Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Community Members, Waits River Valley School has a clear vision for their school and is embracing a model that is designed to generate high levels of academic achievement in all content areas, for ALL scholars. Our desire is to work as a learning community that celebrates a clear K8 learning con#nuum that supports each learner and their unique learning styles. Our curriculum is con#nually presented as inquirybased in daily instruction. Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of #me to inves#gate and respond to an authen#c, engaging and complex ques#on, problem, or challenge. PBL provides voice and choice in all stages of the activity/learning, allowing the individual scholar to build their communication, effort and perseverance, inquiry, and decision making and problem solving strategies. The Funda#ons Program provides researchbased materials and strategies essen#al to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwri#ng program. Funda#ons makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for lifelong literacy. Scholars in grades K3 receive a systema#c program in cri#cal founda#onal skills. The instruc#on aligns with the state’s rigorous college and career ready standards, including the Common Core State Standards. For the 20162017 school year, the Waits River Valley School along with the schools in the Orange East Supervisory Union im plemented standardsbased report cards for scholars in grades K6. These report cards reflect an evalua#on of skills and concepts, progress based on current level of expecta#ons. The report card standards are based on the Common Core State Standards for ELA, Wri#ng, and Math; NextGenera#on Science Standards; and the VTGLEs and Na#onal Standards for the other content areas. Students are measured on a con#nuum of 14 based on how well they perform against these standards. Work is in progress to developing the same level of report cards for scholars in grades 7 & 8 that will be implemented for the 20182019 school year. Ver#cal teaming was developed and implemented with monthly mee#ngs at OESU with the curriculum director and SU wide content leaders to develop common grade level work and create units and common assessments for the Common Core Standards. An assessment team was created and staff completed professional development on interpre#ng data. With the crea#on of daily common team #me, teachers regularly collaborated to talk about instruc#onal changes based on our assessment data. We worked with Fran Huntoon, a skilled math consultant and instructor for the VT Math Ins#tute, who observes math instruc#on, and provides teachers with feedback, problem solving ideas and progress celebra#on. Funded with CFP money, Fran helps quide our work to evaluate math assessment data for system progress. We are con#nuially looking for ways to engage our scholars during nonschool #me. February and April vaca#on weeks provided K5 camp opportuni#es which were PBL models of instruc#on. Our middle school scholars had the opportunity to a"end a summer humani#es camp, funded through VT Humani#es, which integrated enrichment based English language arts and social studies content. We are strongly commi"ed to our communi#es and con#nually seek addi#onal ways to build rela#onships within the school community and the community at large. We work to be as visible as possible to our community, allowing for genuine rela#onships to form. We con#nue to hold the standard of having an individual voice, to feel respected and valued, and to engage in modeling life long learning. We want the scholars to be thinking of individual goals for the present, the near future, and even aligning standards and values learned to their broader future. We invite families to visit and be a part of our learning #me. We value the community exper#se that can bring enrichment and enlightenment to our programming. Thank you for your con#nual support and desire to see scholars successful. You have an amazing school that is filled to capacity with dedicated and professional staff, highly mo#vated scholars, and truly passionate families that celebrate their children's successes. Sincerely, Carlo"a SimondsPerantoni
