Tony Green 2 Glovers Yard 121 Havelock Road Brighton BN1 6GN Director of Environment (Highway Engineering & Projects) Attention D. Abbott Bartholomew House BRIGHTON BN1 1JE Dear Sir, Proposed Brighton & Hove (Dyke Road, North Street and Western Road Bus Priority) Amendment Order. The three measures advertised are: 1) To revoke the section of bus-only street eastbound from North Street Quadrant to the Clock Tower; 2) To create a left turning ban from East Street into North Street; 3) To reinstate a bus-only section removed in error. On behalf of Bricycles (the Brighton, Hove and District Cycling Group) and CTC (the UK’s largest cycling organisation) We object to Part 1of the above advertised Amendment Order, but support Part 2 & Part 3 on the assumption that cyclists will be allowed to use the bus lane. Reasons for objection to Part 1 The 'Statement of Reasons' says the Bus Only provision "is to be revoked on the grounds that the alternative route via North Street Quadrant is no longer available". Surely then the solution is simple - reopen North Street Quadrant. The safety of cyclists is of particular concern to us. At the time we objected strongly to the closure of North Street Quadrant. We argued that the left turn at the Clock Tower is a more difficult and hazardous manoeuvre for cyclists than turning into North Street Quadrant. When it is raining, the wet road, adverse camber, combined with oil and rubber debris from motor vehicles create a very slippery surface making the left turn particularly dangerous for cyclists. At all times it is a difficult turn for buses and virtually impossible for large lorries, whereas the North Street Quadrant turning was an easy one. Brighton & Hove is a Cycling Town and therefore should be enabling cycling. However at the Clock Tower junction the city council has discriminated against cyclists by creating a more dangerous situation than which previously existed. On safety grounds we say that North Street Quadrant should be reopened. Yours faithfully, Tony Green Bricycles & CTC
