All Saints Sunday November 6, 2016 GATHERING Thanksgiving for Baptism P: Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty, you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring, you are the fire of rebirth. Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around us, above us: our life is born in you. You are the fountain of resurrection. Praise to you for saving waters: Noah and the animals survive the flood, Hagar discovers your well. The Israelites escape through the sea, and they drink from your gushing rock. Naaman washes his leprosy away, and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again. At this font, holy God, we pray: Praise to you for the water of baptism and for your Word that saves us in this water. Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation. Illumine our days. Enliven our bones, Dry our tears. Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us. Satisfy our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Savior who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 1

C: Amen. HYMN-“Shall We Gather at the River”

# 423

Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Hymn-of-Praise:

Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray. C: Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD

First reading- Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18 The book of Daniel was written in the second century BCE, when the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes was severely persecuting the Jews. Daniel’s vision of the four beasts serves to proclaim the message that human kings will come and go, but the kingdom will ultimately belong to God and to God’s people. 1

In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: 2I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, 3and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 15

As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. 16I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: 17“As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. 18But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever— forever and ever.” L: C:

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 149 (Read responsively by verse, the Pulpit side begins with the light text and the Piano side responds with the dark text. All read the refrain.) 3

4 Refrain For the LORD takes pleasure | in the people and adorns the | poor with victory.

1

Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD| a new song, God’s praise in the assembly | of the faithful. 2 Let Israel rejoice | in their maker; let the children of Zion be joyful | in their ruler. 3 Let them praise their maker’s | name with dancing; let them sing praise with tambou- | rine and harp. 4 For the LORD takes pleasure | in the people and adorns the | poor with victory. 5 Let the faithful re- | joice in triumph; let them sing for joy | on their beds. 6 Let the praises of God be | in their throat and a two-edged sword | in their hand, 7 to wreak vengeance | on the nations and punishment | on the peoples, 8 to bind their | kings in chains and their nobles with | links of iron, 9 to inflict on them the judg- | ment decreed; this is glory for all God’s faithful ones. | Hallelujah! 4 Refrain For the LORD takes pleasure | in the people and adorns the | poor with victory.

Second reading- Ephesians 1:11-23 After giving thanks for the faith of the Ephesians, Paul prays that they might understand the wisdom, hope, and power of God that is embodied in Jesus Christ. 4

11

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. 15

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Gospel Acclamation

Gospel- Luke 6:20-31 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

In echoes of the prophet Isaiah and Mary’s song of praise, Jesus reveals surprising things about who enjoys blessing and who endures woe. He invites his disciples to shower radical love, blessing, forgiveness, generosity, and trust, even to enemies and outsiders. 20

Then [Jesus] looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in 6

heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 “Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. 27 “But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.” The gospel concludes:

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon—Pastor John Kuziej HYMN-“For All Your Saints, O Lord”

# 427

(During the hymn, you are invited to come to the Memorial Table and light a candle in memory of loved ones.)

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, 7

of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession With the people of God gathered here and throughout the world, we offer our prayers for the church, those in need, and all of creation. A brief silence.

For the church and its leaders, that we continue to proclaim the gospel of salvation to every corner of the earth, so that all embody the hope of eternal life, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For the well-being of creation, for the seas and their creatures, for those preparing for changing weather, and for those who serve as good stewards of God’s gifts, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For peace among nations, for governments and electorates, for all who rule and have authority at any level, that they rule with justice, keeping in mind those who have no power, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For the troubled and terrified, the poor and hungry, the abuser and abused, those who weep, those suffering from malaria or any sickness (especially), that God lift up people to provide care and consolation, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For those who lead and support music in this assembly, that our song may point us all to Christ; for the newly baptized (especially those baptized today), that the Holy Spirit guides them in love and service, following the example of our Lord, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. Here other intercessions may be offered.

In thanksgiving for all the saints, known and unknown, who have died in the faith, that they serve as witnesses to the inheritance granted to us by Jesus Christ, let us pray. Have mercy, O God.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear those who call upon your name. We commend all our spoken and silent prayers to you, trusting in your abundant mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Stewardship Temple Talk—Mr. Steve Kickert MEAL

Greeting of Peace PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ.

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, and may say,

"Peace be with you," Sit OFFERING (Offering is received as the Lord’s Table is prepared.) Offertory Hymn: “As Saints of Old” # 695 (Please stand for the last verse) Offertory Prayer P: Let us pray. C: Holy One, all that we have comes from you. You bless our lives with the companionship of your people, the freedom that comes from the forgiveness of sin, the joy of thanksgiving for Earth and all its bounty. Turn us toward those in need, in the name of the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. 10

C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. “Holy, Holy, Holy”

P: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, you have brought us this far along the way. In times of bitterness you did not abandon us, but guided us into the path of love and light. In every age you sent prophets to make known your loving will for all humanity. The cry of the poor has become your own cry; our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire. In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant to preach good news to the afflicted, to break bread with the outcast and despised, and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 11

C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we await the day when Jesus shall return to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death. Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, Amen. C: Amen. P: Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world. Come, Spirit of freedom! And let the church say, Amen. C: Amen. P: Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age, that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection, we might live in the freedom and hope of your Son. Through him, with him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. C: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer

LORD 'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

All Saints Sunday is thankful to God for making us saints: we are saints through the gracious will of the Father, the forgiveness of sins accomplished for us by Jesus on the cross, and through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. As saints of the Lord we seek to follow Jesus and serve by telling others of his love for them, and helping the many poor in our world have the basic necessities of life. On All Saints Sunday we remember those who have died in the faith and are now with Jesus in the heavenly home he has prepared for us all by grace. You will have opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one today. Light your candle from the Paschal or Easter Candle, a reminder that Jesus, risen from the dead, is the light of the world no darkness can overcome. We remember today those who have died in the past year: Irene Straessle (January 29th); Michelle Byington (April 21st); Marilyn Congleton (April 22nd); and Eleanor Mitchell (August 10th). Last Sunday combined offerings for the E.L.C.A. World Hunger Appeal totaled $532.77; thank you to all who gave for this cause.
