Mr. Webb-A Featured Teacher!

You may know Mr. Webb as a Star Wars loving fan and a funny U.S. History teacher, but now he has been elected as one of our Featured Teachers. You may also know him for his voice impressions and his occasional singing of Disney songs. When you walk into room 37, in the corner you will see a Darth Vader poster and many Star Wars knick-knacks, which you can obviously tell is Mr. Webb’s desk corner. We held an interview with him and here is what we found out. He has taught one subject for his whole teaching career because he loves it so much, and that is U.S. History. Mr. Webb has been teaching for roughly 13 years. Mr. Webb has switched schools from Sequoya to Sagamore. Mr. Webb said that it was a pleasure to work with the new staff in Sagamore while continuing to work some of his colleagues from Sequoya.

On our website we asked you guys what your favorite book is. We received many answers, but our book that most people voted for is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. This fictional book has many amazing stories about a boy named Harry Potter. You guys probably know about this book. It was released in 1997, and none of us students had been born yet, but we probably all have heard of the books series in one way or another.

Featured Teachers! Mr. Berman - A Teacher and a Friend By Madeline Erickson, Alessandra DiMaria, and Erica Larcombe

Mr Berman is definitely a special teacher here at Sagamore. When the polls came in for the featured teacher, Mr. Berman had an overwhelming amount of votes. He is funny, kind-hearted, creative and is a great role model. Mr. Berman has been teacher for 17 years. He began teaching at Sagamore in 2013. The reason he became a teacher was because he loves “hanging out with kids and helping someone to succeed.” Mr. Berman is always looking to help someone be their best. He has taught different grades such as 3rd, 4th, and 6th. Mr.Berman has always enjoyed math. “Math was, and still is, my favorite subject.” Mr.Berman's hobbies include playing board games, bike riding, and playing with his daughters. He does not have a pet, although he did have a dog at one point. Mr.Berman's favorite quote is “you gotta believe… in the NY Mets.” His favorite food is sushi. Mr. Berman is an amazing teacher and the students and staff here at Sagamore are extremely lucky to be able to work with him. In his four years at Sagamore he has helped many students excel in middle school.

Meet Our Helpful Librarian By Alessandra DiMaria and Madeline Erickson Our fantastic Sagamore school librarian, Mrs. Bucher, was kind enough to allow us to interview her for the Author and Artists newspaper. She was chosen to be one of our featured teachers for the first edition of the paper. Mrs. Bucher told us about her past experience as a librarian and teacher. In 2001 she began her Sachem teaching career at Nokomis Elementary School. When asked her favorite part about her job she replied, “I get to combine kids, technology, and books...it's the perfect combination.” We also asked what her favorite grade level to teach, and she said, “Middle school is the perfect grade to work with. Unlike elementary school students who don’t follow directions.” Mrs. Bucher loves her job. Once Mr. Bucher said to her, “You love your job so much, you would work for nothing,” and Mrs. Bucher completely agrees. Mrs. Bucher has twin girls, Tory and Jessie, age 30. She also has two dogs, one named Sydney and the other named Al. “I always keep my books away from them so they don't eat them,” she said. When we interviewed Mrs. Bucher we found out that she has a wide variety of favorite books. “I couldn’t choose just one,” she replied. However she does have favorite genres such as historical fiction and fantasy fiction. Her hobbies include reading and gardening. Mrs. Bucher is a fantastic librarian and an amazing teacher. Sagamore is lucky to have such a wonderful staff member working with students and staff.

This year we will be performing “High School Musical 2 Jr!” under the leadership of the amazingly talented Ms. Kolodny. The showcase will soon be updated with our cast photos and roles. Don’t forget to come see our performance on March 3rd and 4th! The cast has been working extremely hard and hopes to see you at the show!

This awesome club is run by Mr. Giglio, one of the school’s chorus teachers. This club allows those who love to sing to show off their talent during the Select Concert in the spring. They are currently working on their songs for the spring concert. One of the songs is a Les Miserables medley. They are having a lot of fun and working extremely hard.

In the Anime and Sci-Fi Club, the advisor is Mr. Berger. Every Monday we meet in the Little Theater to watch a movie. Mr. Berger is amazing and funny, and he always chooses the best movies to watch. It is a great opportunity to make new friends and see movies you thought you’d never see. We all love anime and are glad to have a club for it.

