Twenty-two seniors spend part of summer at boys, girls state

By Amanda Wheeler Twenty-two Warrior juniors had the opportunity to attend Boys and Girls State the week of May 30-June 4 on the campuses of Northern State in Aberdeen and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Boys and Girls State is a summer program enabling South Dakota students to understand the system of government in South Dakota. These juniors, now seniors, had the opportunity to hear speeches from political leaders including Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds, Attorney General Marty Jackley, Representative Kristi Noem and Governor Dennis Daugaard. Among WHS’s representatives Feature at Girls State were seniors Feven Goitom, Hailey Nold, Skylar Moen, Lauren Zimbeck, Allison Schenkel, Morgan Small, Kaytie Vroman, Grace Wylie, Lily Larsen and Annie Farmer. Boys State delegates included seniors Calvin Poderzay, Jonah Nelson, Aaron Yam, Noah Brown, Jonathan Loofe, Isaac Goeman, Carson Herbert, Ryan Le, Spencer Delange, Seth VandeBraak, Zach Heupel and Andrew Erdmann. Herbert said Boys State was a fun time. “I met a lot of new people and had a great learning experience,” Herbert said. Le said he also had a great time at Boys State. “Although I lost the race for Mayor of Chicago in a landslide, I had a great time working with my peers in the House of Representatives,” Le said.

Key pens Banner today in 1814 History.com (TNS) On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which was later set to music and in 1931 became America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry,” was written after Key witnessed the Maryland fort being bombarded by the British during the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the sight of a lone U.S. flag still flying over Fort McHenry at daybreak, as reflected in the now-famous words of the “Star-Spangled Banner”: “And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.”

Our History Francis Scott Key was born on August 1, 1779, at Terra Rubra, his family’s estate in Frederick County (now Carroll County), Maryland. He became a successful lawyer in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and was later appointed U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. The poem was printed in newspapers and eventually set to the music of a popular English drinking tune called “To Anacreon in Heaven” by composer John Stafford Smith. People began referring to the song as “The Star-Spangled Banner” and in 1916 President Woodrow Wilson announced that it should be played at all official events. It was adopted as the national anthem on March 3, 1931. Francis Scott Key died of pleurisy on January 11, 1843. Today, the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1914 is housed at the Smithsonian Institution.
