Summer Reading for MYP English 10 / 2016-2017 Dear Rising Sophomores, Before entering school in August, every MYP IB 10 student will read Catcher in the Rye and complete a related assignment over the summer. This assignment is due on the second day of school. You will be able to use this assignment on the reading assessment which will take place during the first week of classes. Please make sure you allow the proper amount of time to read AND complete the assignment during the summer. We will begin the year with the understanding that you have already read the text and understand how the author uses basic literary tools to create meaning. It is important to read the book so that you will have a solid background for the work we will complete during quarter one. You are strongly encouraged to purchase your own book so that you can write margin notes and highlight the vocabulary as you read. These notes will help prepare you for the assignments that we will complete during the fall. If you need to check out a copy of the novel see your English teacher before final exams. SUM M ER READING ASSIGNM ENT : Catcher in the Rye DIALECTICAL JOURNAL (Complete this assignment in a word docum ent. It will be placed on Turnitin.com on the second day of classes.) A dialectical journal is a w ay of learning to interact w ith your text, a w ay of making reading more personal and immediate. DIALECTIC means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by the exchange of ideas.” The purpose of this journal is to allow you to have a “conversation” w ith the text that w ill deepen your understanding of its contents. For each of the eleven literary elements listed below , you w ill create one dialectical jou rnal entry. In total, you w ill have 11 dialectical journal entries in all for this novel. Each entry consists of a passage from the text (including author and page number in MLA format), your personal response to the passage and your analytical explanation of the passage. Each e ntry must include the following: 1. Passage : The passage, in MLA format, w ith the literary device underlined. 2. Pe rsonal Re sponse : Why do you find this passage interesting? The comparison of loved. the scent of her mother’s hair to the “warm smell of bread…” suggests that just like bread, the narrator is almost thanking her mother for the comfort— and the life—she provides.
