Asteroids • asteroids are large pieces of rock/metal that orbit the sun • they vary in size (diameters range from 10 m to 100's of km) • most asteroids exist in the Asteroid Belt (located between Mars and Jupiter) • asteroids can be a deadly threat explain: • they could also be a valuable resource explain:

Meteors • meteors are small pieces of rock/metal that move quickly through space • the sizes vary (from a grain of sand up to 10 m) • meteors hit Earth fairly often • most of them burn up as they pass through Earth's atmosphere (seen as a "shooting" or "falling" star) • larger meteors don't burn up completely and hit the Earth's surface (called meteorites)

Comets • a comet is a large piece of frozen gas and dust (a "dirty iceball") • comets travel in huge, elongated orbits around the sun • the head (coma) of a comet is small (usually less than 10 km) • however, the tail of a comet can be 100's of millions of km long! • the tail is only produced when the comet gets close to the sun explain:
Halley's Comet (1986)
Comet HaleBopp (1997)
