Senior Adam Stammer is ready for the competition this weekend. “It has been a successful competition for us in the past,” Stammer said. “Our goal for Saturday is to not let our past success make

Time flies by fast—enjoy senior year now For those of you who haven’t noticed, as unbelievable as it sounds, today officially marks mid-term of quarter one. This means winter and formal are quickly approaching, Beach Bash is right around the corner, and before we know it seniors, we’ll be dancing the night away at prom and walking across the stage at gradHear me. . . uation! I’m not trying to rush my senior year, but the truth is the Sydney Stallinga years fly by. I remember being a freshman and not being able to wait for senior year. All of the excitement about growing up and getting out into the “big kid world” just grabbed my attention. But now, as a senior for real, I wish I could go back to

freshman year where none of us quite knew who we were, or what we wanted to become. It fascinates me to talk to my fellow seniors about what they want to do after high school. On the other hand, it scares me to think that starting next year, I won’t be going to school with some of the people I have had the opportunity to go to school with since kindergarten. All this thinking has made me take a step back and just enjoy the times that are coming. I have realized that the times we have left are some of the best memories we will take with us when we leave this place that isn’t only a school, but has become a second home. It will be an extremely bittersweet moment when we all have to say our last good-byes. So for the time being, let’s just appreciate all of the wonderful people we get to surround ourselves with everyday at the best school in all the land. By Hailie Schock The WHS cheer and dance teams will compete at the Mitchell Cheer and Dance Invitational Saturday at the World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell. A full day of competition begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. WHS is the only Sioux Falls team scheduled to compete at the event, as well as the only member of the Metro Conference attending the competition. Freshman Megan Richardson, a member of

the dance team, said she is ready to compete. “We have been working really hard all season, and we’re excited to show off all of our improvements,” Richardson said. Senior Sydney Raabe of the cheer team is excited. “We have another chance to compete and improve on the mat before Metro Conference, and we have a good shot at doing well this weekend,” Raabe said. The teams will head to the Metro Conference Meet Monday.

Nobel honors world of small machines By Tina Hesman and Saeythomas Sumner Science News (TNS) SWEDEN—The world’s smallest motors — ones far too small to see with the eye — may soon drive new innovations in chemistry, biology and computing. Three pioneers of such nanotechnology were honored with the 2016 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Science Friday The Nobel Committee in Stockholm, Sweden, announced the winners on Wednesday. Jean-Pierre Sauvage works at the University of Strasbourg, France. James Fraser Stoddart is at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. and Bernard Feringa works at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. “If you had to choose three people at the top of the field, that’s it. These are the men,” says James Tour. He’s a nanomachines chemist at Rice University in Houston, Texas. To his mind, “It is a well-warranted prize.” That means that the Nobel committee selected the right people. Giving attention to the skyrocketing field of molecular motors (which this award will certainly do) should inspire more children to become scientists, says Donna Nelson. She’s an organic chemist at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. She’s also president of the American Chemical Society, based in Washington, D.C. This attention will likely also draw more funding for work in this area. As such, she says, this award “will benefit not only these three chemists, it will benefit the entire field of chemistry.” Sauvage, Stoddart and Feringa will receive their awards at a Dec. 10 ceremony in Stockholm. They will share a prize of 8 million Swedish kronor (or about $931,000).
