Highlights •

The work performed in organizations (projects, processes, cases, etc.) may assume very different forms. In spite of this, it is possible to identify a set of core principles and concepts that are common to all the effective work management approaches. This research aims at (i) identify such root principles and concepts, (ii) organize them according to a work management systems ontology providing a conceptual framework for the analysis, design and in knowledge based organizations and (iii) search for common patterns intended to speed up the analysis and design of knowledge based work management systems. The research will be rooted on a set of real world business and managed in close relation to software companies willing to embed the results in their work management solutions.
