Dear Parents and Caregivers

Thank you so much to the St Mary’s community for your warm welcome. Monday morning was a lovely ceremony and it is great to be meeting lots of you around the place. I’d like to thank Eleanor and the staff for holding the fort in term three and all of you for your patience in the gap between Tim leaving and me arriving. I’m a strong believer in the power of team work so I’m looking forward to working with students, staff and parents to help these children be the best they can possibly be. The school vision talks about Inspired, Resilient, Inquiring, Global learners who are led by the Spirit so these statements will guide the decisions we make about what we do at school and how we do things. It’s a challenge for schools to get the right balance of teaching and learning that helps students achieve the national standards and the school curriculum and then the extra fun things that inspire passion and motivation in the learners so we will always strive to get the best possible combination of these for the children.

Aroha Respect Integrity Excellence I am committed to keeping costs down as much as possible so will always consider the financial implications for families when making decisions. When things go wrong for kids (as they will!) I expect them to use their WITS and this is something we will work on at school - walk away, ignore, talk to the person, seek help. This helps them deal with small problems themselves and is very empowering.

The lessons in Life Education next week will reinforce this with Kirsty and Harold talking to the students about reacting and responding. Enjoy the long weekend and I hope to meet lots of you at Pet Day.
