ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2016 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2017
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
In my mind, looking back to July 2016 produces a blur of activity. I think we had a productive year. It may take another year or two to answer. Many things have been given a start. How they turn out is to be determined. I remain optimistic. Changing our name to Avonworth Historical Society has been positively received. Throughout the coming year we will be working on details associated with our new name. Our goals are lofty. We aim for improved web presence and better access to our materials. Access to our photos is a priority. Also, we look for ways to have broader recognition by Avonworth residents of us as a local resource I learned a couple of new stories during the time I was putting this report together. Perhaps they will appear in our Chronicle. They each affirm there is an underlying curiosity about our past and interest in preserving links of present to past. One way to do that is to visit our office on Camp Horne Road to see our collections, or to chat about “back in the day” for a while. We try to have the office open for drop-in visitors Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To verify if we are open a specific day, or if you have questions we can work on before you visit, send a note to
[email protected]. As is obvious from the number of names listed, many people already participate in our work. We appreciate your time as much (maybe more) as your financial support. While you may see references to BAAHA occasionally, our acronym for over 30 years is retired. Welcome to the new Avonworth Historical Society. Dick Herchenroether

the Wilson Farm and Newgate Road story Our August 2017 issue of the Chronicle featured the story of the lands along Newgate Road in Kilbuck Township. It tells the story of a family that crossed the Atlantic to escape the potato famine in Ireland and two local businessmen who wanted to invest in “high class” residential development. Newgate Road became part of these developments.
