Three football team members sign to play at D-1 colleges

Other D-1 signings still anticipated Feb. 7 By Caitlyn Wolfgang hree-members of the three time state 11AAA champion Warrior football team took advantage of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) early signing day Wednesday to sign with regional schools. Senior team members Will Farniok signed with the University of Nebraska, Brock Walker with the University of Minnesota and Zach Heins with South Dakota State University (SDSU) at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Avera Sports Institute in Sioux Falls. “It was an amazing moment with all my brothers and finally becoming a Husker,” Farniok said. Farniok has lost only one game that he played in his four years at WHS, a record of 43-1—8-0 as a freshman on the JV team and 35-1 as a three-year starter on varsity. “It was very exciting being able to officially become a Jackrabbit, and I’m very happy I could do it along with my teammates and friends,” Heins said. Heins also only lost one game that he played in his four years at WHS, a record of 51-1—8-0 as a freshman on the freshman team; 8-0 on the JV team and three-years as varsity starter 35-1. “A dream became reality alongside my lifetime brothers,” Walker enthused. Walker started one game on varsity as a freshman that the Warriors lost, meaning he lost two games that he played in his four years at WHS, a

Senior Seth Benson, who verbally committed to SDSU, did not sign with the school Wednesday after receiving a recent offer from the University of Iowa. He will make his decision later. Coach Chad Stadem is very proud. “It’s a very exciting time for these guys going on to play at a high level,” Stadem said. “Having four guys from the senior class to play Division I football is pretty amazing.” The signing was designed only for FBS/FCS football players. The rest of the WHS football/ soccer commits will take place Feb. 7, 2018.

the varsity boys and freshman girls at 7:30 p.m. These times are adjusted slightly from what was originally published for tonight’s event. The varsity boys (1-2) are ready for a win after falling to the Lincoln Patriots in overtime Tuesday. It will not be an easy win, however, as the Marshall boys are 6-0 and rated No. 4 in Minnesota Class 3A.

Senior Topher Zahn said they will need to play hard tonight to secure the win. “As a team, we thought we played pretty good on Tuesday, but we will have to be ready to play as good or better to compete with a really good team tonight,” Zahn said. The varsity girls (0-4) are looking for their first win of the season tonight.

There’s much to do in Sioux Falls this break It’s a Friday night, school’s been out for a week, and it’s 17 degrees outside. Most people our age sit around and think about how Sioux Falls has nothing to offer at this time of year, but I beg to differ. Grab yourself a cup of hot chocolate and go cosmic ice skating at the Scheels Iceplex, give a few hours of your day to volunteer time at The Banquet, or hey, call your grandma—you know she’s been waiting! The point is whether or not Hear me. . . you are doing something you enjoy, or just simply being Marlene Valdovinos productive, Christmas break is a good time to appreciate what your city has to offer. Sioux Falls is generally underrated, but what’s underrated about a city that has at least five different chicken joints and a Christmas show at the falls? Enjoy the little things this Christmas. If any of these ideas don’t sound appealing to you, then go old school and make some snow angels, watch all “The Santa Clause” movies, sneak in your parents room to see if you find any Christmas gifts, and spread some holiday joy! Junior Marlene Valdovinos wishes you feliz Navidad!

North Korea blamed for cyber attack By Noah Bierman Tribune Washington Bureau (TNS) WASHINGTON — The White House officially blamed North Korea on Tuesday for the cyberattack in May known as WannaCry that infected hundreds of thousands of computers in 150 countries, affecting health care, financial services and vital infrastructure.

Technology Watch Thomas P. Bossert, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, noted in a briefing with reporters that the “consequences were beyond economic.” He warned that North Korea’s “malicious behavior is growing more egregious.” Bossert did not specify what evidence American officials have to blame North Korea, citing security issues, but he cited the country’s prior attacks as revealing hallmarks of how Pyongyang and its network of hackers operates. He said other allied countries had joined the United States in making the determination. The administration did not announce any penalties on the regime, which is already subject to severe sanctions over its nuclear program. “They want to hold the entire world at risk,” Bossert said of North Korea’s rulers, referring to the nation’s nuclear and missile provocations as well as its alleged cyberattack.
