Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My time at St. Lawrence this summer has flown by and I am sad to say, like all good things, it must come to an end. When I was informed by my vocations director in March that I was being assigned to St. Lawrence for the summer I was excited for two reasons. First, I already knew several people on the parish staff. Second, this was going to be my first parish assignment as a seminarian. I was eager to apply what I had learned so far in seminary and to share my gifts and talents. But over the next couple of months as I told other people where I would be spending the summer my excitement grew exponentially. Everyone that I talked to had glowing praises for this community, from people who have known Msgr. Higgins and Fr. Muhr for years and even from priests all the way in Miami! Needless to say, St. Lawrence is a very blessed parish community and I think I have been spoiled for the rest of my seminary career. From the first day I arrived here back in May I have felt very welcomed and comfortable. I can say with confidence that spending my summer with all of you has strengthened my vocation. I have had many pastoral experiences here, but my favorite has been visiting and bringing communion to those who are homebound or in the hospital. To be invited into sharing and aiding others in their suffering is a critical aspect of a priest’s vocation. It was an incredible blessing to spend time with these people, to hear their stories, and to witness their incredible faith even in the midst of great physical, emotional, and spiritual difficulties. As much as I enjoyed this particular ministry, it was at times very challenging. It is hard enough to carry our own crosses, but watching and helping others carry their cross is often extremely heartbreaking. We might ask ourselves why Jesus gives such difficult crosses to carry, but it is not for us to ask. We are only called to be faithful. In reflecting on this, I thought that the image given to us by Blessed Theresa of Calcutta is very fitting. Mother Theresa’s whole spirituality was centered on being present on Calvary, sitting at the feet of Jesus with the Blessed Mother. There is little we can do, except to be there and console the Heart of Jesus. Another great blessing has been working with the youth of St. Lawrence. During my first couple of weeks here school was still in session so I had the chance to visit classrooms, observe class presentations, play kickball, and share my vocation story. I know how important this school is to the history and identity of St. Lawrence, so I was honored to be welcomed into that very special family. I also spent time working at Vacation Bible School, hanging out with the young adults at Next Step, and going to Camp Hidden Lake with the middle school youth. For me, Catholic School and youth group was vital to developing my relationship with Jesus and ultimately discovering this call to one day share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ. If in any small way I may have helped your child grow closer to and deeper in love with our Lord, I would be extremely happy and humbled. Lastly, I want to say thank you. Thank you to the priests and deacons for being examples of holiness as well as truly joyful and sincere servants of mercy. Thank you to the entire parish staff who was so helpful in making me familiar with the day-to-day routine of the office and for inviting me into the community they have developed over the years. Thank you to the sacristans, ushers, and everyone who makes Sunday and daily mass run smoothly, for allowing me to be involved in so many areas of the liturgy. And of course, thank you parishioners of St. Lawrence for welcoming me into your family. I have learned so much about myself and about the love of a parish community. Please pray for me as I continue my seminary studies. Know that you will always be in my heart and in my prayers.

Zach Brasseur
