cancelled. That being said, we are still participating in the Box Tops for Education, Campbell's Soup Labels, and Chief receipts programs. In fact, we were just able to deposit $618.50 into the Elementary Activities Fund from Box Top collections. Thank you so much for collecting those for the benefit of our kids. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTIONS Fort Jennings Chapter of National Honor Society inducted 8 new members this year during their ceremony on December 3, 2015. OUTDOOR HABITAT PLOTS On Saturday, October 10th, Fort Jennings High School began the establishment of another outdoor educational habitat area. Mr.

Jostpille and the Environmental Science class are taking the lead on this project. The first stage was the planting of 200 evergreen trees and approximately 800 feet of split rail fence. The second stage will take place in the spring and will consist of a half acre pollinator plot along with three additional plots of various seed mixes. This area will be another outdoor educational lab that will be open to all students in the district. This area was funded by a Lowe’s $5,000 grant awarded to Mr. Jostpille and a local Black Swamp Pheasants Forever Pollinator grant of $2,000. Thanks to the FJ Lions Club, Black Swamp Chapter of Pheasants Forever, FJ Volunteer Fire Dept and all volunteers in the planting of the trees and installing of the fence. JUNIOR HIGH STEM Aluminum foil, plastic bears, a tub of water, and a little scientific reasoning has all the makings of a STEM project this year at Fort Jennings High School. Most of the 7th and 8th graders at Fort Jennings are taking a STEM class (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) as part of the curriculum. The class is taught by Jeff Jostpille and recently they were working on a project called Bears in a Boat. It involved using knowledge of surface area, weight, balance, and architecture to build a boat with a 6” by 6” piece of foil that would float the most plastic bears. Each group of 4 students in the 40 student class was asked to design a boat with the small piece of foil. They could use nothing else but could fold it any way they desired. A plastic tub of water was used as the lake and they needed to pile as many plastic bear figures into the boat as possible before it sank. They had several trials to practice their designs before the competition began. The winning group

DRINKING WATER NOTICE Our water system was in violation of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for TTHM when monitoring under Stage 1 for the Disinfectant Byproducts rules ended. The average level of TTHM over the four quarters of 2014 was 0.085 milligrams per liter (MG/L). The standard for TTHM is 0.080 MG/L. Stage 2 rules require us to meet the MCL for TTHM’s at each location sampled and is calculated over a 4 quarter time frame. Therefore, we will not know if the system is in violation or any corrective measures made were effective until th after 4 quarter of 2015 samples are collected and analyzed. What should I do? You do not need to use alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor. What does this mean? The levels detected do not pose an immediate risk to your health. However, some people who drink water containing Trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous systems, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer. What is being done? Steps were taken to overhaul our water system in December 2015 to reduce TTHM formation and the water system is currently meeting the TTHM standard based on samples collected. The first test in January has been taken and all levels are significantly lower. Additional steps are being taken to reduce TTHM levels. had 64 bears in their boat before it sank! The students then made boats out of parchment paper, waxed paper, and a larger (8” by 8”) piece of foil. During the several weeks of the project, the students were also instructed by math teacher Kevin Horstman and guidance counselor Mindy Losh on how to use their class data to make a box and whisker plot. They worked several days on plotting the class results, making several of the box and whisker plots to turn in for a grade. They also were required to create a lab report after each activity which included a hypothesis, procedure, data, and conclusion set up like a small science fair project that reinforces the scientific method they are learning in science classes. Increasing the surface area of the boat by using the 8” by 8” foil square increased the amount of bears held to 158! The winning team consisted of Nathan Sealts, Sydnie Siebeneck, Noah Wittler, and Blake Schram.