Student Government is a club that gets students involved in the school community. This club comes up with fun and exciting events for our school, like Safe Halloween, the Ice Cream Social, and Sagamore Day. They organize the school’s snack shack and bagel breakfasts. This group also organizes our awesome Sagamore dances and other events! They are even planning a talent show for April! By joining Student Government you can share ways to improve the Sagamore Middle School experience for your peers. The class officers start us off each day with morning announcements The advisors, Mrs. Sorrentino and Mr. Parkinson, understand middle school students and they make sure each year is special.

Artists & Authors is a club for expressing your love for drawing and writing. Mrs.Gennosa is the advisor of this club, she loves to meet talented students in different grades. She was fortunate that her student teacher, Mr. John Cann, could help to direct and edit this edition of The Sagamore News. As a member of the Authors and Artists Club, you can publish your work in our seasonal school newspaper. You can also our writing and drawing contest as part of the club. Contest entries are due on Monday, April 3rd.

SLAM Math Olympiad

Mr. Lacetera runs a great Art Club to allow us to express our creativity through art! It is fun to make art while spending time with friends. Alyssa Monteleone said, “In Art Club Mr. Lacetera has many fun projects. I love spending time with my friends while doing my favorite hobby.”

SLAM is a fun way to exercise your mind with math questions you would have never thought of. It’s also a fun way to hang out with friends. SLAM is awesome for challenging yourself and achieving higher math skills. SLAM is run by two amazing teachers, Mr. Berman and Mrs. Scaturro. It is held in the cafeteria where we work on our score cards. Then at the end of the year, whoever has the most points will get a prize. So come on down, it’s not too late to join SLAM.

The Yearbook Club is a great club for organizing the memories collected throughout the year. They made flyers for the yearbook cover, and the winners were Lynnmerie Lin and Siobhan Meyer. Mrs. Hagan, the advisor, recently had a baby, so we worked hard to get most of the work done before she left.

Being in the Drama Club is an excellent and enjoyable experience, but there is more than just being on stage. I’m talking about the Stage Crew role of the show. Taking care of props, curtains, hair, makeup, and the needs of the rest of the crew are equally as important as the leads. They are responsible for backgrounds and the visual half of the performance. Ms. Kolodny and Mrs. Petrelli are the amazing advisors. Everyone interested should audition for Stage Crew or Drama in general. You won’t ever regret your decision!

Middle School Advice Dear Libby, Next year I am looking forward to have the ability to take more advanced classes but I’m not sure that I will be able to handle the work or keep up with the needed studying. What should I do?

When you are taking an honors class, you are held to a higher standard. I will always say if you have the grades to take the class, go for it. Set goals to help maintain how much you study. As you are consistently reaching the goals you set, start setting higher goals. Remember that even if the class becomes too much of a challenge, you can drop it and head back to a class that is more manageable for you. Taking an honors class is quite rewarding, but only if you are able to handle it. If you don’t give yourself the chance to try it, you will probably always wonder, “Could I have made it?” I encourage all to try and reach for the stars.

Dear Libby, I am having problems with bullies. They won’t leave me alone and it’s getting me quite upset. My friends are standing up for me and I don’t want them to get hurt. Please I need help. One thing you need to know about bullies is that they feed on your pain. To start, you must not let them bother you. If you show them that they are hurting you, they will only get emboldened and hurt you more. Simply let their hurtful comments roll off your back and try to think nothing of it . Most likely they are hurting for their own reasons and are taking their pain out on you. No matter what another person says to you, remember you are amazing in every way. Even if you're hurting, your friends will be there. Others will understand your pain and will help to make you feel better. Of course if you can’t end things and fix the problem yourself, you can always tell a trusted adult and they will try to fix the problem. The best thing is to put a smile on your face and everything won’t be so bad.

Dear Libby, There is something going on between me and my friends and our relationship is growing apart. What do I do? My advice to you is try to bond with them. You could invite them to hang out after school or even play some sort of bonding game. Start a conversation. Tell them about what is going on in your life and ask about theirs. You need to be a good friend in order to have good friends. If you continue to drift apart, this is very normal in middle school. People change friend groups a lot in middle school. You may drift away for a while and then drift back again. Try not to resent a friend who has chosen a new group. It is normal and you need to let your friends discover who they are.

The Fall season brought many teams and many wins for Sagamore Middle School. The Girls Field Hockey team won the Sportsmanship Award for the wonderful game play and interaction with other teams, along with a winning record. Cross Country consisted of more than 40 members and they won multiple events from many people. The football team’s coach, Mr Murphy, told them to “play smart,” and that's exactly what they did. They went 4-2-1 and two players, Brian Johnston and Joe Glasson, also received awards. Thank you to all who participated in fall sports.

