Each contestant played 18 holes Monday and will play 18 today. The individual Championship places will be determined by individual, two-day combined scores. The team championship will be determined based on the four, low aggregate scores.   Coach Doug Rinken said the meet is not over. “We have one round left, and we need to finish the best that we can finish,” Rinken said. JV football team beats Riders, stays perfect By Daniel Slaven Junior varsity football team members remained undefeated as they defeated Roosevelt 21-6 Monday afternoon at WHS to improve to 6-0 on the season. The Rough Riders got off to a strong start, scoring first in the game, but after that it was all WHS as junior Aweys Maalim scored on a 45 yard interception return for a touchdown and junior Malik Paulson had a 5-yard touchdown, followed by the successful 2-point conversion to round out the first half.

In the second half, WHS junior Dillon Madsen scored on a 34-yard touchdown reception from Robert Dougherty, followed by Madsen’s successful point-after kick. Coach Eric Struck said he was pleased. “The Warriors once again slogged it out in the mud to pick up the victory,” Struck said. “The offense found their pulse behind the offensive line and Malik Paulson. Malik ran for 93-yards and a touchdown. On the day, the Warriors rushed for 153 yards and threw

for 78, in total. Defensively, the Warriors were dominant once again with six sacks, three interceptions and one fumble recovery.” Junior Tyler Milliron said it was a good game. “We came out rough in the beginning, but then we picked it up later in the first quarter and everyone was doing their part and we got things clicking,” Milliron said. The Warriors will next travel to Sioux City, Iowa, East Monday at 4:15 p.m. at East Middle School in Morningside.

Senior competes for title as Miss Teen S.D. Senior Madeline Auvenshine first runner-up

By Sidney Kennedy If, for some reason, Miss South Dakota Teen USA cannot fulfill her duties, a WHS senior will be there to step in. Senior Madeline Auvenshine had a busy and exciting weekend as she competed in her first pageant, chasing the title of Miss Teen South Dakota at the Brandon Valley Preforming Arts Center and finishing as first runnerup Sunday. Over the two day pageant, Auvenshine comFeature peted in evening gown, athletic wear and interview competitions in front of a panel of six judges. She put in seven months of work in preparation for the pageant by traveling to Minneapolis to receive coaching. Auvenshine said the work and preparation was worth it. “The Miss South Dakota Teen USA Pageant was an amazing experience,” Auvenshine said. “I feel so blessed to have even been a part of it.” The pageant featured girls from all over the state. Auvenshine first made it into the top 10, then the top five before being selected as first runner-up.

It was Auvenshine’s first time participating in a pageant, and she said she was happy with her results. “Being first runner-up is such an honor, and I was very proud of Shania Knutson for being crowned Miss South Dakota Teen USA,” Auvenshine said. Scores to make the top five were a combination of one-third interview, evening gown and athletic wear. Auvenshine said she hopes to return next year to compete in the Miss USA division.

In the epic 252-day trial that followed the June 12, 1994, murder in the front yard of Mrs. Simpson’s condominium in Brentwood, Los Angeles, Simpson’s “dream team” of lawyers employed creative and controversial methods to convince jurors that Simpson’s guilt had not been proved “beyond a reasonable doubt,” thus surmounting what the prosecution called a “mountain of evidence” implicating him as the murderer. Despite the “mountain” of evidence, a jury took just four hours of deliberation to reach a verdict of not guilty on both murder charges. On Oct. 3, 1995, an estimated 140 million Americans listened in on radio or watched on television as the verdict was delivered. In Feb. 1997, Simpson was found liable for several charges related to the murders in a civil trial and was forced to award $33.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the victims’ families. However, with few assets remaining after his long and costly legal battle, he has avoided paying the damages. In 2007, Simpson ran into legal problems once again when he was arrested for breaking into a Las Vegas hotel room and taking sports memorabilia, which he claimed had been stolen from him, at gunpoint. On Oct. 3, 2008, he was found guilty of 12 charges related to the incident, including armed robbery and kidnapping, and sentenced to 33 years in prison.
