WHS advances to district finals with win over Lynx Warriors need five sets to dispatch Brandon Valley By Jack Talley and Thomas Vissers efore last night, Warrior varsity volleyball team members hadn’t seen Brandon Valley since they fell to the Lynx in five sets in the first game of the season Aug. 27. Last night’s District 2AA opener for the Warriors looked much the same, but this time WHS defeated the Lynx in a long-lasting nail-biter 25-18, 12-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11 to advance to Saturday’s district title game. Coach Kelly Schroeder was pleased. “Last night was a great match and a great win for us against BV,” Schroeder said. “The girls played well and showed a lot of heart to finish the match. It’s tough going into set five with a loss and to still come out for a win.” WHS stat leaders included sophomore Lily Bartling with 15 kills, senior Maham

Reading is Fundamental, Warriors!

As a full-time student at WHS, I have reading period every day and a great library to help me find a good book. Reading is something that not many high school students seem to enjoy spending their time doing. Personally, I love reading—I always have a book (or two or maybe even three) in my backpack. Finding a book that will take you to a different world for a short time is no easy task. Hear me. . . First, you have to know if you like reading non-fiction or Jack Talley fiction. Fiction is a made up story that could be about just about anything. Non-fiction is a true story, usually about an event, person or place. I am a huge fan of fiction stories. Getting into an interesting fantasy world might be one of my favorite things

in the entire world. Ms. Smith, our librarian, has become accustomed to having more and more books ready for me each week. Developing a relationship with your librarian is important as a reader. They will help you find marvelous books that fit your reading level and/or style of book even when you think there is nothing left you haven’t read. Trust me, there’s always more out there for them to find. My grandmother, who is a librarian right now, started me reading at an early age and fostered my love of books. As a little kid she would help me read all sorts of books and short stories. The first novel she had me read when I was young is the surprising “Fahrenheit 451,” a classic novel I highly recommend for readers of all ages. Reading is something that takes practice, just like any other skill. So practice, practice, practice! If you need a good book, ask me (or our friendly librarian Ms. Smith) and I will try my best to help you find a book you can get lost in. Senior Jack Talley is starting a new book today.

Historic marine deal reached DPA (TNS) SYDNEY — Twentyfour countries and the European Union have reached a historic deal to designate nearly 600,000 square miles of the Ross Sea in the Antarctic region a marine protected area for the next 35 years, it was announced Friday. The decision came after Russia dropped its objections to the deal after two weeks of negotiations at a meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in Hobart, Australia.

Your green world The Antarctic Ocean Alliance lauded the “momentous agreement,” saying it was a major victory in the protection of the Antarctic Ocean. “This is the first time ever that a large scale marine protected area has been created in international waters. This is the largest marine protected area,” Elsa Evers, communications director for Antarctic Ocean Alliance said. The Ross Sea is one of the last intact marine ecosystems in the world, home to penguins, seals, toothfish, and a unique type of killer whale. It is also home to huge numbers of krill, a staple food for dozens of marine species. Environmentalists say the region is critical for scientific research, for studying how marine ecosystems function and understanding the impacts of climate change on the ocean. The commission’s decision will protect penguins, seals, whales and countless other creatures, said Andrea Kavanagh of The Pew Charitable Trusts. “Today we saw history being made. We have agreed to create a system of protection and conservation of the high seas outside of national jurisdiction,” Mike Walker, project director of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance, said.
