God of night-whispered wisdom, forgive us for the times we fail to seek your will or heed your call. Forgive us when we let our love for family or friends or church or nation or race blind us to their faults – and ours.
SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON

“One of these All Saints Days our names will be read. We are the potential saints for future generations. We are the shoulders on which others will stand. Will we be ancestors who sat on their hands or ancestors who raised their hands? Sometimes we forget that we aren’t just living our busy lives. We’re also laying a foundation, molding a future and establishing a legacy. How is it going? …As we remember these strong shoulders on which we stand, we are challenged to strengthen our own shoulders. We are ancestors in the making after all, saints for a generation yet unborn. It is an awesome opportunity. Rise up, O saints of God!” “Living by the Word”, Mary W. Anderson (The Christian Century: Thinking Critically Living Faithfully, October 18, 2003)

TU PUEDES / YOU CAN MISSION 10TH ANNIVERSARY NAJAYO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC BRIEF HISTORY (1998 - 2008) In 1998, when Westminster Presbyterian Church celebrated its 100th Anniversary, it also commissioned Ruben & Debora Damiani to begin the Tú Puedes Mission in the Dominican Republic, their native land. Through God’s gracious blessings, and the support of member churches from New Brunswick and New York City Presbyteries, churches from other denominations, Tapestry Funds, and family and friends, Tú Puedes Mission has effectively reached out to the Najayo community. Tú Puedes / You Can Mission’s Initial Mission Focus For the first few years, Tú Puedes’ missionaries focused their efforts primarily on distributing clothing, shoes, vitamins, medication for parasites, and Christmas gifts for the children on el Día de los Reyes. They hosted many Health Fairs with the support of local doctors and dentists. They taught sewing, ESL and computer skills to the adults. Establishment of Tú Puedes / You Can Mission School In 2003, Tú Puedes Mission began focusing on the children by establishing a school which offered classes from 1st grade through 6th grade. Within two years, it became an officially accredited educational institution by the Dominican government. Presently, there are over 580 students enrolled in pre-school through 11th grade, 9 teachers, 3 support staff and one Director, for AM & PM Sessions. Tú Puedes School has been rated fifteenth in quality among all the schools of the Dominican Republic, and its students have scored in the 98th percentile on standardized tests. Construction of Tú Puedes / You Can Mission Center In 2004, Tú Puedes Mission Center’s construction began with the building of the educational facility. Blueprints include a future outdoor physical education area, chapel, library, health facility, and living quarters for visiting missionaries. Currently, there are 9 classrooms, two restrooms, an office for the Director, and a computer room. Dedication of Tú Puedes / You Can Mission & Educational Facility In June of 2008, a nine member delegation of New Brunswick Presbytery, officially dedicated Tú Puedes Mission and Educational Center. They participated in an 8th grade graduation ceremony, led a Vacation Bible School program, and worshiped and fellowshipped with our Dominican sisters and brothers. This delegation is now called to inspire others to participate in God’s mission in Najayo, Dominican Republic.

Biography - Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Lewis The Reverend Jacqui Lewis, Ph.D. is the Senior Minister/Minister for Vision, Worship and the Arts at Middle Collegiate Church in New York City. Jacqui felt God calling her to ministry when she was a child in Chicago. “In lots of ways—my first communion at our Presbyterian Church; the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; at camp as a teen in Michigan; directing my college gospel choir—I felt God calling me to an artistic, multicultural ministry of reconciliation. Middle feels to me like the culmination of all of the dreams I have had of church— it is a rehearsal of the reign of God. It is home.” Home for Jacqui’s family was on Air Force bases. They landed in Chicago, where she went to grammar school and high school. Jacqui attended Northwestern University (“I was pretending to be a chemical engineer…”) and then graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, with a B.S. in Business Administration. Jacqui spent eight years at Eastman Kodak Company, first as a buyer, then as a manager in Human Resources, and finally in sales before going to seminary. “I used to think that I was running away from ministry for all that time, but now I know how much all of those experiences are essential to the ministry I do in the world.” Jacqui earned her Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1992, focusing on preaching and education. She earned prizes in Urban Ministry, Music, Pastoral Theology, and Care. After graduation, Jacqui worked in two congregations in Trenton. One was a new church development and community center called the Imani Community Church, the other was a changing “legacy “ congregation Westminster Presbyterian Church. “Ours was a rich multicultural experiment, one that cemented my commitment to multicultural and multiracial congregations as a way to deconstruct discrimination. When we practice living together in congregations, we learn lessons for all of our lives.” Jacqui’s ministry in Trenton led her to ponder how spirituality shapes people’s lives. She earned both a Master of Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Religion (2002) and Society: Psychology and Religion (2004) from Drew University. Her dissertation is an identity study of clergy who serve multiracial and multicultural congregations. Jacqui’ has written three books, the third of which, The Power of Story: A Guide for Leaders in Multiracial/Multicultural Congregations was published in 2008. Part of Jacqui’s job is to spread the spirit of Middle Church beyond its walls. She is a sought-after speaker at denominational conferences on the multiracial/multicultural future and has spoken at Reformed Church in America, Presbyterian, and Methodist conferences. She has been interviewed on several media outlets including “30 Good Minutes.” She is an adjunct professor at Union Theological Seminary in preaching and worship as well as being on the faculty of the Center for Arts in Religious Education (CARE) at the Graduate Theological Union, at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
In Memory of WPC’s - Minister of Music E. Stanley Stroman
In Memory of WPC’s Minister of Music E. Stanley Stroman E. Stanley Stroman was a muli-talented performance artist, known for his signature presentations in various genres. Stan, as he was affectionately known to his friends, was a Trenton-born musicologist, mentor, singer, and teacher. He taught in the Trenton Public School System for 20 years. During that time, he shared his many musical talents innumerable times with students, staff, parents and the community. He had a wide repertoire of music that he adeptly and comfortably performed to the joy of his audience. He was also a SEED facilitator for the district. A graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, Mr. Stroman attended Princeton Ballet School as well as the Lee Strasburg Theatre Institute in NYC before embarking upon private vocal training with Dr. Eugene Thamon Simpson and launching a career as a serious solo singer. Stan’s many talents earned him a debut at Carnegie Hall as well as and an operatic debut at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, PA. and various performances in places as far flung as the Vatican in Rome, and Ghana, West Africa. During the past several years, Mr. Stroman studied traditional West-African folk culture under the tutelage of Baba Kwame Ishangi (a student of Dr. Babatunde Olatunji) studying culture, ethnic music, and spirituality. As he continued to engage his interest in ethnomusicology, theology, and social justice, Mr. Stroman was involved in musical theatre and sacred vocal performances in NYC. Over the course of his career Stanley served as a musician and vocalist for the Imani Community Church of Trenton, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Trenton and Middle Collegiate Church of NYC, where he became a member. The vitality and authenticity he brought to his craft was inspiring and genuine.

