Bringing together international and Pakistani writers to showcase writing at its best

About the Karachi Literature Festival As the cold, dry offshore winds slowly shift away, and our southern metropolis begins to move towards the spring season, the time comes around again for an event that has become a happily anticipated annual feature of this city’s calendar. The Karachi Literature Festival (KLF), now being held for the fifth time, is not merely a local affair. With participants and visitors from all over the country, the KLF is truly an all-Pakistan event. More, with participants from India, UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, China, Canada, and Brazil, it is also truly an international event. The Festival this year is again being held at the Beach Luxury Hotel. Launched in 2010, the annual Festival remains free and open to all. It brings together and celebrates Pakistani and international authors writing in a variety of local, national, and international languages. It features fiction, poetry, prose, commentary, and analysis. There are debates, discussions, talks, mushairah (Urdu poetry recital), a book fair, readings, signings, film screenings, theatre, puppet shows, storytelling for children, dramatic readings, stand-up comedy, and musical and dance performances. The ancient storytelling art of Dastangoi is also featured here. This year, around thirty books will be launched at the KLF. There are special children’s events which will run alongside the regular sessions. A distinctive feature of the fifth KLF is the dedication of a portion of the Festival to a parallel series of Art-related events, curated by ArtNow under the KLF umbrella. And, of course, the best part of the Festival is the opportunity for baatain aur mulaqatain at the special level of discourse found only at KLF. Directed by Ameena Saiyid, co-founded by Ameena Saiyid and Asif Farrukhi, and produced by Oxford University Press, the Festival has grown rapidly. Attendance rose from roughly 5,000 in 2010 to 10,000 in 2011, to 15,000 in 2012, to 50,000 in 2013. Each year, the speakers have been outstanding. Previous keynote speakers have included Shamsur Rahman Faruqi (2010), Karen Armstrong (2011), William Dalrymple (2012), Nadeem Aslam and Intizar Husain (2013). The keynote speaker at the inauguration this year will be the renowned Indian historian, Dr Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma Gandhi. The award-winning novelist, Kamila Shamsie, and the BBC broadcaster, Raza Ali Abidi, will be the keynote speakers at the closing ceremony. For the first time in the Festival’s history, awards will be given to Pakistani authors for three different prize categories: KLF-Coca-Cola Best Non-Fiction Book Prize, KLF-Embassy of France Prize, and KLF Peace Prize. The panel of judges for the prizes include some of Pakistan’s most eminent critics, writers, and scholars.
