PARISH MISSION STATEMENT “The Community of St. Monica Catholic Church is a Multi-Cultural Parish who faithfully worships God and proclaims the Gospel.”

Sunday November 17, 2013 Thirty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time By your perseverance you will secure your lives. Luke 21:19

To Whom Shall We Go? We show courage by hanging on when our faith is attacked or we are disappointed by the Church, when it appears to be drifting in a direction that we dislike and when we may feel embarrassed to belong to it. Why do so? Because Jesus gave himself irrevocably to a group of weak and foolish disciples, and remained bound to them even when they rejected him. How can we then dare to distance ourselves from the Church if God does not? And who am I to claim any superiority? It would make me look like a Pharisee shocked at Jesus’ eating and drinking with tax collectors and prostitutes. And where would I go anyway? When Jesus asked Peter if he would go, he said: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). Our endurance is sustained by hanging on to those words of eternal life, meditating on the gospels, rather than always fretting about ecclesiastical politics and churchy gossip.

TALENT, TREASURE, AND TIME "Some were speaking of how the temple was adorned with precious stones and votive offerings. Jesus said, 'These things you are contemplating -the day will come when not one stone will be left on another."' Luke 21:5 Our material world, as wonderful and beautiful as it is, will one day cease to exist. It is a sobering thought, but one that helps us detach from our reliance on things and places our reliance on God.

At the end of the day, ask your spouse or child if they can guess which one you picked. PARENTING POINTERS: Prepare your child for Thanksgiving by pointing out little things this next week that are unexpected treasures. IMMIGRATION REFORM - On November 7, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, on behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, wrote a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner that called upon members of the House of Representatives to address immigration reform legislation as soon as possible. Cardinal Dolan cited the ongoing suffering of immigrants and their families caused by a broken immigration system as well as the moral imperative of addressing this issue in a nation dedicated to liberty for all: “As pastors, we [the bishops] witness each day the human consequences of a broken immigration system,” he wrote. “Families are separated through deportation, migrant workers are exploited in the workplace; and migrants die in the desert…As a moral matter, our nation cannot continue to receive the benefits of the work and contributions of undocumented immigrants without extending them the protection of the law. Keeping these human beings as a permanent underclass of workers who are unable to assert their rights or enjoy the fruits of their labor is a stain on the soul of the nation.” Let your elected representatives know that you are concerned about this urgent issue.
