By Erika Lehan and Maddie Vanderfeen arrior football team members lived up to their No. 1 seeding with a 53-27 win over No. 8 seed Rapid City Stevens in a quarterfinal game of the 11AAA Playoffs Thursday at Howard Wood Field. WHS came out strong and scored 47 points in the first half before the starters left the game for most of the rest of the way. Junior linebacker Brody Etreim said he is excited to advance to the semi-finals Nov. 4. “We started off slow in the beginning, letting them score more than we should have, but we came back and took a strong lead and ended up winning big,” Etreim said. WHS remains undefeated with a 10-0 record, and will now face O’Gorman in the semi-finals at 4 p.m. Nov. 4 with a trip to the 11AAA finals at the DakotaDome on the line. Warriors in hunt for a football title this fall Fall is upon us, Warriors. And really, is there a better time of year? Fall means a new school year is well under way with lots of potential for success, football hype is at its peak and the baseball playoffs are coming to an exciting finish. But most importantly, fall Hear me. . . is my favorite season because I like to hunt. For me, hunting is not just a pastime, Logan Barber but a passion. Those of you who have never been hunting might be confused as to why I enjoy it so much. There are many reasons that I enjoy the outdoors this time of year, but the first thing that comes to mind for me is the challenge and adrenaline rush that I feel

while experiencing a fall hunt. The feeling you get when you see a deer in person, flush a pheasant or have ducks landing in your decoys is indescribable. I think there are two types of people in this world— those who love hunting and those who have never tried it and don’t know that they love it yet. Speaking of hunting, the Warrior football team is deep in the hunt for another state championship and have pushed through adversity this year, including injuries and a very young team. They haven’t missed a beat all season long and are enjoying the challenge and adrenaline rush of the hunt on the football field, as well. For all these reasons, fall is an all around exciting time of year, and we should all enjoy it while it lasts because before we know it, the snow will be here and we will all be forced to go back into hibernation mode. So get outside and enjoy the fall soon. Junior Logan Barber is also a fan of summer.

By Hailie Schock WHS oral interp and debate team members will participate in the annual Pumpkinstakes Tournament Saturday at Watertown High School. Oral interp events that will be taking place at the tournament include Dramatic, Humorous, Novice and Duo Interp, Poetry, Non-Original Oratory, Storytelling, Reader’s Theatre and Discussion. Individual debate events will include Novice Extemp, Experienced

Extemp and Original Oratory at the Watertown tournament. Oral interp coach Michelle McIntyre said she is excited for the tournament and the unusual awards they hand out. “It’s a very popular tournament to attend,” McIntryre said. “It’s our first out-of-town tournament, so the team’s energy is up and ready to go. I’m hopeful we do well so everyone can take home the funky home-grown pumpkins that they hand out for awards.”

Fear real zombies this Halloween By Bruce Bower Science News (TNS) A zombie crawls through the forest. When it reaches a good spot, it freezes in place. A stalk slowly grows from its head. The stalk then spews out spores that spread, turning others into zombies.

Science Friday This is no Halloween story about the zombie apocalypse. It’s all true. The zombie isn’t a human, though. It’s an ant. And the stalk that emerges from its head is a fungus. Its spores infect other ants, which lets the zombie cycle begin anew. In order to grow and spread, this fungus must hijack an ant’s brain. However weird this might seem, it isn’t all that unusual. The natural world is full of zombies under mind control. Zombie spiders and cockroaches babysit developing wasp larvae — until the babies devour them. Zombie fish flip around and dart toward the surface of the water, seeming to beg for birds to eat them. Zombie crickets, beetles and praying mantises drown themselves in water. Zombie rats are drawn to the smell of the urine of cats that may devour them. All of these “zombies” have one thing in common: parasites. A parasite lives inside or on another creature, known as its host. A parasite may be a fungus, a worm or another tiny creature. All parasites eventually weaken or sicken their hosts. Sometimes, the parasite kills or even eats its host. But death of the host isn’t the freakiest goal. A parasite might get its host to die in a certain place, or be eaten by a certain creature. In order to accomplish these tricks, some parasites have evolved the ability to hack into the host’s brain and influence its behavior in very specific ways.
