Birds of Coal Point – Winter 2013 Surveys Report 4th July 2013 Another beautifully fine day for birds and birdwatchers presented itself for the Winter Surveys and despite once again falling within school holidays every site was completely devoid of people and/or dogs. What wonderful words of warning must Suzanne have placed in the local newsletter then? All sites produced average species counts and all but Stansfield and Threlkeld produced new species for their respective lists. The value of carrying out Winter surveys was proven today with the encounter of a mixed-foraging flock at Carey Bay Wetland and a flock of Brownheaded Honeyeaters observed gleaning leaves within the West Ridge Central site. Both examples are typical winter activities for small bush birds and clearly demonstrates the value of this bushland’s food resources for far-ranging foraging behaviour. A tabulation of the most recorded species (at least 50% recording rate) for each site shows some interesting results. Further surveys will change this layout and it will be of interest to compare results from each subsequent year. No deep analysis should be attempted at this stage of course but a couple of examples rate a mention. Species
Rock Dove Spotted Dove Crested Pigeon Little Pied Cormorant Silver Gull Galah Little Corella Sulphurcrested Cockatoo Rainbow Lorikeet Australian King Parrot Eastern Rosella Eastern Koel
Finch The species seen frequently at all sites are the noisy and aggressive Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner, Grey Butcherbird and Australian Magpie typical of much of our urban reserves. It appears that two other aggressive species are trending to the south (Australian Raven) and the north (Laughing Kookaburra) but this may be an aberration of our currently small dataset. Small bush birds are currently most frequently recorded at Carey Bay Wetlands and the ridge sites at Stansfield and West Ridge. It would be no surprise to learn that these sites currently have the most species rich vegetation and strongest ecosystems.
