Volleyball team honors teachers tonight By Taylar Erickson and Seth Benson The Warrior volleyball team, who did not crack the Sportswriters Poll this week despite defeating No. 1 Harrisburg in five games last Thursday, will take on the Roosevelt Rough Riders tonight at 7 p.m. at WHS. Roosevelt has an 8-10 record. They’re also unrated. The Warriors are 6-8

and  are ahead of the Riders in seed point average 40.07-39.33 after picking up 50 points with their win over Harrisburg. WHS lost to Roosevelt in their only meeting so far this season in three games Aug. 31 at Roosevelt. Coach Kelly Schroeder said he was happy with the win over Harrisburg. “It is always fun to take down the No. 1 seed, and we

need to use the win as momentum going into the second half of the season,” Schroeder said. “We went over goals this week and hope to be consistent with those, accomplish them, and bring it all together and finish strong.” Tonight is also Teacher Appreciation Night. Before the game, each varsity player will honor an educator from their present or past.

Junior elected to top office at Girls State Senior Ruhama Tereda chosen as governor

By Madelyn Moravec Senior Ruhama Tereda had a very successful summer as she entered the world of politics. Tereda was one of nine juniors (now seniors) chosen to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State government simulation event in Vermillion, and was elected to the top office at the event, governor. She was in Vermillion for six days at the event. “The whole week was very intense,” Tereda said. “It Feature was inspiring to be surrounded in an environment of motivated young women who ultimately encouraged me to run for governor.” As she progressed through primaries and worked on her platform, “Phenomenal Woman,” she drew inspiration from Maya Angelou’s poem and highlighted her notion that character and heart, despite what society imposes upon you, should always be embraced. Her goal was to send a message of self empowerment and the idea of being an informed and empathetic citizen. “Upon being elected, I was fortunate enough to receive love from both

Tereda said she would recommend the experience of Girls or Boys State to this year’s and future juniors. “Overall, it was a remarkable experience that makes me very excited for Girls State next year where I have the opportunity to preside as the governor,” she said.

The presidential hopefuls, John F. Kennedy, a Democratic senator of Massachusetts, and Richard M. Nixon, the vice president of the United States, met in a Chicago studio to discuss U.S. domestic matters. Kennedy emerged the apparent winner from this first of four televised debates, partly owing to his greater ease before the camera than Nixon, who, unlike Kennedy, seemed nervous and declined to wear makeup. Nixon fared better in the second and third debates, and on Oct. 21 the candidates met to discuss foreign affairs in their fourth and final debate. Less than three weeks later, on Nov. 8, Kennedy won 49.7 percent of the popular vote in one of the closest presidential elections in U.S. history, surpassing by a fraction the 49.6 percent received by his Republican opponent. One year after leaving the vice presidency, Nixon returned to politics, winning the Republican nomination for governor of California. Although he lost the election, Nixon returned to the national stage in 1968 in a successful bid for the presidency. Like Lyndon Johnson in 1964, Nixon declined to debate his opponent in the 1968 presidential campaign. Televised presidential debates returned in 1976, and have been held in every presidential campaign since.
