Dual Evaporator Refrigerators By Wes Sirois, Assistant Manager, HA Product Support

Customer Complaint: •• The customer hears a loud banging or popping noise emanating from the refrigerator. •• The sound is intermittent, maybe only one time per day, but it could happen more often. Root Cause: Dramatic changes in temperature between cooling and defrosting can cause the Fresh Food evaporator drain pan to expand and contract. Field Solution: Warning: Be sure to wear gloves during this repair. The evaporator fins are very sharp. 1. Initiate a forced defrost (RD) for a short time to ensure there is no frost on the evaporator. 2. Remove the Fresh Food section evaporator cover. 3. Release the evaporator tube from the clip at the top. 4. Lift the evaporator and drain pan up and out of the liner carefully. Remember that the heater may be hot.

5. Attach a sheet of foam seal to the wall behind the drain pan.

Positioning the Ice Maker Fill Tube Correctly on Direct Cool Ice Maker Refrigerators By Dennis Viereck, Regional Technical Trainer

One of the biggest “Ah-Ha Paradigms” I encountered in my second week of the Training Blitz was questions and concerns surrounding the Direct Cool Ice Maker and the service bulletin (ASC20141022001) that illustrated the correct position of the Ice Maker fill hose. On the back side of the refrigerator, you can change the depth of the fill hose where it enters the fill tube in the ceiling of the Ice Room. The bulletin explained how to inspect the fill tube in the ceiling and insure that the opening was not blocked by foam insulation. It also explained how to pull the gray hose out of the back of the refrigerator so that the black ring mark on the hose was exposed. Doing this positions the hose so that it is at or near the correct insertion depth. But - and this is important - exposing the black mark will not always get the hose to the right “Happy spot” inside the fill tube and may still allow water to splash down the fill tube and miss the funnel on the rear of the Ice maker. How do you ensure that the tube is positioned correctly? Use an inspection mirror. With an inspection mirror, you can clearly view how far the fill hose enters the fill tube. You need the fill tube to be inserted deep enough so that it does not touch the opposite wall. If your insert to tube too deeply, water can splash out and end up on the Ice Room floor when the Ice maker is being filled. The illustration below shows a fill hose positioned incorrectly and correctly.

18 HA Tech Tips

Positioning the Ice Maker Fill Tube Correctly on Direct Cool Ice Maker Refrigerators continued

The picture above shows the use of an inspection mirror, looking up into the fill tube in the back ceiling of the ice room. The tube in the picture is located in a good spot. As we stated in the bulletin, you can use the black ring mark as a guide, but inspection of the fill tube location is critical. Always look for obstructions first, and then look at the fill hose insertion depth using your inspection Mirror.

Water Leaks from the Bottom of the Door on Waterwall Dishwashers By Jason Abrams, Assistant Manager, HA Product Support

Product: All Waterwall Dishwashers

Issue: One of the openings on the lower nozzle assembly may have an obstruction. If there is an obstruction in an opening, it can angle the flow of the water down. As the water wall vane moves forward, the water stream will go underneath the water wall vane and hit under the door at the front of the tub. This will increase the water level at the front of the tub and the water will leak out.

20 HA Tech Tips

Water Leaks from the Bottom of the Door on Waterwall Dishwashers continued

Solution: Remove the motion assembly from the dishwasher. Identify the clogged opening on the lower nozzle. Use a thin screwdriver or pick to remove the obstruction. Run water through the water jet to verify that the obstruction has been removed. Reinstall the motion assembly into the dishwasher. Run a test cycle and verify that there are no leaks. If the obstruction cannot be removed, order the lower nozzle assembly (DD97-00209A).

Troubleshooting 14E Error Codes on Refrigerators With Direct Cooling Type Ice Makers By Juan Morales, Regional Technical Trainer

Refrigerators that use a direct cooling type ice-maker may display a 14E error code if the ice-maker eject sensor fails. However, there is the possibility the error may have been caused by a defective Main PCB or even a bad wiring harness. To ensure the correct part is replaced, follow the steps below: 1. Voltage Check

•• Measure the voltage between CN90 Pin 1 and a GND point on the Main PCB (J23) as shown above. •• The voltage should read between 0.6VDC and 4.6VDC. •• Verify the values using the Sensor Temperature Chart in the FT manual. •• If the voltage is incorrect, check the sensor’s resistance. 2. Resistance Check

•• Measure the resistance on CN90 between Pin 1 (BRN) and Pin 7 (GRY). •• Verify the values using the Sensor Temperature Chart in the FT manual. •• The error code indicates the sensor may be Open or Shorted, but to be absolutely certain it is the sensor and not a wiring harness, check the resistance right at the sensor. 22 HA Tech Tips

3. Resistance Check (directly from I/M)

•• If necessary, measure the resistance between the Brown and Gray wires on the I/M connector. •• If the sensor is Open or Shorted, replace the ice-maker. 4. Main PCB Voltage Check

•• Disconnect CN90, and then measure the voltage between CN90 Pin 1 and a GND point on the Main PCB (J23). •• The voltage should read approximately 5.0VDC. •• If the voltage is abnormal, replace the Main PCB.

Blocked Drain in a Refrigerator? Visit a Music Store. By Stephen Magee, Regional Technical Trainer

Over the years, there have been countless times when I needed to clear a blocked drain on a refrigerator or a freezer. Sometimes the drain was clogged, other times it was frozen, but either way, it always meant that I had to make sure I cleared any and all obstructions to prevent a redo. When I did my apprenticeship, more often than not, this meant pouring several cups of hot water into the drain and making sure that the water made its way into the drain pan below. For other obstructions, I pulled out my trusty roll of flexible curtain wire to use like a plumber’s “drain snake”. Both methods eventually had the desired effect and worked when the need arose. Fast forward to the 21st century and portable steamers are available in all shapes, sizes (and even colors) at many local stores for about the same price as a set of cheap screwdrivers. However, I couldn’t find my old, faithful roll of flexible curtain wire no matter how hard I searched at any store. Then, someone suggested that I should try using (wait for it)... a trombone cleaner. I thought the idea of clearing a blocked drain using a device that is designed to clean a musical instrument a bit strange until I saw one and as soon as I did, I knew I’d found it: my trusty old roll of curtain wire – on steroids! At last, I’d finally found what I’d been looking for and the best part – it was readily available at most local music shops and cost only about 10 bucks. The tools that can help you the most on calls aren’t always the ones that you have in your regular tool kit. Who would have thought – a trombone cleaner to clear a blocked drain on a refrigerator! Sometimes thinking outside the box can help you fix things right the first time, reduce your time on a call, and often reduce redo’s. To close, a few words of outside the box advice: Be sure to blow your own horn and share your ideas, tips, and tricks from your tool kit with your fellow team mates. You never know, they may have some tool tips and tricks for you too! Below: A trombone cleaner and a portable steamer
