RGHF’s Founding Member and Centennial Chair PDG Matts Ingemanson announced a partnership between RLI and RGHF at the RLI Annual Convention Breakfast, June 1, 2016, Soul, Korea. Fellow Rotarians, Distinguished Rotarians and Dear Friends, When David Linett contacted me about creating a Rotary History Course for the RLI's Graduate  Program, I thought it was a brilliant idea’.  RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) is the leading standard for Rotary leadership training. RGHF (Rotary  Global History Fellowship) is the leading standard for information about Rotary History. RLI’s philosophy states that Rotarians are to have knowledge about where Rotary has been, where it  is now and a vision of what Rotary can be."  I have always said that we need to understand Rotary’s History in order to understand Rotary’s future  because everything in Rotary evolves from its tradition. Somebody told me that Rotary is the biggest university in the world. We have about 20,000 lectures  every week in 35,000 Rotary Clubs around the world. In universities, we gain knowledge. In Rotary, we gain wisdom. We gain wisdom by giving back to  society. A Native American once told me that the meaning of life is to pass on the world to the next  generation. That’s what we do in Rotary! We pass on the world to the next generation in better  condition. One purpose of RLI is to help Rotary improve its retention rate. Rotary History teaches us that  retention was a challenge already from the beginning. The first four Rotarians were Paul Harris,  Sylvester Scheele, Gus Loehr and Hiram Shorey. After three weeks, two of the first four Rotarians  had already left Rotary. Despite this setback, Rotary managed to increase its membership to 100  members in the first year. They learned early on how to deal with retention. The way they did it was to  focus on recruiting young professionals. Paul Harris was 37 years old when he founded Rotary in 1905. He was only 42 when he became  President of the National Association of Rotary Clubs and he was 44 when he finished as President of  We will celebrate the Centennial of the Rotary Foundation next year. The facts are that the Rotary  Foundation was started with a leftover of $26.50 from the Rotary Convention in 1917. After that not  much happened for the next 30 years until Paul Harris died in 1947. Rotarians then started to  contribute $1,000 in the memory of Paul Harris. This evolved into the Paul Harris Fellowship. The  Rotary Foundation now raises between $250 million and $300 million per year. PolioPlus took 10 years to get off the ground and become the world wide project it is today. Rotary  has now raised more than $1.2 billion and we have also inspired other organizations and  governments to contribute another $12 billion. U.S. Congress that does not seem to agree on  anything has contributed more than $3.5 billion because of Rotary and Congress still contributes $300  million every year.  Polio is now almost eradicated. An estimated 2.5 million people live Polio free thanks to Rotary. This  is the power of Rotary.  It typically takes long time for Rotary to get its act together, but once Rotary focuses its resources on  a project, it becomes a very powerful force.

Rotary is also one of the Founders of the United Nations. The U.S. State Department asked Rotary  International to help develop the Statutes of the United Nations. Rotary also organized and managed  the United Nations charter meeting in San Francisco 1945. Forty­nine of the delegates from different  countries were also Rotarians. There is a lot in Rotary History that makes us proud to be Rotarians Great leaders in Rotary are students of Rotary History. Some of them are here in this room today. By adding Rotary History to its training program, RLI will provide an added dimension to the Rotary  leadership training. Thank you very much!
