There’s no shame in being labeled a ‘gamer’ Some people believe in the stereotypes that gamers are lazy slobs who never do anything but eat Hot Pockets, drink Mountain Dew and stay up until 4 a.m. on a regular basis. While much of this is in fact true, not all gamers are lazy slobs. Video games are a lifestyle that require commitment, hard work, and long hours (this is where the snacks and late nights come in), but most gamers just play for the sheer joy of playing a game in their free-time. I will proudly admit that I am a part of the category that puts in long, excruciating hours of grinding through levels, missions, and games because we enjoy putting ourselves through the torture of achievement. In my mind, video games are to boys what Netflix and Starbucks are to girls. Nobody understands why we enjoy it so much—it just is. Your average Hear me. . . girl likes to spend all their money on Starbucks and then go Chayden Fitzsimmons home and bingewatch a series like “Grey’s Anatomy.” Meanwhile a gamer will spend $60 for a brand-new game, then go home and put 60+ hours into games like “NBA 2k16,” “Call of Duty,” “Counter Strike: Global Offensive,” or in my case, “Destiny.” Whenever I log in, it is a guarantee that somebody from my fireteam will be on-line. I am proud to admit that I am a gamer. I feel no shame in the title. Nobody should be ashamed to be a gamer. There is a game for anybody and everybody. There are strength in numbers, and believe me when I say this, you are not alone, my gamer friends! Senior Chayden Fitzsimmons’ gamertag is Hyper x Vacuumz.

Could cold tech market be thawing? By Paresh Dave Los Angeles Times (TNS) Just two technology stocks went public this summer—not a good sign for the long list of technology startups eyeing initial public offerings. August’s stock market slamdown, the deepest drop in nearly four years, sounded like a death knell for the IPO market in 2015.

Technology Watch

But a sign of life emerged Wednesday as Pure Storage Inc., a Mountain View, Calif., flash storage company, raised $425 million on the New York Stock Exchange. It’s unclear how much cheer that will provide for financial technology company Square and payments processing company First Data, or for nontech companies such as grocery chain Albertsons and Spanish cable network Univision, which are all preparing to go public before the end of the year. Those who prefer their glass half-empty can look at recent figures put out by consulting firm PwC: July through September turned into the slowest quarter for tech offerings since the start of 2009. Those who prefer half-full can draw some optimism from Pure Storage’s market debut. “Market weakness so far has been a drag on a majority of new stock issues this year,” Richard Peterson, senior director at S&P Capital IQ said ahead of the Pure Storage debut.
