Topic 3 ­ Cloud Formation and Precipitation

There are three ways in which clouds can form; all involve warm,  moist air rising, cooling, and condensing.

1. 

Convective clouds ­  begins near a warm surface (oceans, lakes, etc) ­  warm, moist air rises , cools and condenses into a cloud

Really needs outcomes and pictures of all clouds.

2. 

Orographic Clouds ­ warm, moist air rises up the side of a mountain, cools,  and condenses. include diagram

Frontal Clouds ­ a front is the leading edge of an air mass ­ as the warm air meets a cold front it rises up, like snow on  a snowplow. ­ as it rises it cools, condenses, and forms a cloud.

4. 

Fog ­  Fog is actually a cloud which forms near the ground. ­ We need warm air, and some way to cool it down. i.  ii. iii. iv. 

warm ocean ­> cool land warm current ­ > cool current ocean air ­> snow or ice on clear nights, the ground cools faster, causing fog.

Clouds are named based on shape and altitude Shape Cumulus clouds are billowing, rounded clouds which grow vertically  and may indicate changing weather.

Stratus Clouds are long flat clouds which grow horizontally  and usually indicate stable weather.

"Special" Cloud Names Cirrus Clouds mostly made of ice crystals ­ very high altitude ­ looks like horses tails ­ Cumulonimbus nimbus means rain­bearing ­ large, dark thunderclouds ­ huge.  Scary. ­
