Interp team earns second consecutive ‘School of Excellence’ honor at state WHS earns superior ratings in four of seven events in Sturgis By Maham Shah and Erin Thompson ral Interp team members earned the “School of Excellence Award” this past Friday and Saturday at the State Festival in Sturgis. This honor was given to WHS after team members earned four superior ratings at the festival. In order to qualify as a superior, each contestant must have a superior composite score from two out of the three judges. This year is the second consecutive year WHS has received this honor. Coach Michelle McIntyre was proud. “The fact that we now have two in a row is really exciting for us, and it is a special honor for this group of seniors,” McIntyre said. “They began on the team as freshmen and helped grow the team their four years, so it is a great honor to have earned this.” Superior ratings at state went to seniors Salina Keleta in drama, Chris Person in humor, Angel Akurienne in poetry and Amellia Klein, Jordan Allen, Jazmin Sanchez, Keleta and Akurienne in readers theater.

Preparing Warriors for battle...

Martin prepares to take over head athletic training position at WHS By Maham Shah and Carter Keller A healer who has been providing guidance, preparation and relief to Warrior athletes for several years will leave WHS soon. WHS athletic trainer Dustin Gebur of CORE Orthopaedics of the Avera Medical Group will be moving on to another assignment in the organization after being promoted. Before leaving, he will spend time reviewing WHS procedures with replacement athletic trainer Caitlyn Martin, who said she can’t wait to begin her new assignment. “I’m excited, but nervous,” Martin said. “Excited to step into the head role of athletic trainer, but it being my first year makes me nervous.” Martin said she still has a lot to learn, but is ready. “I have never been an athletic Feature trainer for basketball before, so I will be learning lots in the upcoming months,” she said. “But I am excited for the experience.” Martin said she has always wanted to be an athletic trainer, and it makes it even better for her to be back in her hometown of Sioux Falls where she was born and raised. Since graduation, she has worked her way up to a position as a head athletic trainer. “I was recently an assistant athletic trainer, but ever since high school I knew I wanted to be an athletic trainer,” Martin said. “I am originally from Sioux Falls, but went to school at Weber State University in Utah.

It’s great to be back in Sioux Falls because I love it here.” Weber said she is thrilled to be taking a spot at WHS because of the great people and tradition of athletic excellence she is surrounded with here. “Everything about Washington is great,” Martin enthused. “Working with coaches and athletes has been fun so far. I was really happy to be a part of the football championship! All the athletes and staff are amazing to be around and work with. I look forward to all the wonderful things to come at WHS.”

John Lennon shot in NYC today in 1980 History.com (TNS) On Dec. 8, 1980, John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles, the rock group that transformed popular music in the 1960s, was shot and killed by an obsessed fan in New York City. The 40-year-old artist was entering his luxury Manhattan apartment building when Mark David Chapman shot him four times at close range with a .38-caliber revolver. Lennon, bleeding profusely, was rushed to the hospital but died en route. For a week, hundreds of bereaved fans kept a vigil outside the Dakota—Lennon’s apartment building— and demonstrations of mourning were held around the world.

Our History The Beatles sold millions of records and starred in hit movies such as A Hard Day’s Night (1964). Lennon was considered the intellectual Beatle and certainly was the most outspoken of the four. He caused a major controversy in 1966 when he declared that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus,” prompting mass burnings of Beatles’ records by conservatives. He later became an anti-war activist and flirted with communism in the lyrics of solo hits like “Imagine,” recorded after the Beatles disbanded in 1970. John Lennon is memorialized in “Strawberry Fields,” a section of Central Park across the street from the Dakota that wife Yoko Ono landscaped in honor of her husband.
