Dear OSU CVM Supporters, The Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) will be hosting our fifth annual charity bike ride, Ride the Heart of the Valley on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Every year, the Oregon State University, College of Veterinary Medicine’s, SCAVMA hosts the Ride the Heart of the Valley in accordance with AVMA’s One Health Challenge, and this year the theme is vector-borne diseases. We will be educating our participants on the current human and veterinary vector-borne diseases by placing informational signs along the route that riders can easily read as they ride. This ride is not only a fun and educational opportunity for the community, but also the proceeds from this event will be divided between two charities that focus on human and animal healthcare. The first is the Olive K. Britt Endowment for Emergency Medicine in the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University that is directed toward helping to pay for health care for patients of low income clients who otherwise might not be able to get appropriate health care for their pets. The second is the dental clinic run by the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis, which provides free dental services to low-income children. Providing health care for lowincome families and for their pets is a major concern in these difficult economic times. The ride will consist of a 12-mile loop within the Corvallis city limits, a 30-mile loop that will course south and west of Corvallis through Philomath and ends back in Corvallis, and a 60-mile loop that winds down the Willamette valley, across the river and back to Corvallis on Peoria Road. The short route provides a scenic, but minimally challenging experience, the middle route is of moderate length and provides a few modest hills, and the long route provides experienced riders with an opportunity to start the season off with an endurance ride warm up. Each rider is asked to pay $30 to register and to additionally raise funds, and we are hoping that the ride will generate in excess of $5000 this year for these worthwhile charities. This will be the fifth year for the ride and it will continue as a yearly event for SCAVMA and for the Corvallis biking community. We would love your support in the form of a donated gift, gift certificate or money donation. During the after party we host a raffle where participants can win the items donated by the community, and we would be honored to include your gift in this raffle. Thank you in advance for your support! “Ride the Heart of the Valley” Bike Ride Committee
