Welcome to the 1992-93 Rossville High School yearbook! Who would've ever thought that a small town high school could be so exciting? The fall season started it all off with a big bang. Boy, did we ever! The Class of 1993 started their Senior year with great excitement getting ready for the BIG finish. The fall sports teams kept the excitement going with them all having very successful seasons. Our Lady Dawg volleyball team finished the season as runner-up in sub-state, our Dawg football team brought home a very respectful 2nd place trophy in 3A and J.J. Wanamaker led the cross-country team and made state. Our girls golf team was very young but they should be very successful in the future. Some other exciting events this fall were the presentation of "South Pacific"; and congratulations to the 1992 Homecoming King and Queen Jason Broaddus and Beth Bush and to the other candidates. These are just some of the happenings at RHS "through the year .... "
ll
Dawgs Take It Step By Step. The 1992-93 Dawg football team was the best ever' Being only the 3rd Dawg team to make it to sub-state and the first to make it to state, the Bulldogs made RHS and the whole community proud. But nobody, especially the football players and coaches. can say it was an easy road to trave l. They had to take it one game at a time, step by step to be the very best STEP I Summer weightlifting and conditioning to build st rength and endurance. The guys had a choice to come at 6:00 am or 6:00 pm to lift . usually spending abo ut two a nd a half hours with Coach Luedtke. They worked as hard as possible: as we all know much harder than anybody around here . STEP 2 ~Days. The first three days with no pads are mainly going through plays without hard hitting plus some conditioning. Then on the fourt h day they suit up in full pads and they go at it. Hitting hard and running through the plays full speed. 2-A-Days a re designed to get a good amount of practices in before the fir st game. STEP 3 The games begin . Our Dawgs hit with all their might and zoom into the end zone to put them in the lead. They went through six non-district games untouchable. STEP 4 Di st rict play begins. The most important games of the regular season. The games that will determine who goes on to the playoffs and who turns in their equipment. Of course, the unstoppable Dawgs make it through districts with no blemishes, beating Rock Creek, 13-12 St. Marys, 54-22 and Silver Lake, 34-7, ma king them Di strict C hamps. They finished the regular season with an undefeated record, 9-0 1 STEP 5 ---pc;s(scason playoffs. In the hi-di strict game the Dawgs traveled to Herington where they took out the ChaoC haos (I mean the Railers), no quest ions asked, 28-7. Then our Dawg team played what some called the most important game of the season aga inst number one ra nked Nemaha Valley. Even though the Dawgs got a little scare from the Raiders it still didn't phase them. The guys pulled it out with a last minute field goal kick to put the Dawgs up 15-13 and then to go on and win the game making them Regiona l Champs. Then the Dawgs were off to sub-s tate. With their game sc heduled for Friday the 13th the Dawgs had no suspicions but maybe Erie did, or it cou ld ' ve been their long trip to Rossville. Erie changed the game to Saturday the 14th. But it didn ' t have a ny effect on the Dawgs because they came out of the game on top , beating the Red Devils 35-6 to be one of the two best teams in 3A. STEP 6 ST A TE 1 The '92 Dawgs were the first Rossville football team to make it to state. Making history the Dawgs of 1992 a rc living legends. The players and coaches went into the game with a lot of things and people against them, but they went to Wichita with their heads up high and ready to play. Although they didn ' t bring the championship trophy home , no one in Rossville could've been any prouder of the Dawgs. The guys played a great game, and have absolutely nothing to han g their hea ds about. The community backed them all the way and has a great deal of pride in their Dawg football tea m. Congratulations to the 1992 Rossv ille Bulldog football team for having a terrific and successful season. Be proud of yo urselves for the great things you've accom plished'

A Talk With The Head Foote Why did you start coaching? I've wanted to coach since high school. I like working with young people, and coaching lets me do that. How would you compare this year's team to last year's? The difference is like night and day. This year's squad has more speed, ability, and enthusiasm: they've got a lot more done. Did you ever get mad at the players during games? Sure, but I'm really mad about what they did not at them. Is there anything you don't like about coaching? Yes! All the paperwork.

Only The Lonely The cross country team was very successful this year. All of the runners had their best time: J.J. Wanamaker with 16:45; Doug Reser with 18:50 and Lewis Kelley with 19:47. Wanamaker places 2nd in Regionals and 21st at state. All the runners enjoyed cross country and plan to go out for cross country next year to improve their times or to do better as a team. The Rossville cross country team was combined with St. Marys. They felt this was an advantage for them so they can get more team medals.
Reser had a good year this year and plans to go out next year to improve his time.

