A note from Dr. Woods

Happy New Year and welcome back from a long winter vacation! Unbelievably, one more holiday season has passed like a whirlwind! Before it’s a memory I would like to thank all who helped make it a success for so many families near and far. At such a busy time of year, you answered a call by creating festive events, by sharing family traditions, helping with classroom activities, and assisting Wakefield families in need. I am deeply moved by the Walton community’s commitment to looking out for and showing kindness to one another. The children came back happy, refreshed and excited to see their teachers and friends. Remember that the children love to go outside, so temperature and wind chill permitting, they will be going out and will need warm clothing (hats, mittens, snow pants, boots).

As we enter the New Year, I know you will cherish your family, friends, and celebrate the goodness in the Walton community! Best regards,

Dr. Eileen Woods

FROM THE OFFICE Nurses Notes As most parents are aware, HEAD LICE infestation is a frequent problem among school age children. No one wants them, but sometimes for reasons beyond our control, children get them. I think by now, most people realize it is not a sign of poor hygiene, but rather a case of bad luck. There are several things you can do to minimize your child’s risk: Preventative measures: AVOID head-to-head (hair-tohair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties & camp). Lice are spread most commonly by direct head-tohead (hair-to-hair) contact and much less frequently by sharing clothing or belongings onto which lice or nits may have crawled or fallen. DO NOT share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes. DO NOTshare infested combs, brushes, or towels. DO NOTlie on beds, couches, pillows, rugs, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person. PLEASE REMEMBER: Thankfully, head lice infestation is not a serious health issue, although it is an enormous nuisance!

The earlier a problem is found, the quicker it can be remedied.

Regular weekly head checks, even when you have not been notified of cases within a school, dance class, or athletic team are highly recommended. We have had a couple of cases of head lice at the Walton School recently. These cases are in different classes. It is often difficult to prevent the spread of head lice as children frequently engage in such closecontact activities. Therefore, it is important to check your child frequently throughout the year, even if a case has not been reported through the school. Please feel free to call me at (781) 246-6494 if you have any questions. Please take these precautions: 1.Check your child’s hair for eggs (also called nits). 2.If you suspect your child has head lice, ask your health care provider to diagnose the problem and recommend appropriate treatment. 3.Tell me if your child has been diagnosed as having head lice. 4.If head lice infestation is diagnosed, do not return your child to school until she or he has been treated and seen by me before going to school. Welcome back from Break! Mrs. Tetreau’s PE classes are now focusing on Gymnastics. One of the main components of Gymnastics is BALANCE. Static balance is balancing on your base of support in one spot. Here is an example of V-Stand which demonstrates counter balance.

ART

Happy New Year! One for my new year’s resolutions is to engage my students in more meaningful conversations about their process of creating. So the question is how DO you talk to kids about their art work? Here are some helpful hints to do at home when your students bring home projects. Some of the most common things to say is “Oh, that’s nice”, “That’s interesting”, or “That’s so pretty”. While they all very positive comments, they may not help start a conversation about art as process. Here are some things you could say that would help start a conversation. Focus praise on the effort, not the product. For example: “How did you do this?” “I like the interesting way you used the brush.” Talk about the shapes, colors & marks you see. For example: “What I notice first about your drawing is . . .” “What I like most about this is . . .” “Isn’t it interesting how you’ve used lots of . . . “ I know keeping these things in mind will be help my conversations with your students as I hope they will help you as well.
