Each year we have elections. To do that, we have three people from the Board and general membership put together a slate of proposed officers. To get this slate, the nominating committee must ask other members to run for offices. If they know ahead of time who would be willing to run for a particular (or any) office, AND who wouldn’t or couldn’t accept any position for the following year, their job is made much simpler. Please call Randy Harris for further information (831) 438-5150. Please note that many positions can be filled by members with little to no experience, and mentoring is available to anyone who would like to take on a position but is unsure as to how to do the job. Please fill out this sheet to indicate what offices and or committee you are willing to fill, turn it in at the next general meeting, or mail it to Randy Harris, 107 Dell Way, Scotts Valley CA 95066 If you live out of state, you don’t need to do this.

501(C)3 AND HOW DOES IT APPLY TO US BY CHUCK BOBLENZ

501(c)3 is the section of Internal Revenue Code covering tax exempt organizations. These organizations are organized and operate exclusively for exempt purposes as detailed in this regulation by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The key points of this Code provide guidance on how it must operate and its net earnings must not be used to the benefit of a private shareholder or individual. A private shareholder or individual is a person having a personal and private interest in the activities of the organization. In our case, we were incorporated in the early 1950’s and the founding fathers chose our emphasis to be in the education category. This area of education specializes in providing information and demonstrations of skills associated with the Earth Sciences and other similar topics.

Form 990-EZ, this form is required if the Gross Receipts are less than $200,000 and the organization has Assets less than $500,000; the normal SCVGMS yearly Gross Income is greater than $50,000 and requires that this form to be filed. Form 990, this form is required if the Gross Receipts are greater than $200,000 and the organization has Assets greater than $500,000. One of these forms, with its supporting schedules, must be filed each year for the organization. The N form is a post-card stating that the organization complies with the requirements. The other two require a Schedule A form which requires much more information.

The benefit of the 501(c)3 rating is our ability to receive contributions to our organization of material and/or money and the donor being able to deduct his/ her contribution on their income tax for that year. The Society’s Financial Report for the year is important in a number of ways. Our being a 501(c)3 non-profit organization requires that we file forms with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) which is IRS Form 990. There are three different forms for doing this: Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society San Jose, CA

Form 990-N, this form is filled out if the organizations Gross Receipts are less than $50,000 for the year;

This additional form requires a listing of all Board Members, their title, and hours worked to support the organization, compensation, health benefit program cost, and other compensation. All 501(c)3 organizations must complete a Form 990-EZ Schedule A. This schedule requires the financial data from the book closing Financial Report; specifically, data from the Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet portions. The current year data and the same data from the prior continues on page 8
