Primary Sources The Wisconsin Standards for Literacy in All Subjects emphasizes critical thinking and analysis of primary and secondary resources for students of social studies. In fact, the use of authentic primary source analysis will help your students access the following standards: Reading/History (RH)1, RH2, RH3, RH4, RH5, RH8, RH9, RH10, Writing/History(WH)1, WH2, WH7, and WH9!

Close reading of the primary source if it is a written text, close observance if it is an artifact or photo. Use of targeted questioning that goes beyond the superficial. Who wrote/made this? What do you know about the author/maker/artist? What bias did the author/maker/artist have? Who was the intended audience? How does any of this change the interpretation of information? Alone, pair, or small group analysis. Large group discussion is not enough!
