printed from the Website, or you can look here in the Breccia. The cost will be $10 per person attending. This is the same price as last year and the food will be excellent. Please send in your reservation early so we can order the proper amount of food. We will be having the Toys for Tots collection as we have in past years. Let me know if you would like to help decorate the Cabana Club.

Hello Fellow Rock Enthusiasts, Hopefully you weren't inconvenienced by the lack of a meeting last month. We were given very short notice about the plumbing problem and did not have time to secure another venue. I appointed a nominating committee at the board meeting and they have met to call members about positions for next year. Thanks to everyone who filled out a Time and Talent sheet. This was a great help to Nominating Committee. Thanks to June Harris, Rita Jarrett and Rick Kennedy for volunteering to serve on the Nominating Committee. The Time and Talent sheets also help the President when it comes time to appoint committees. There are several committee positions that are fairly easy. It would be a good place for a newer member to get involved. The Nominating Committee will announce their recommendations for new officers at the October meeting. Elections and Silent Auction will be held at the November meeting.

There will be a potluck social before the October meeting. We will start at 6:30 PM. Please bring a dish (salad, side dish, main dish or dessert) to share for at least six servings. The club will provide drinks. Guests are welcome to join us. Come and have a good time! If you are going to any Rock and Gem shows in the near future, and you see a dealer that you would like to see at our festival, please take down their contact information and send it to me. Include their E-mail address, if they have one. I am always looking for dealers with something new and different.

The Board has reserved the Cabana Club for our annual Installation Dinner. It will be catered by Willow Street. The reservation form can be

Remembering Frank Monez, JR Another part of our society’s past has gone. On August 30th, Frank Monez, Jr. passed away. Frank was an active member of our society from 1975 until 2009. Frank and his wife, Betty, often took their trailer across country and stopped at many collecting sites along the way and did this for a large number of years till Betty's passing. Later, Frank became a long time companion of Ernestine Smith and they made several trips into Utah and Montana as they sought family history at the library in Salt Lake City and rocks and minerals in Montana. Frank was always doing research into collecting sites and created a detailed library of places he had traveled or wished to go to. He always had his trailer ready and would be ready in a minute to go back to favorite places and/or to explore new ones. His three most favorite places to collected were Topaz Mountain for topaz, Texas Springs for limb cast and Opal Spring for Paisley Agate. He was a mineral collector and often told stories of going to various places, including Alaska, to pan for gold. Frank held memberships in two gold panning groups: United Prospectors Inc. (UPI) and Gold Prospectors of America (GPAA) where he held a number of offices. Frank was an active member in our society and held a variety of positions throughout the years. Frank was our society president in 1980 and our annual show chair in 1998. Most notably, Frank was our Public Lands Access Committee chairman for many years. Our society benefitted from his extensive work with the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies (CFMS) Public Lands Access Committee (PLAC). Frank was a staunch advocate for keeping publics lands Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society San Jose, CA

open for rockhounds and clubs. He regularly kept our society aware of upcoming legislation and political moves to limit our hobbies access to public lands. Frank was the CFMS PLAC chairman for several years and a committee member for many years. Frank was a strong proponent for developing the CFMS Endowment fund and the CFMS Scholarship fund. He was nominated by our society as our CFMS Scholarship honoree in 2010. Frank was honored at the 2010 CFMS convention, and chose San Jose State University to receive a scholarship in his honor for one of their Earth Science upper classmen. Also, Frank was awarded the CFMS Golden Bear in 2007 for his work with the CFMS. When Frank had to back away from being an active member in our society, we were left with more than a hole on our committee list. Not only did we miss his smiling face and warm heart, but we lost our Public Lands Access warrior, too. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew and served with him.

Attention Field Trip Leaders By Mark Nelson, EMT Via CFMS newsletter October 2015

Field trip leaders, you are a key person in your lapidary club! You are not only a person who is tasked to lead a pack of rockhounds for the day or weekend. You are a guide, nurse, medic, and shepherd. Our members look to our field trip leaders for more than a person to show them where to find collectible minerals. They look to you for an interesting and safe experience. They want a person to tell them what to bring, where to go, what to find– and then get them home safely with their finds. Too often on a field trip the leader will arrive at an area, get out, show the members what to collect and let them know to be back at a certain time—that’s it. No safety information. At other times the field trip leader will say “Be sure to watch out for rattlesnakes!” The continued on page 7 6

Each year we have elections. To do that, we have three people from the Board and general membership put together a slate of proposed officers. To get this slate, the nominating committee must ask other members to run for offices. If they know ahead of time who would be willing to run for a particular (or any) office, AND who wouldn’t or couldn’t accept any position for the following year, their job is made much simpler. Please call Randy Harris for further information (831) 438-5150. Please note that many positions can be filled by members with little to no experience, and mentoring is available to anyone who would like to take on a position but is unsure as to how to do the job. Please fill out this sheet to indicate what offices and or committee you are willing to fill, turn it in at the next general meeting, or mail it to Randy Harris, 107 Dell Way, Scotts Valley CA 95066 If you live out of state, you don’t need to do this.
