2016-17 GHS & GMS Athletic Report

Ball-Chatham CUSD #5 2016-17 Athletic Report Athletic Mission The Ball-Chatham Unit School District #5 Athletic Department’s mission is to develop programs from top to bottom that give our student-athletes the best possible opportunities to achieve success. One of our top priorities in meeting our goal is to staff programs with coaches who are willing to work together within their individual programs and also work within the framework of the broader vision of the entire athletic program. With strong athletic programs, the student-athlete experience transcends athletics and creates a situation for life lessons to occur and help these young people in their adult lives.

Overview The 2016-17 Glenwood Athletic Department consisted of 50 paid and 18 volunteer high school and 27 paid and 4 volunteer middle school coaching positions, one athletic trainer provided through Springfield Clinic Sports Medicine, one athletic secretary, and one director of athletics. The purpose of athletics is to enhance the opportunity to broaden the educational scope for our students. Here at Glenwood, students are fortunate to have a large variety of activities available to them. Athletic contests take place almost nightly. During the 2016-17 school year, our high school and middle school programs competed in approximately 795 contests (GHS – 520, GMS – 275). Of these contests, roughly half of them were home events. In addition, we hosted one IESA post-season event and many post-season IHSA tournaments including the 2A IESA Cross Country Sectional, 2A Boys Soccer Regional, 4A Girls Volleyball Sectional, 2A Boys Wrestling Regional, 2A Girls Soccer Sectional, 3A Softball Sectional, and the 3A Baseball Sectional.

IHSA Tournament Series This past year, we celebrated seven regional championships, one playoff berth, two sectional championships, and multiple individual state qualifiers (page 3).

Staff We have a district full of dedicated people that make our athletic programs a success. Our coaches are extremely dedicated to their craft and most-importantly, our student-athletes. They lead by example and demonstrate the qualities of first-class citizens on a daily basis. We are fortunate to have a great support staff for our athletic programs as well. Our secretarial, custodial, and facility staff do a tremendous amount of work providing for our athletic programs.

Athletic Boosters (GHS & GMS) We are also fortunate to have an active athletic booster club that works tirelessly to provide resources and opportunities to supplement our sports programs budget and equipment needs. They also managed the concessions for our home sporting events.
