period, but it is much easier if we don’t have to send out delinquent notices.

Hello Fellow Rockhounds, I would like to thank all of you that helped with the festival to help make it a great success. The comments I have heard were mostly positive. Many of us put in long hours and it could not have happened without your help. You should all be proud of the quality work that we put into our annual festival, but I think we can do better! We are always looking for ideas to improve the event next year. We will start planning sessions for next year in a couple of months. If you have any observations or ideas for next year, please let June or me know. Also think about how you would like to help with the festival next year.

The Founder’s Day Picnic will be held on June 21st. I am sure Michael Paone would appreciate help with some of the details. Please volunteer yourselves to help him. The more help he has, the easier it will be. The reservation form is here in the Breccia. Please send in your reservation by May 26th. It is always a lot of fun. I hope to see all of you there.

There are several interesting field trips coming up soon. There is a listing of several upcoming trips here in the Breccia. Contact Dean Welder for information about them (E-mail is best). He is listed in the directory. As always, guests are welcome on field trips, with proper introducYou probably haven’t thought about it, but your annual dues are due at the end tions. of this month. Sunshine Earl Klein, a vendor at our show, passed away on April 25th. Our condolences go to his son & daughter in law, Harvey and Marie.

by Randy Harris

Let me start by thanking the club for sponsoring my experience at the week-long CFMS Earth Science camp at Zzyzx. June and I arrived on Sunday March 29th, checked in and moved into our room. There were a lot of friendly people to show us around and answer questions about the activities for the week. The options were seemingly endless; wire-wrapping, silversmithing, precious metal clay, beading, faceting, lapidary and my favorite, field trips. I signed up for all of the scheduled trips, where we were to collect a variety of agates, jaspers, silver lace onyx, petrified wood and cave formations from Coco Weef Mine. One of the trips was cancelled, so I spent that day polishing some of my finds from the first couple of days. There is some very pretty material from all of the locations, which I will display at upcoming meetings. June went on the field trip the first day, then decided to try her hand at beading. She picked up the techniques they were teaching quite rapidly and turned out bead bracelets and necklaces at an astonishing rate. Even the teacher was amazed at the speed of project completion and the complexity of the projects that "no beginner would dare attempt". Since our return, she has been building a stockpile of various kinds of beads for future projects. Overall, we had a great deal of fun making new friends, eating very good food, and trying new things. I highly recommend Camp Zzyzx for anyone who wants to learn one or more of the many fascinating facets of our hobby.

Margo’s phone number is (408) 578-2841, or email her at [email protected].

Bragging Rights Theme The theme for May is the color “purple”. The Bragging Rights contest winner for April was: Louis Latronica for Adults.

Show and Tell Members’ Display Steven and Alan May brought a piece of Plasma Agate covered with druzy Quartz from their recent collecting trip to the Clear Creek Management Area. Guest, Katherine, brought a sample of an estate she acquired for help in identification. Next month’s program will be on inclusions in Thundereggs, so bring lots of samples! Let’s load the tables for May though. Members with last name starting with “I”, “J”, or “K” are up, but anyone can bring something to share with the group.

That Last Piece - Our Trip to The Brush Wellman Mine By Jim & Missy Fox In 1998 while on one of our many collecting trips, we stopped off at Neno's Rock Shop in Delta, Utah. While going through their stones, we came upon some beautiful purple pieces. When we asked Shirley Schena, the owner, what it was she told us it was a local material called "Tiffany Stone"; aka Bertrandite. When we asked her if we could collect it ourselves, she gave us the phone number of the Brush Wellman Mine and said to ask for the foreman Mr. Greg Hawkins.

down the slope for the camper. It was getting dark fast and as I approached the camper, on the flat area where the trucks drove, I noticed something black pressed into the ground. I tried to see if it had any color, but it was too dark. I decided to dig it up and take it anyway. If it was junk, I could toss it out later. It was about 6 inches thick, 8 inches wide, 12 inches long with a black rind all around and a thin coating of mud on the top and bottom. I quickly dislodged it and loaded it We called the plant and asked Greg if it would in the camper. We drove to the check stabe possible for us to collect at the mine. After we signed the waiver Greg escorted us to a large hill of stones. On our way to the hill I could see, to the left, another area that had large purple boulders, some over 4 feet in diameter. I asked if we could collect there but he said it was too close to the trucks passing by. He showed us where to park and as we started up the hill we saw all kinds of stones colored yellow, green, orange, purple, black & white. I did not know what these stones were, but I wanted and wished I had time to at least take some of them. We only had a couple of hours to collect, so we concentrated on the purple material. As it became dark, Greg called to me that it was time to go. I quickly picked up my back pack and carefully scaled Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society San Jose, CA

The next year, we made a special trip to collect on the site again armed with the knowledge of what to look for and the time necessary to collect it. Unfortunately, Greg said the mine was now closed to rockhounds. It seems someone snuck onto the property with out permission and used heavy equipment to collect the Bertrandite. This convinced the owner to close the mine to rockhounds. So "That Last Piece", turned out to be the very last piece we ever collected at the source.

Safety Matters By Ellery Borow, AFMS Safety Chair Via AFMS Newsletter, June-July 2015 edition Dangers That Lurk in the Dark…. … and in the Light can be present in many of our rockhound activities. Think of the avid field collectors using power tools to drill holes in rocks so that they can be split using feathers and wedges - what a dust cloud is raised. Think of the lapidary artist using her home-made machine with all its exposed drive belts and pulley’s both just waiting to grab a loose long sleeve cuff. Think of some kids in a quarry hammering on a rock— with sharp, splintery, rock shards spraying in all directions. All the situations just described have obvious dangers—inhaling rock dust, catching clothing, hair and fingers in equipment pinch point; sharp shards damaging eyes, etc. While those situations harbor obvious hazards, other situations may not be so obvious as hazards. Let’s think of that avid field collector once again. To arrive at his work site he may have taken a short cut and walked across a small stream. Well, take it from one who knows, wet rocks can be very, no make that extremely, slippery. Falling and getting wet may not be all that serious, but falling and breaking a bone most certainly is. Soldering on that silver pendant may produce a striking work of art; however, the flux and pickling fumes could be toxic. Wandering around a famous quarry to collect fluorescent minerals after dark one may see incredible treasures. What one may not see are the holes of unknown depth. Even a very shallow hole may cause one to loose ones balance - especially after dark . Another commonly ignored and often under appreciated is not keeping ones fingers in view. Reaching over an edge to grab a hand hold? Ones out of sight fingers could find not a hand hold, but instead, a very unwelcoming critter hiding there out of sight. And not being able to see ones fingers as one holds a rock on that slab saw is just asking for pinch point trouble. Putting your fingers in a hole to pull out the treasurers therein? Again, take it from one who know from experience, there could be something besides treasures continues on page 13 Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society San Jose, CA

continued from page 12 in that hole, pocket, vug, cavity or crack. There could well be something that bites, stings, etc., inside. Working at that club show or workshop? A simple tester found at most hardware or electrical supply stores can be used to check those outlets, extension cords and power strips. While circuits can either work or not work, there are additional issues such a poor, faulty, or missing grounds, reversed polarities and non -functioning GFCI’s that are not so noticeable with just a glance. Always keep in mind the potential of hidden dangers lurking in our rockhound hobby. Keep in mind that it is not just the dark of night that harbors hidden hazards, although night is when the monsters come out, isn’t it? Please be safe with what you do and keep in mind the potential hidden dangers, as well as the not so hidden dangers lurking just around the corner. Your safety maters!