Pastors On Parade By William R. Carson Jr. I had a dream the other night, when everything was still. I dreamt I met all Westminster's pastors climbing heaven's hill. With 16 communicants, the lead-off minister was Isaac M. Patterson. After five years, the membership hit 63 and Sunday School 241. George H. Ingram followed for 18 long prosperous and war years; The church was moved to its present site despite the congregation's fears. Westminster's women had new pews installed; 325 members were enthralled. Under Charles T. Leber's one year in the sun, Membership soared to 371. Reverend Robert L. Clark, Jr., had five years of great successes; Cook Estate money was first used for operating expenses. William M. Boaz climbed aboard three weeks before the 1929 crash, And for thirty years, he guided Westminster's positive upward dash. Cook Hall was built, and the new church was finally erected. 691 members got what they had expected. Pastor Emeritus Philip R. Zink became the leader in 1960 and retired 14 years later on a sad mom. During his tenure, the education building was built and shut-in Christmas caroling was bom. The Camp Fire Girls group was organized and Father and Son banquets were begun, A Spanish congregation used the sanctuary, putting the devil on the run. Serve the Lord with gladness was his creed, And his sermons were a treat indeed. Pastor Zink was joined by Associate Pastor Edward Clydesdale And Assistant Pastor Leo Forsberg kept the pulpit all male. In 1975 came Dr. Richard S. McConnell for 8 innovative years: Covered dish meals with annual congregation confabs and Lenten suppers amid cheers. Flyers first appeared in weekly bulletins, While Invite-A-Friend Sundays cleared our sins.
As he left to preach in New York's Clarence City, Westminster's membership stood at 460. For the years from 1984 to '87, Dana W. Livesay was the leader sent from heaven. Dana's help with the I.O.C. and his stance to fight crime Rehabilitated local neighborhoods in our time. Under his reign, Westminster became Trenton's most prestigious church. The mayor attended services so not to be left in the lurch. Ten years before Westminster's one hundredth anniversary, Its first lady pastor, Lorne Rowland-Skinner, showed the way. Under her guidance, church committees accomplished their goals. Mission statements were established in order to save souls. Jacqueline L. Melsness followed for eleven months to the day. Ralph R. Thompson came next and led for a year in a take-charge way. Then came our third lady leader in a short time frame. Karen Sue Hernandez-Gen is her entire name. She took over in 1995 and started Westminster's congregation revival, As a multiracial, multicultural and intergenerational survival. Her dedication and enthusiasm has saved Westminster. Many young people, baptisms and new members have been the answer. Then I met the various interim and stated supply pastors through the years. Dr. Diogenes Allen and Dr. John Wiley Nelson brought cheers. Patricia Daley, Barbara North and Kate Bilis-Bastos were dears. From one end of town to the other, John E. Melsness was like "big brother." For three years until 1998, As the Cluster Youth Pastor, he did great. Trenton's youth thought he was just swell; His Sunday sermons rang a bell. Ken Applegate was in a class by himself. He could swim like a fish and eat like an elf. From the 1998 Anniversary Program