"South Pacific" - Get Away From It All On A Peaceful Island It took a lot of time and effort to make the play the success it was. At times things were rough. There were also some funny moments to the play. Preparing for the play was <:1 hard job. Some students had to memorize several lines. Others had to learn songs and choreograph dances. Some students even had to learn French . Even the stage crew had to learn when to change elements of the stage, such as the scenery and lights. Shawn Rafferty played the part of Emil Dabeck. Brandi Bush was cast as the nurse Nellie. Jamie Flerlage played Lieutenant Cable. Brenda Baker played Bloody Mary. Adam Sumner was Billis. There were many other students involved in the play and all of them did an excellent job. The funniest part of the play was when Adam dressed up like a woman and did a dance . Mr. Goolsby led the cast through three great performances.

Not Just Arguing ... Debate Students Learn About The World Of Politics What is Debate? In a debate round there are two teams. One is the affirmative . The affirmative team presents a plan to do what the resolution calls for. The negative tries to defeat the plan . Each team has two people and each person gives two speeches and uses quotes from experts to prove what they say is true. This year's resolution is "should the United States Government reduce worldwide pollution through its trade and or aid policies." There are five stock issues : significance, harms, inherency, topicality, and solvency. If the negative wins any one stock issue they win the debate. If the harms are not significant then there is no need to change them and no reason to adopt the plan. If the plan only makes a minor change in current policy then it is a minor repair and the affirmative loses inherency. Inherency means that the problem is already corrected without the plan . The entire affirmative case must fall within the area specified by the resolution . If it doesn't then the affirmative is either untopical or extratopical. A person on the debate team must spend a lot of time finding evidence to use. A debater needs evidence to prove or disprove harms, advantages, and solvency.

Winter came upon us at RHS! Along with all the snow and freezing rain we got during the cold winter months, came some very exciting events at the Dawg House. The junior class kept themselves busy by selling candy bars and magazines to pay for the Junior-Senior Prom that would come in the spring. Just as the fall sports, the winter sports kept the Dawg fans on the edges of their seats, watching some of the most exciting basketball games and wrestling matches yet. The girls did themselves proud by having one of the most successful basketball seasons in many years. The Lady Dawgs finished their season with the semi-final sub-state game with a loss to number 2 and sub-state champ Marais des Cygnes. They ended their season with a 10-12 record. The boys had a terrific season ending with a 15-7 record. Some of their greatest accomplishments came with a 2pt win over 3A ranked Rock Creek and ending their season with a loss to number 2 and sub-state champ Valley Falls by only four. Off the court and on the mat the wrestlers did fantastic taking 5 of 8 guys to state. Jason Bell won the 3-2-1A title at 130 lbs. Also congratulations to the Winter Sports King and Queen Daren Badura and Brooke Musch and to the other candidates. As the season went on the winter music concerts brightened up the atmosphere with beautiful music; the band, vocal music and New Image performed. You Can't Learn It all From A Book
Students don't always have it easy in their classes. Often, Freshmen find classes much harder than those in grade school because the subjects are more in-depth and complicated. Students must often study harder before tests than they have been used to. Upperclassmen have learned to study harder, but for a Freshman in their first year of harder classes, it becomes a high priority to be able to absorb more information.
Right: Amy Dohrman shows off the Betsy Rose costume she used in her Historical Update for Mr. Keller's Sophomore World Affairs class. The students had to make a "commercial" about a famous person. The presentation was videotaped, and the students had to provide their own props to make it more realistic. The one twist, though, was that the students had to dress up as someone from the present or very recent past. This gives students a unique way of learning about a complicated subject.

Danny Monhollon and Jake Williams take notes from their books.
Freshmen must usually make the biggest adjustments at the beginning of the year. They are faced with new classes that are sometimes very confusing. The Freshmen Science classes have been doing many new things this year; for instance, they studied basic physics by making paper airplanes of different designs and testing them. The class takes more in-depth studying and effort in general than grade school science, and the students must make the adjustments in their habits to max1m1ze study skills.
Sophomore Biology students have participated in several labs this year. Working firsthand with projects often gives students a better understanding of what they are studying. Often, being able to compare an animal with oneself allows greater understanding of how the animal lives.
Mrs. Willits's Biology class dissects starfish in their studies about invertemior Dan Sage work animals. "If I had my preference, I would teach almost exclusively with labs, !there is so much to cover, we wouldn't be able to study everything," says Mrs. ss. illits.

"Going to Yo-Tech was a new opportunity, but with the class I took, I didn't like it all that much. I think Yo-Tech gave me a little bit too much freedom, in my opinion," said Josh Swanson. "Don't get me wrong, Yo-Tech is cool, if you have a cool class with a cool teacher. I messed around and ended up almost not passing. Partly because I didn't like my teacher and the class didn't interest me. I think for those people who will study and actually show up to class, Yo-Tech is a good choice."

