Jewish Seniors Luncheon ongoing every Thursday Call 250-477-7185

The Jewish Seniors Wheels to Meals Programme is a highlight for many seniors. It is especially designed to meet the needs of those seniors without means of transportation who rely on others every time they need to leave their place of residence.

On the Cooking shelf of our The Lunch, every Thursday is a delicious meal at a very modest price, renewed JCCV Library, this and an opportunity to meet and chat with friends and acquaintances, 636-page book is a treasureand make new friends. For many it is the only opportunity to socialize trove of culinary information. in a Jewish environment. Special table settings for holidays and Those who already know cakes and flowers for each senior’s birthday make the lunches even a good deal about Jewish more special.Everybody is welcome, and of course age is no barrier. cooking will surely learn new The Jewish Seniors Wheels to Meals programme has been running things, and those without almost since the inception of the Jewish Community Centre. The a strong background in the Programme Co-coordinator is long-time JCC volunteer Lynne Rauch, subject will have a hard time with the able assistance of Jody Lebane, the volunteer driver coputting it down. The author coordinator. is a chef and historian who writes a Jewish Food blog Volunteer as a Driver for the Programme and has appeared on U.S. There is also a role for the younger set – as volunteer drivers. Driver radio and television. In this volunteers are a critical part of keeping the Wheels to Meals program Encyclopedia you’ll come working smoothly, and if you have the time and a vehicle please across information that may contact Lynne Rauch or Edie Reckon at the JCC at 250-477-7185. make you say frequently, as I did, “Who knew?”. For instance, at this time of year when Canadian and American Thanksgiving tables in countless homes have a roast turkey as the centrepiece, I learned that more turkey per capita is consumed in Israel than in any other nation. Marks claims that of the great quantities of turkey produced in Israel, much of the white meat is exported, since the dark meat is preferred, partly because it can be ground and transformed into schnitzel, pastrami and so on. At Rosh Hashanah, I shared with my family that (according to this book) in many cultures honey symbolizes immortality and truth, leading to the practice in ancient times of embalming or burying great leaders with honey. Apparently, before honey produced by bees was in widespread use in the Middle East, the common sweetener was devash or a honey-like syrup made from dates, and this is what was referred to in the phrase “a land of milk and honey”. Did you know that in 2007, archeologists found in Tel Rehov a large intact apiary believed to date from the tenth century BCE, suggesting large-scale honey production in ancient times? This book traces the linguistic origins of names of Jewish dishes, and offers many recipes, as well as cultural and culinary history. If you want to make Sephardic Toasted Noodles, or Mufleta (Moroccan Pancake Breads), or to try out a remedy for sore throat with the wonderful name of Gogl-Mogl, you will find out how to do so in this absorbing Encyclopedia. When you’ve borrowed it and returned it to our Library, you may decide to buy your own copy to keep handy to dip into and share with family members and visitors alike.
