911 Memorial Healing Field Information 2002 - It began as a simple way for Paul Swenson of Sandy, Utah and CEO of the Colonial Flag Company to visualize a comprehensive way of the sheer enormity of the loss of human life during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. But has hundreds of volunteers gathered to help, it soon became evident that something much more was emerging. It became a personal gesture of support, a tangible expression of mourning, honor and a very real healing experience. Mr. Swenson saw the potential of this field of flags, this “healing field” as a way to help America heal. That day in 2002, Mr. Swenson committed his resources and energy to forming a Foundation that would assist other communities to experience this amazing healing and the hopeful effects of uniting America. The massive display of flags reminds us of the magnitude of loss while the attached name cards do not allow us to forget that individual losses are personal and real.
2003 - The National Exchange Club, a national service organization, adopted Mr. Swenson’s Healing Field Memorial as an Americanism project for its programs of service.
2004 - Three Exchange Clubs in the Phoenix area formed the Valley of the Sun Exchange Clubs Foundation and presented the first 9/11 Memorial Healing Field in Tempe, Arizona.
2005-2015 - The Exchange Club of Tempe continues this remembrance tradition as the host for residents and visitors of the Valley of the Sun.
