From the Rector’s Desk…. Today (Sunday) is our Parish Communion Breakfast immediately following the 8:30 am Mass in the Cathedral Prep Cafeteria. There is no formal program scheduled. Another great opportunity for us to share a meal and enjoy good conversation with our friends. If you did not make a reservation and still want to attend, you are in luck! Please just join us for a delicious meal at 9:15 am on Sunday in the Cathedral Prep Cafeteria. I look forward to seeing you there. Even though Thanksgiving is 18 days away, I am happy to announce that Masses here at the Cathedral will be at 6:30 am and 9:00 am. We will have the earliest mass in town on Thanksgiving. Since Fr. Mike and I both are home, we are able to offer two Masses on Thanksgiving Day. I encourage you to attend Thanksgiving Mass giving thanks to Almighty God for the many blessings we received throughout the year. Confessions will also be offered after both Masses on Thanksgiving Day. I have heard from Fr. David and he is doing well studying at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. He is looking forward to returning home for the holidays. Fr. David will be in Erie for a very short time over the Thanksgiving holiday. He is scheduled to have the 4:00 pm Mass the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I know Fr. Mike and I are looking forward to having him home, even if it is only for a few days. In January we plan to begin repairing all the kneelers in church. New foam and fabric will be installed on every kneeler which should make it more pleasant to kneel. We will remove the kneelers by sections. You may find yourself sitting in a section of pews with no kneelers for a few weeks. Once all those kneelers have been refurbished, they will be put back in and another section of kneelers will be removed. I want to thank you in advance for your patience as we continue to fix up our beautiful Cathedral. It is with great joy that we welcome John and Nancy Roskovich to St. Peter Cathedral. Know what an honor it is to have you as members of our parish family. Starting next Saturday and for three consecutive Saturdays following, we have weddings here at the Cathedral. Our last wedding for the year is scheduled for the Saturday after Christmas. We still have many openings for 2018 Weddings here at the Cathedral. If you are interested in getting married here at the Cathedral please call me at (814) 453-6677 and I will be happy to help you scheduled your wedding. We hope to open our 2019 Wedding Book shortly. I will be sure to let you know when we do.
COME AND SEE “They said to him, ‘Rabbi, where are you staying?’ He said to them ‘Come, and you will see.’” (John 1:38-9) Spending time with people and “seeing where they live” is the way to get to know them. Jesus wants us to get to know Him and through Him, His Father. We are blessed with many opportunities to do just that. We read about His life and love in the Scriptures, we can witness his love and gifts in nature in the faces of those we love and in the kindness and struggles of so many. Prayer is a particularly powerful way to get to know Jesus. It is the way God reveals Himself to us in a very personal way. We are blessed with many ways to pray. We pray in community in the words of the Mass. We pray the silent prayer of the Rosary, prayers we learned as children and the Divine Office knowing those same words are prayed by millions. We pray in our own words that express our thoughts, desires and gratitude. We don’t even need words to dwell in the silence that allows us to hear the voice of God, sometimes as only a whisper. However we pray, prayer is the way to “Come and See” where Jesus lives, who Jesus is and who He wants us to be. Sometimes it takes time to become comfortable, but as we begin to enjoy the time spent, we find it easier to adjust our routine and prioritize time for prayer every day. Jesus wants us to know Him. We are His priority and He want to be ours. “A daily habit of prayer is like the tide—the waves just keep coming in and out, and over time they change the coastline.” (Matthew Kelly in Rediscover the Rosary, DynamicCatholic.com) Pray with these very familiar passages. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” (John 14: 27) “I came that [you] may have life.” (John 10:10)
CONCERT SERIES CONTINUES WITH ORGAN RECITAL ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2017 AT 4:00PM
Kenneth Danchik, Associate Organist of St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh, earned a Master’s Degree in Organ and Sacred Music from Duquesne University, and the Fellowship diploma from the American Guild of Organists. He is especially attuned to the organ music of American composers, and French composers of the classic through contemporary eras. A frequent visitor to the organ lofts of Paris, he will be returning to play a solo recital at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in the fall of 2019. His Pittsburgh cathedral responsibilities include playing the monumental Beckerath Organ, accompanying the choir, and directing the Cathedral Ringers handbell choir. In addition to his cathedral music ministry, he is active as a recitalist, organ teacher and composer.
The Bishop's Breakfast Christmas donation drive was very successful last year. We thought, why not do it again? The date is set for Tuesday, December 12, 2017. We would love for all of you to be involved this year at a level you feel most comfortable at. It was helpful last year to have additional volunteers helping with the clothing drive and will welcome your help. WE ARE ASKING FOR *Warm blankets *Socks for men, women and children - warm socks *Boxers and t-shirts in all sizes for men *Clothing for men, women and children - all sizes. Last year the adults shopped for their children. *Warm hats, gloves and scarves. *Hoodies and jackets for men, women and children This is the beginning. We could use your help in recruiting volunteers and items for our clients. Bishop Persico will once again attend and pass out the gifts and offer encouraging words to our clients. A member of our parish will be available after all the weekend Masses to collect any donations for this celebration starting October 21 until November 11, 2017.
