Below is a the Call for Papers for the 2-nd Workshop on Tools and Technologies in Statistics, Machine Learning and Information Retrieval SMLIR https://sites.google.com/site/smlir2016aiai/home

Department of Computers and Information Technologies, University of Craiova to be held in conjunction with the upcoming 12th IFIP International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI 2016) http://conferences.cwa.gr/aiai2016/

Thessaloniki, Greece 16-18 September 2016 Given your interest in this subject, we would like to encourage you to submit a paper to the 2-nd SMLIR workshop. 2-nd SMLIR workshop aims bringing together researchers from academia and industry practitioners with special interest in statistics/machine learning, information retrieval, data mining to (1) discuss current state of the art tools and technologies, (2) identify patterns for proper usage of various options for different tasks, and (3) lay out a vision regarding practical ways in which tools and technologies will influence future applications. The organizers hope to obtain common background knowledge for integrating various tools and technologies in future applications and innovations in artificial intelligence research infrastructures. Cheers, Cristian Mihăescu --Within Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) research area there may be found several subareas such as Machine Learning/Statistics, Information Retrieval, Data Mining and lately Big Data and Cloud Computing. The exact boundaries between these research areas are not very clear and may mislead research efforts, each one having its own particularities in terms of input type and size, data processing methodologies and obtained output. As Data Mining makes intensive use of all these research subareas, it is mandatory to be aware of their subtle differences and, therefore, design and implement IDA systems that make research efforts sound and effective. The goal of this workshop is to gather research efforts that fall into any of the categories of subareas and have results into any application area. The workshop is looking for contributions that provide experimental results that are focused on proper usage of tools or technologies from Statistics, Machine Learning or Information Retrieval. From the practical point of view, the focus should be on presenting the details regarding what and how tools and technologies are used in order to obtain relevant data analysis engines. Research Issues Here are several research issues that may be addressed: • what technical issues impact on experimental results and validation of research activity? • what/how standards influence the interoperability in data analysis processes? • what makes a visual data analytics tool/technology appropriate for a certain research issue? • given a research issue, what tool/technology properly implements the needed data analysis algorithm (stream mining, classification, clustering, etc.)? • in experimental data analysis, what are the theoretical/practical constraints offered by existing tools/technologies? These questions and issues are not exclusive: the workshop solicits papers that touch on any theme related to educational application area.

Theoretical, philosophical or experimental papers are welcome. Papers will be reviewed by members of the program committee or other appropriate reviewers. Submission. All papers should be submitted either in a doc/docx or in a pdf form and they will be peer reviewed by at least 2 academic referees. Papers should not exceed 10 pages. Contributing authors must follow the Instructions for IFIP AICT Authors (please follow LNCS guidelines) Papers should be submitted via easychair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=smlir2016 Publication. Accepted papers will be presented orally in the AIAI 2016 conference and will be published in a proceedings volume organized by the main AIAI 2016 event by Springer in IFIP AICT series. Registration fees and benefits for the workshop’s participants are exactly identical with the ones of the main AIAI 2016 event.
