CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY

ROUND LAKE, NEW YORK

Saturday: February 8, 2014 4:00pm:

I would like to announce that I have appointed Jackie McDonough, formerly coordinator of Pastoral Care, to serve as Pastoral Associate of Parish Life. In this capacity, Jackie will assist me with coordinating the ordinary day-to-day pastoral, spiritual and administrative care of the parish. She will be assisting and coordinating the various ministries and activities in their planning, improving communications, recruiting and scheduling events. The Parish Life Associate works closely with other Parish staff and committees in the performance of this position. Her phone number remains the same, 877-8506, ext. 374. Shirley and Rob Pilch, who formerly coordinated our Baptism Ministry will be replacing Jackie as Coordinators of Pastoral Care. Their phone number will be 877-8506, ext. 302. I would like to thank them for their dedicated service to this ministry and know that their pastoral presence to those homebound, in nursing homes and hospitals will be deeply welcomed. This change necessitates that we continue our efforts to provide the excellence expected in our Baptism program. We will be holding a coordinating meeting this Sunday following the 10:30am Mass. All current members and those desiring to explore service in this ministry are warmly invited to attend. Peace and all good,

Fr. Jim

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR February 9, 2014

First Reading: Isaiah 58: 7-10 (73A) Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus said he came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He described such fulfillment as a matter not of legal argumentation but of holiness, reconciliation and the obedience of faith. Jesus encouraged the disciples to let their “Yes” mean “Yes” and their “No” mean “No”. Question for Adults: How are others salt and light to you? How are you seasoning and lighting their way? Question for Youth: to someone?

What good deeds can you do to bring Jesus

Jesus uses salt and light to describe qualities of disciples. Salt enhances but is thrown away and trampled if it becomes tasteless. Light shines but is ineffective if hidden. Disciples—as we all are—must season the world with God’s Word and faithfully shine forth God’s Presence. The choice is ours: to season or be discarded ...to shine or be hidden!

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK

First Reading: Sirach 15:15-20 (76A) Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:17-37 LIVING THE EUCHARIST The word “awe” has become largely replaced by the overused adjective, “awesome.” Webster’s Dictionary defines awe as “a mixed feeling of reverence, fear and wonder.” In contrast, “awesome” is defined as being “filled with awe.” How can you NOT be filled with awe when you receive the Holy Eucharist and hold YOUR CREATOR in your hands and take Him inside yourself? This Penitential Season, please step out of your comfort zone and take part in the parish’s second year of “Living the Eucharist” (LTE). Instead of “giving up” something this Lent, “give” to yourself the knowledge surrounding what is the core of the Catholic faith, the Eucharist. Learn for yourself what it means to be Catholic during this six-week exploration of the Lenten Gospel readings, which will begin the week of March 3 and conclude during Holy Week. Jesus said, COME AND SEE. You are invited to take advantage of this opportunity – COME AND EXPERIENCE the most important aspect of your Catholic faith. Make a commitment today to increase your faith by signing up to join an LTE small discussion group and undergo a reawakening of your spiritual life. There is no “wise old man” in each small group: all participants are there to learn, share, and experience. COME AND SEE. YOUTH MINISTRY Bottle Collections WE ARE NO LONGER COLLECTING BOTTLES AT CORPUS CHRISTI. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PAST SUPPORT IN OUR FUNDRAISING Helping to keep children safe on line There is a new website from USCCB for helping keep children and families safe online: www.faithandsafety.org. The website is a partnership with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and it is designed to be a place where families learn to see technology through the eyes of faith and stay safe online. The site offers guidance how to use the Internet, cell phones and video games safely, as well as protecting children’s privacy. We encourage you to check out this information and share it with your parishioners.

What to do with old Palms There are boxes in the gathering areas to collect your old palm branches. They will be burned and used with the ashes dispensed on Ash Wednesday, March 5th -- the beginning of our Lenten season. Let's all start a new beginning -- not to attend, not to simply participate, but to CELEBRATE every step of the way !! May you be blessed with the graces of our loving God. ~Judy Mullins, Prayer and Worship

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

February 9, 2014 KNIGHTS CORNER

A need has been expressed that a nursery during the 10:30 Mass for some families would be beneficial. To make this ministry become available we will be in need of at least eight adults & eight teens who be committed to giving of their time. Having enough people sign up would mean volunteering once a month. Please call: Jackie McDonough 877-8506 ext. 374 or there will be a sign up table in the hall where there is coffee & donuts. In an effort to continue to make Corpus Christi a very viable parish we are initiating a program to invite everyone to think and pray about how you can help keep this parish alive and welcoming. Our first step is to introduce you to the ministries that are currently active and in need of your assistance. We will be having a representative from each ministry, one every week, give you a little talk on their ministry after which we will invite you to come to the parish center for coffee & donuts. With Lent right around the corner, it is the perfect time of the year to say to ourselves, “ What can I do instead of what can or should I give up.” Our Lady of Lourdes Blessed Pope John Paul II designated 11 February as World Day of the Sick, “a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind (Letter Instituting the World Day of the Sick, 13 May 1992,3). Anointing Mass: If you are ill, facing surgery, or otherwise feel in need of this healing sacrament, please join us on Tuesday, Feb 11th, at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the Mass. Why come to this Mass? Here’s information from the Catechism about the Sacrament of the Sick: ‘The fruits of this Sacrament are: ~Unity with the Passion of Christ, for the sick person’s own good and that of the whole Church. ~Strength, peace, and courage to endure as a Christian the sufferings of illness or old age. ~Forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the Sacrament of Penance. ~Restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of the soul. ~Preparation for entering eternal life.’

Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1527, 1532.

Our Corpus Christi Council will hold their monthly Pancake Breakfast Sunday, February 16th, from 8:30am to 12:30pm.