Cross Country

By James McPartland and Yousuf Suleman Cross Country was a very enjoyable sport. We loved running across the perimeter of the field. We also enjoyed all of the activities and games that helped us improve our running skills. The coach, Mrs. Dow, was awesome and really helped everyone else on the team to get faster. It was an amazing season and we can’t wait to go back next fall.

Girls Soccer By Anthony Amesti The Girls Soccer team left the fields with a 10-0 record, making them a powerful undefeated team. They only let up three goals the entire season. Congratulations to all who played and showed your Sachem Pride wearing our school's colors.

By Michaela Barresi, Summer Potvin and Erica Urbancik We had a lot of fun playing soccer with our coach Dr. Dohrman, who helped us with whatever we needed and encouraged us to try We were undefeated the whole season and were very proud of ourselves. We learned new skills and really enjoyed working together with the 8th graders. They were caring and always looked out for us.

The soccer teams enjoyed their experiences and dominated their turfs. The Boys team went a record of 1-8-1 by the end of their fall season. The captains of the team were Jack Murphy, Ryan Henzel and Kevin Capellini. “Well it was like one big family. We were all able to joke around with each other and we always had our teammates backs no matter what. I had a lot of fun when I played with my brothers,” said Luke Mangan, who was a goaltender who scored a goal and made around thirty saves on the season. Most important was the teamwork shown. Antonio Almeida said, “We enjoyed playing together and everyone was friendly and had good chemistry. We worked together well.” Kyle Wilkins said, “Mr. Torquato was an amazing coach who understood the players very well. He knew how to get our spirits up, and how to get us back in the game.”

Sagamore Sports Sagamore Arrowettes By Olivia Schiano and Juliana Russo The Arrowettes dance at basketball games and goes to competitions. They practice Jazz, kickline, and hip-hop. The amazing coach is Marissa. We like being on the team because we get to be with our friends and do what we love, which is dance. The captain is Juliana Russo. The team practices every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Juliana says, “It is an amazing feeling going on stage with your best friends and dancing for your friends and family.”

Cheerleading

By Meghan March, Chelsey Weber, Makayla Smith and Jamie Levin. During the fall and early winter seasons, there were 25 cheerleaders cheering everyone on. The coach, Courtney Schroeder, led the girls to success with their two competitions. The cheerleaders are a very talented group that always puts on a great performance for the crowd. The coach always said, “It’s not about being the best, it’s about being better than you were yesterday. Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.”

The luck Sagamore had with sports this fall kept rolling with Winter sports. The Boy’s basketball team had an amazing season and had an impressive record of 9-1. The Girls Volleyball team finished their last game with an outstanding record of 10-0.

Boys Basketball By Will Lin and Conor Vanella The Sagamore Boys Basketball Team had an amazing season this year and everything went well. Coach Dorman was one of the best coaches in basketball we had ever worked with. It was a great basketball season and we all had fun working together. Coach Dorman knew the players and the game of basketball very well. He made us work hard and in the end it payed off with us beating almost every team by 20-30 points! In the end we loved staying after school every day and playing the game with all of our teammates. We had a great season.

The Girls Volleyball team went 10-0, an undefeated season! Our coaches, Coach Capo and Coach Katz, did a great job. They also coach Girls Volleyball at Sachem East. It was so much fun playing with my friends. Practice was always the best, especially when Coach Katz would tell funny stories about her son. She would encourage us with quotes like,“Pretend you're in the jungle, and you are a lion, while the other team is a broken legged lamb,” which enabled some girls to go above and beyond, leading to a win for Sagamore. Our Girls Volleyball team was one of the best in Sagamore history. We can’t wait for next year to have another great season. Student Government Events! Safe Halloween By: Madeline Erickson, Erica Larcombe, and Alessandra DiMaria Sagamore’s 2016 Safe Halloween was a huge success. Young Sachem students had a fantastic time getting dressed up and trick-or-treating in a safe environment. Children played creative and fun-filled games invented by the students here at Sagamore. This was beneficial to the Sagamore students because it allowed them to be creative and work with their peers to do something for the community. While helping, students got to experience all that wonderful about Safe Halloween. They saw smiles on all of the kids’ faces. There were many enjoyable games such as pin the hat on the witch, bowling, flip the bottle, tic-tac-toe, and many more intriguing activities. Kids wore all types of costumes varying from Minnie Mouse to zombies. By the time they left, the children were all on a sugar high after all of the candy they consumed. Even though the hallways were packed, everyone who participated had a great time. Safe Halloween was an exciting event that kids of all ages enjoyed. We are lucky to be part of a district that hosts this awesome event!

