AA teams begin practice today in S.D.

W

By Cyler Melvin and Sophie Nieman arrior basketball players took to the gyms officially for the first time this morning, as the first day of practice for both boys and girls was allowed for AA schools today in South Dakota. After failing to make the State AA Tournament for either boys or girls last season, both teams will be thirsty for success this season and looking to take advantage of the new Sweet 16 tournament format at the end of the season to qualify for this year’s tournaments. Both the Boys and Girls State AA Tournaments will be held at the same time again this year, March 15-17 at the Premiere Center in Sioux Falls. Practice this week will be for students who have all their paperwork on file in the activities office, including physical forms. Boys will practice after school today, Tuesday morning, Tuesday after school,  Wednesday morning followed by roster decisions that morning after practice. Girls will practice after school today, Tuesday and Wednesday and roster decisions will be made Wednesday. Games will begin with a boys and girls doubleheader with St. Thomas More Dec. 9 at WHS. The boys also host Roosevelt Dec. 12 and the girls Moorhead Dec. 15 at WHS.

Get ready to have fun at formal Saturday George’s Café (A.K.A. the commons) will be hopping this Saturday. The time has come where we get our fancy dresses, high heels, nice ties and of course our dance moves ready for Winter Formal. That’s Hear me. . . right, Warriors— it may be near 70 degrees out today, but Winter Madi Forseth Formal is only five days away! Having gone to many dances in high school, I advise you to have as much responsible fun as possible and make this dance one to remember. Don’t be self-conscience. If your date is feeling awkward, then pump them up with a

complement. Girls, don’t wear too high of heels, because you will regret it—wear a comfortable dress, as well. You don’t have to match colors with your date, and if you don’t even have a date—who cares? Some people may be freaking out at this point if they don’t have a date, but don’t fret—you still have plenty of time. Guys, have the courage to ask the girl you want to go with and make a poster with a catchy slogan, like “formal would be great, will you be my date?” Most importantly, have fun getting ready with your friends, going out to eat somewhere other than Bagel Boy, and dancing the night away. Do something fun with your group after the dance, as well. No one should have an excuse not to be there, so I hope to see everyone in the commons this Saturday! Senior Madi Forseth is still waiting for Dino to ask her to formal.

Stores see Black Friday sales surge By Tiffany Hsu Los Angeles Times (TNS) The Thanksgiving and Black Friday back-to-back shopping events proved to be more popular with Americans than they were last year, according to industry data. The National Retail Federation pegged the number of unique shoppers Thursday through Sunday at more than 141 million, up from 139 million last year. Many shopped multiple times, resulting in more than 248 million people waiting in line, up from 247 million in 2012, according to the trade group. Average spending per shopper, however, fell to $407.02 from $423.55 last year. Foot traffic on Thanksgiving was up 27% to nearly 45 million people. Last year, 35 million consumers went shopping on the holiday. A quarter of all weekend shoppers were in position at stores by 8 p.m. on Thursday. Black Friday was by far the biggest consumption day, with more than 92 million shoppers, compared with 89 million last year. More than three-quarters of Americans ages 18 to 34 were likely to hit stores or retail websites over the four-day stretch, according to the retail trade group. “By most accounts, it looked like a very busy weekend,” Shawn DuBravac, chief economist of the Consumer Electronics Assn., said in a conference call with reporters Sunday. The trade group said that 131 million adults did or said they would shop before the weekend was out. Thanksgiving saw 41 million adults out spending money, compared to 21 million last year. Among technology gifts, tablets were most popular, purchased by 39% of shoppers who bought electronics over the weekend, according to the CEA. The gadgets are already in 45% of homes -- a percentage that might leap to 55% by the end of the year, DuBravac said.