For two years the band has asked Mr. Brown and the School Board for new band uniforms. But it was never in the budget. Finally this year they gave us the okay. The uniforms cost about three hundred dollars a piece. Mr. Brown started the process of getting the uniforms last May. This process normally takes at least one school year but they got it done over the summer. The uniforms ended up costing about $30,000 between both schools.
Even during the Musical the band was busy helping out with the play. Those members that were not participating in the acting parts of the play but devoted their spare time to the orchestra are: Micheal Beasterfield, Chris Gordon, Ryan Wilt, Carrie Reamer, Eric Dannefer, Beth Donneley, and Cindy Rezac . There were several people from surrounding communities that came in and helped out. They were: Mike Segal (Topeka), Scott Bradley (Topeka), Gregg Walker (Band Director), Dianne Budden (St. Marys), Warren Sickle (St. Marys), Chris St. John (Topeka), and Sandy Wichman (Rossville).

A Yearly Perspective Chris Houck
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------One of the largest investments made by sophomores is class rings. The reasons for buying rings vary greatly, but most students consider them to be a symbol of the school, as well as a cool thing to wear. The choices available are seemingly endless. There are many different styles, stones, and markings to choose from. Some choose 10 or 14 kt. gold; others, imitation gold or silver-colored metal. Prices vary accordingly. Depending on choice of metal and stone, rings can cost from $70 to over $300. If they are cared for properly, however, the rings will last for a lifetime and provide a welcome reminder to days gone by.
There's nothing boring about school! With everything from classes, to sports, to our friends, we're always doing something different (or weird, if you want to get technical).
k
Spring came upon us with a thunderous entrance (literally). With it, it brought a storm of activities at RHS. Outside the weather was nasty with thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods, making it almost impossible to stay shiny and happy, but somehow most of us managed to keep smiles on our faces. The smiles dimmed quickly for the athletes in spring sports, because it seemed that they were doing all that practicing for nothing. The weather was playing a big part in their season, because all the spring sports are played outdoors. Rain storms and flooded fields were the cause of many postponed and canceled games. They even went to such lengths as playing "home" games at St. Marys! But even with all those time and schedule changes the spring athletes were still successful. The baseball and softball teams both had good seasons. The track team was also very successful, with many athletes breaking records, and in sophomore Marsha Rezac's case, rebreaking records. The boys' golf team also had to fight mother nature but still managed to come up with some good placings at tournaments. Also in spring was the Junior-Senior Prom. The juniors did a great job, working extremely hard to put on a terrific prom and they succeeded. The rain came down outside and the thunder sounded but no one cared because there was a party going on inside. If you wanted to see really happy people, all you had to do was walk down the senior hallway, because along with the bad weather spring also brings around graduation, which helped in keeping the seniors smiling. With the end of high school for the Seniors it also brings the end of the infamous freshman year for the rookies. They made it through with flying colors. Well the school year is over, finally. It took some patience and work but we did it. Through the good and bad times, the fun and the boring times, it took us some time but we finally made it "through the year." For some it went too fast and for others too slow. But through it all it made us stronger and ready to take on new challenges. Good luck to everyone from the outgoing seniors to the incoming freshmen . May your days be filled with wonderful memories that you can hold on to "through the years."

Baseball this year wasn't as fun as last year. We've only played about 2/3 of the games that we were supposed to, and practices are almost always held inside. I don't know about you but I always thought baseball was played outside. When the field was too wet, and Mr. Keller wanted to go outside anyway, we would take defensive practice on the parking lot. It's kind of strange taking ground balls off asphalt. The · ball moves faster than off dirt, and funny hops are bound to happen. Even though practices were held inside and we didn't get many games in, I think we've become a fairly good team. -Dan Bird

Golf as a Freshman is very nerve-racking. Even though I am younger than anyone on the team, they expect me to do well. In the first tournament I was second man, right behind Jason Perine. The first hole, I looked down the long narrow fairway, gripped my club with my sweaty palms and took a swing. I sliced the first drive and never recovered. I ended up getting four over par on the first hole. After the first meet I was placed as third man and Michael Bell was second. I performed better and better as I played in more tournaments and I ended up getting sixth at Northern Height and third at league. My freshman year has been good. I expect to do better in my future years. - Jason Keller
Our golf team this year was one of Rossville's best ever, although we were well short of state. We started the year off the way we wanted by placing second at Wamego. But I and the rest of the team failed to bring individual medals. That would turn out to be the last time that would happen. From there on out the year went great. Throughout the year all six varsity golfers managed to bring home an individual medal. That's