Ice Cream Social

By: Ántonia Pavek, Alyssa Gibali, Nikita Karnik and Emily Pressman The Ice Cream Social was an enjoyable time for all grades! This Student Government organized event was an amazing way for friends to reunite and to make new friends. This social, sugary event was to celebrate the joining of Sequoya and Sagamore. It was held on two separate days, one day for the 6th graders and another for the 7th and 8th graders. The principal, assistant principal and many of the teachers served the students their delectable and delicious ice cream and yummy toppings. Jake Auricchio enthusiastically exclaimed, “I mean it’s ice cream! Who doesn’t love ice cream?” The Ice Cream Social was a unique, annual event to chat, eat ice cream and have fun after school! You selected either vanilla or chocolate, or both! Also, a bounty of toppings were there, as well! The best part was that the event had a great turn out! This year, more than 100 students attended. Next year, we hope that even more students will attend! Laughter filled the air as people enjoyed their ice cream. This event was the perfect time for socialization and a time for special memories to be made. In conclusion, the Ice Cream Social was a wonderful and fun time for everyone!

Living Voices Assembly! By: Erica Larcombe, Joanna Philip and Lily Hammond

He said, “It will be like nothing like you’ve seen before,” and he was right. On January 4, 2017, Brian Anthony Simmons, a member of the Living Voices acting group, came to Sagamore Middle School. He was a phenomenal performer and he informed the entire seventh grade about the American Revolution using a slideshow and his acting skills. He played a slideshow full of clips and pictures, and acted the story that was in the slideshow. He used humor and actual facts. Madeline Erickson stated, “He was very informative and was a fantastic actor.” Indeed he was; Mr. Simmons informed us about what an average African American’s life would have been during the Revolutionary War, with his main character Peter Freeman. Bobby Galasso stated, “I liked how it was a one-man show.” The students thought that it was almost impossible to memorize a 40 minute script in three months, but Mr. Simmons did it skillfully. This show was very amusing to watch and we learned many facts about the Revolutionary War.

Students Had A Blast With Author Gordon Korman By: Joanna Philip and Lily Hammond

In early October, students who participated in the Stop The Summer Slide Program and the Sachem Public Library Reading Club had a chance to meet with the well known author Gordon Korman. These students enjoyed lunch with Korman and learned interesting facts about him. He also answered questions about himself and his books including his Swindle, Ungifted, and Hypnotists series, as well as many more adventures. The summer readers not only met with the author, but had a chance to buy his novels and have them signed. After the lunch, the students and the entire sixth grade listened to the author speak about how he started to write and when his new books will be out. Students like us learned that Gordon began his writing career when he was in seventh grade during an English assignment. He wrote the book, This Can’t Be Happening at Macdonald Hall, which was published during his freshman year in high school! The summer readers had a blast during their lunch with Gordon Korman!

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, its Superman! We took a poll and Superman is the winner. The Man of Steel was born on a alien planet called Krypton, and was originally named Kal-el. His parents knew about the near destruction of their planet and built a spacecraft to let him escape. He arrived on Earth and from there on out he protected Earth from all sorts of villains.

Hamilton is the new hit broadway musical about the life of America's founding father Alexander Hamilton. It incorporates rap and hip-hop to explain his life story and struggles. It’s written by Lin-Manuel Miranda who also wrote the off-broadway musical In The Heights. Hamilton was nominated for 16 Tonys and won 11 out of that. It was written down in history as being the most nominated musical of all time. It is a definite must see! So don’t throw away your shot at getting a ticket!

Computers are used daily as a source for accessing the Internet, formal assignments, entertainment, and much more. Windows, a widely known computer operating system, constantly updates in order to make using the computer faster and easier. Windows has evolved over the years from Windows to Windows 10 to satisfy the technological needs of everyone.

Virtual Reality (VR) is the next big step in technology. Now, people can be put into an entertaining 3D universe that resembles reality. VR’s have taken video gaming to a whole new level. However, they are still very expensive because of their unique entertainment and enhanced experience that others do not have to offer. As technology progresses, VRs become cheaper and will soon be an object in many children’s households.
