At Sabin, we are an inclusive community who empower compassionate, lifelong learners. Dear Sabin Families, Happy first days of fall! School is well underway and we have lots of updates and information. In addition to new staff transitioning to Sabin, we have been trying to finish interviews and become accustomed with our school schedule. We are happy to announce that Leah Rich has accepted the school secretary position at Sabin! Leah has generously volunteered her time and will officially begin next week. We are appreciative of the extended role that Mr. Kevin Carter has assumed and are still searching for a full-time media specialist/technology teacher. This year, our focus for staff professional development will be around three primary areas: Math, Differentiation and School Climate. We will continue our emphasis on improving literacy for all students. For 2016-17, 73.5% of all students met or exceeded standards on the state English language arts assessments. Our math data for last year reflects that 58.7% of our students met or exceeded standards on the state math assessment. We will continue to ensure that students receive interventions and will

introduce math interventions. We will also differentiate resources to ensure that students are receiving necessary and relevant curriculum. We will continue to ensure that our staff participate in IB professional development and offer IB monthly assemblies. We will also offer assemblies to our middle school students. Many families are wondering about the opening of Tubman Middle School and Sabin’s transition from a K-8 to a K-5 school. On Thursday, October 5th from 6:30 – 9 p.m., we will have a community meeting at Sabin to discuss the middle school. You are encouraged to attend. Food and childcare will be provided.

T H E S A B I N S E N T I N E L Principal’s Corner (Continued) We have rescheduled our Parent Volunteer night, All Hands on Deck for Thursday, October 12 from 5:30-7 P.M. If you are interested in volunteering at Sabin and want to know where to start, this is where you will find out more information.

On another note, I would like to encourage you to call ahead if you are planning to pick your child up early. Our secretaries are happy to locate students and to have them prepared. At the end of the school day, please be patient when trying to pick up students. Children are moving throughout the building and it may take a few minutes to locate them.

As always, thank you for your partnership in creating globally-minded, caring and principled leaders of the next generation!

Portland Public Schools is moving toward a middle school model for students in grades 6-8 as a way to provide expanded options and stronger programs to more students. In April, the PPS Board directed the district to open two middle schools by fall 2018 at Harriet Tubman and Roseway Heights. The district has developed a framework for exemplary middle grade education, and is working to implement a feeder pattern that would convert a number of K-8 schools to K-5 schools. This meeting will be a chance to become informed on the planning to date and to give input to the Board. The proposal for opening two new middle schools can be found here: https://www.pps.net/Page/10776 Important dates: Monday, October 2 - 6:30-9 P.M. – Community Forum at Madison, food, childcare & interpretation Thursday, October 5 - 6:30-9 P.M. — Community Forum at Sabin, food, childcare & interpretation

Brooke Elliott, 7th Grade NFL players countrywide are kneeling during the national anthem. Most sports players put their right hand over the chest. This protest was all started by Colin Kaepernick 13 months ago. He started by taking a seat on the bench but then changed to kneeling. Soon other NFL players joined in. Kaepernick was protesting for blacks and people of color. He believed they needed more rights. Now that we are swinging back into football season players all around the NFL are kneeling in protest. President Trump tweeted “Sports fans should never condone players that do not stand proud for their National Anthem or their Country. NFL should change policy!” He also tweeted “Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected!” A few hours after the first tweet Richard Sherman the Seahawks Cornerback posted a video about Trump's tweet asking the NFL owners to speak up. Sherman also tweeted “The behavior of the President is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. If you do not Condemn this divisive Rhetoric you are Condoning it!!” All over the country arguments against the NFL and Trump are breaking out. Some players continue to put their hand over their heart when others choose to knell. I hope this beautiful Francis Scott Key poem does not separate us from one another and that we can stop the arguing and have us all follow the first amendment. Sabin’s 2nd Annual International Day of Peace celebration was held last Thursday, September 21. We gathered to build awareness, community and acknowledge our agreements. We formed a giant Sabin School human peace sign (see page 1 of this newsletter for a photo) and leaders from each grade led their grade level in reciting a part of our peace agreement for the year.