It's All Part Of The Game This year's softball season was anything but outdoorsy. When a person goes through an entire year of sports inside, like volleyball and basketball, they are ready to get outside in the warm, spring weather to have some fun. But this was not the case for the ' softball team of 1993. This is no joke. At least three fourths of our practices were inside the gym, mainly on the small side. We were crammed in there trying pi The girls watch their teammates on the field . to simulate a softball diamond. That was kind of a joke considering that the room we had to practice on was not even 20% the size of a real ball field. But we made do. We worked hard all season just hoping to have a game (many of them were canceled) . With no pitching machine, since ours burned out after a week of practice, our pitchers had to give batting practice to everyone. Thank God we had more pitchers this year. The season seemed longer than usual, but we tried to have as much fun as we could. With Coach Hamilton stealing people's gloves and Amy Dohrman trying to see how many people she could hit in one week, we always had a good time, inside or out! Rossville' forensics squad has done very well this year, especially considering its small size. It placed sixth at both Holton and Hayden. It also placed fourth at Royal Valley, second at Osage City, and first at the league tournament. It has been successful with only 12 members. In these tournaments several members have qualified for state. Bev Baker, Brenda Baker, Shawn Rafferty, Brandon Macha, Nathan Freeby, Larry Bowers, Dan Bauer, Brandy Scheidegger, Tobi Terry, Claudia Donovan, Teresa Gentry, and Pete Rafferty have all contributed to the teams success. The team success would not have been possible without the expertise of the coach, Mr. Goolsby. Mr. Goolsby has played a very important role in making the forensics program what it is today.
Rossville's Forensics team placed fourth in the 2A state tournament. Bev Baker placed second in both prose and oratory. Brenda Baker and Larry Bowers placed second in duet acting. Brandon

"Being a freshman is a good experience. You have to be responsible for getting your homework done and being eligible for sports. High school is fun; you get to do a lot more stuff ... activities such as basketball games and many more exciting events. The hardest part of being new in a school is trying to find classes and meeting new teachers, but now that we are more confident and relaxed, we find it is not as hard as we thought it would be." -Danny Monhollon

RHS Students Enjoy A Variety Of Hobbies And Activities Outside Of School.
Many students at Rossville High like going hunting. Most Rossville students like bird hunting. Michael Guyle's favorite animal to hunt is antelope because it is out-of-state and stalking it is challenge. Guyle claims, "The best places to hunt in Kansas are any woody areas with a lot of tall grass." He also shared these hunting secrets: when hunting pleasant and quail, you should put your foot in their droppings to see if they are fresh, and hunt deer after it rains or snows so you can see their tracks." He also said, "The best time to hunt pheasant and quail is after 9:00A.M. and deer from morning until 10:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. until dark." -Nathan Freeby

. Many students from RHS like fishing. Like all fisherman, they love the challenge of reeling in the big fish. Many people like to catch bass. J.R. Booth likes fishing in farm ponds. His favorite kind of bait is artificial lures. "The best times for fishing are in the morning and in the evening." J.R. Said. J.R.'s secret to fishing is knowing where to cast. -Nathan Freeby
J.R. Booth casts his line into a pond. J.R. loves to catch big fish.
Wargames can be exc1t1ng. They require a mastery of strategy. Wargames can be found on computers, board games, and can even be played by mail. The wargame most people play is Risk. Beyond that they get more complicated, more fun, and are often difficult to learn. There are many wargames available which differ greatly in time periods, situations, complexity, number of players and amount of time to play. Julia likes to Nathan and Justin show the map to Hyborian war. They like all types of wargames.
Wheels Having a car in high school is one of the most important things to some people. One's transportation can either make or break a person. Everyone seems to have their own idea of what the perfect ride is. Some dream of a shiny sports car while others long for a truck. Some even like those family cars. Others don't even care what their car or truck looks like as long as it has a good stereo, but usually a sweet sounding system and a good looking car come as a package deal. Here at RHS we have many people with many different vehicles. As a matter of fact some of those people' are even known for their cars. We all know the little white Chevy SlO that makes the big boom; we've all seen the big maroon beast with the yellow stripe and the sound of Metallica blasting from it. Then there's the all famous Scout-you know, the old beat-up blue thing that only goes 50 mph at tops. You've all seen the red Camaro coming down the street, well, that is when it actually runs. Even the mayor of Rossville has a car that distinguishes him from the rest of the crowd. A lot of the time a person's personality will just fit their vehicle and because many days and nights are spent in those cars, they will always have a special place in our hearts. Then again maybe not.
