Three WHS dancers perform in ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ Classic opens Friday at historic Orpheum Theater downtown

By Madi Forseth “The Nutcracker” ballet is a traditional holiday favorite, and three Warriors are a part of the Dance Gallery studio’s performance of the classic at the Historic Orpheum Theater in downtown Sioux Falls opening Friday. Junior Emelia Skogstad, who plays the Dew Drop Fairy and Angel of Dreams in “The Nutcracker,” says the ballet is a great way to kickstart the holiday spirit. “Seeing this show would be a great way to start off the holiday season,” Feature Skogstad said. “I’m very excited about the upcoming shows to see all of our hard work pay off.” Brother and sister sophomore Caleb Smith and senior Katelyn Smith are also members of the cast. The three WHS students began rehearsal for the event in August and have practiced every week on Sundays and in many after school rehearsals and Friday-Sunday rehearsals “The Nutcracker” will be present-

ed for two weekends, opening Friday at 4 p.m., and continuing Saturday at 2 p.m. It will also be presented Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. In the second weekend shows are at 7 p.m. Dec. 1, 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 2, and 2 p.m. Dec. 3. Katelyn Smith has come fullcircle. “I’ve been in Dance Gallery’s ‘Nutcracker’ since 2005, beginning as a little cupcake,” Katelyn Smith said. “I have been several roles over the years, but the Sugar Plum Fairy is the most special to me. It’s a role that every little girl dreams of dancing someday. It’s funny because when I was a cupcake I danced with the Sugar Plum Fairy, and now I am the Sugar Plum Fairy and I dance with my students who I teach ballet to.” She will perform a solo and then a Pas de Deux with her brother, Caleb Smith, the first weekend only. She said it’s going to be both happy and sad for her to take the stage. “I am so excited to perform in my last ‘Nutcracker,’ but I know

Edison announces phonograph History.com (MCT) American inventor Thomas Edison announced his invention of the phonograph, a way to record and play back sound, today in 1877. Edison stumbled on one of his greatest inventions while working on a way to record telephone communication at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. His work led him to experiment with a stylus on a tinfoil cylinder, which, to his surprise, played back the short poem he had recorded, “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Public demonstrations of the phonograph made the Yankee inventor world famous, and he was dubbed the “Wizard of Menlo Park.”

Our History Edison set aside this invention in 1878 to work on the incandescent light bulb, and other inventors moved forward to improve on the phonograph. A decade later in 1887, Edison resumed work on the device, using the wax-cylinder technique developed by Charles Tainter. Although initially used as a dictating machine, the phonograph proved to be a popular tool for entertainment, and in 1906 Edison unveiled a series of musical and theatrical selections to the public through his National Phonograph Company. Continuing to improve on models and cylinders over the years, the Edison Disc Phonograph debuted in 1912 with the aim of competing in the popular record market. Edison’s discs offered superior sound quality but were not compatible with other popular disc players. During the 1920s, the early record business suffered with the growth of radio, and in 1929 recording production at Edison ceased forever. Edison, who acquired an astounding 1,093 patents in his 84 years, died in 1931.
