One idea that I’m working to institute is to invite Walt Wright to display his petrified wood specimens. He is one of the world’s leading paleontological authority on petrified wood and plants. His specimens are incredible and make a noteworthy display

Another idea is that I would like to see is the demonstrator area expanded to include some other skills not currently demonstrated. Having a guest artist or two demonstrating an art that we don’t usually see would be good. I appreciate the group of people who currently demonstrate throughout the festival, but I know it can be tiring to do demonstrations all day long. That is the main reason to try to bring in some outside people to help.

Now it’s time to start thinking about the 2016 festival. I have a few ideas that I would like to institute, but I’m still looking for your ideas and suggestions. I’m willing to take suggestions and ideas until our November meeting. After that meeting, we will have to stick to the plan that we have developed.

I’d like to establish a festival master calendar to make planning and executing the festival easier. Each chairman will have target dates to complete their tasks and help us figure out what jobs might need more work and people to help. This is why I asked each chairman for their timeline from their jobs last year and if their jobs were adequately described in the festival chairmens’ book. Those time lines will help create a board overview of each position, and when placed in the master calendar, benefit the whole festival. So, what are your ideas.? Are there changes that you would like to see? Would you like to know more about the festival? The next meeting will be September 14. The location is still to be determined and will be announced at the August meeting and in the September Breccia. It will be a restaurant where attendees can have dinner while working through the meeting. I hope you can be there to share your ideas.

Rock &Gem is the officially sponsored hobby magazine of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies - our official magazine! They and Senior Consulting Editor Bob Jones have done much to promote rockhounding and rock clubs like those to which you and I belong. As you may know, I’m a regular contributing author, as well, mostly with articles for their “Rock & Gem Kids” section. Recently, Rock & Gem Managing Editor Lynn Varon has asked my help soliciting articles from with the ranks of the regional and national Federations for their “Lapidary of the Month” Feature. “Lapidary of the Month” is usally the very first article appearing in each issue of the magazine. In it, a lapidary artist (amateur or professional) describes a relatively simple project with a photo and step by step procedures for other to follow. For an example, see page 8 of the July 2015 issue. We would like to encourage you to write such a contribution! Here are the specifications: 

A 500 word description telling step by step how you crafted your lapidary project from start to finish, saved as a document file. At least one close up digital photo graph of the finished project (with camera set for high resolution, i.e., 300 dpi at 4 inches by 5 inches, minimum. Send your document file and digital photo (.tif or .jpg) as attachments in an email to [email protected] with the subject line “Lapidary of the Month.”

How Knowledgeable Are You on Public Lands Policy? By Shirley Leeson, ALAA President Via AFMS newsletter, June/July 2015 edition

Have You Ever Wondered How the Planning and Decision Making Comes About? Recently in researching an old article by the late Bob Cranston, Secretary of ALAA in 2003, I ran across an article about “A Conservationist’s Guild to BLM Planning and Decision-Making, Using FLPMA and NEPA to Protect Public Lands.” It was written by Erik Schlenker-Goodrich of the Wilderness Society. You can download this guide, it’s about 135 pages, but it’s enlightening in showing how the Wilderness Society works to protect Public Lands. Here are highlights of some of what is in the Guide:  Basic questions and answers on Pubic Lands Advisory. (pages 1-4)  A map to citizen participation in the BLM planning and decision-making, with emphasis on how to leverage place-based information to force the BLM to take conservationoriented action consistent with the law(pages 5-11)  The Legal Landscape: Preservation, conservation and exploration of the land. This includes descriptions of various conservation units managed by the agency (pages 12-15)  The BLM’s Core Policy Framework, a detailed overview of general mission and core obligations of the BLM (pages 16-38)  Collecting Information: Inventories, Monitoring, and Evaluations (pages 39-49)  Planning and Decision-Making - How the BLM develops plans and how the agency subsequently puts those plans into practice. This deals with the BLM’s comprehensive resource management planning process. (pages 5089)  NEPA - National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, one of the most important environmental laws ever enacted, (pages 90-117)  Appeals, Protests and litigation, which outlines your options to challenge decisions with the BLM’s planning and decision-making process

breaks down and results in potentially illegal decisions. Page 118-135) If you or someone in your club would like to research this enlightening guild, I’m sure you will find it interesting, at the least. To me, it’s like going in to a child’s bedroom, and seeing a special item on a high shelf. It’s to look at, but out of the child’s reach to touch it. Much like the Wilderness we have out here in the west. You are not adult enough to be trusted with this, so you can only look at it and we will show you in pictures what is there…. The problem is, who is going to see all this beauty that has been locked away? At my age and with my health problems, I certainly won’t be able to hike into any of these areas many of them are thousands of acres, so this basically shuts me out. Is this fair? You decide…. Let ALAA Know If You Encounter Access Problems American Lands Access Association has been blessed with members and FRIENDS who have rallied to our side . . . It doesn’t get any better than that. There are still numerous problems involving rockhound access cropping up all over the country and we need your help to identify them, so please notify ALAA and get involved. Together we can try to do something to preserve our access to rockhound hunting sites. Nothing is better than have people in the local area take the lead on publicizing road closures, site closures, etc. These are the people close to the problems, and sometimes that person is YOU. YOU ARE NOT ALONE, so let ALAA know how we can help and support you. We are all volunteers, some with lots of time to work to solve problems and others with limited time. But you all are a part of this vast puzzle and we need you. Excerpted from ALAA Newsletter (Jan-Mar, 2015) ALAA is the lobbying arm of the American Federation, working on behalf of rockhounds to keep public lands open and accessible to all, including the elderly and handicapped.

Each year we have elections. To do that, we have three people from the Board and general membership put together a slate of proposed officers. To get this slate, the nominating committee must ask other members to run for offices. If they know ahead of time who would be willing to run for a particular (or any) office, AND who wouldn’t or couldn’t accept any position for the following year, their job is made much simpler. Please call Randy Harris for further information (831) 438-5150. Please note that many positions can be filled by members with little to no experience, and mentoring is available to anyone who would like to take on a position but is unsure as to how to do the job. Please fill out this sheet to indicate what offices and or committee you are willing to fill, turn it in at the next general meeting, or mail it to Randy Harris, 107 Dell Way, Scotts Valley CA 95066 If you live out of state, you don’t need to do this.
